Chapter 6 by SG SG

What do they do?

Take the afternoon off.

A thought occurred to me. "I'm giving us the afternoon off."

Sarah raised her eyebrows. "You can do that?"

"I think I can." I said with a smile. I took out my phone and dashed off an email to my boss and another to Sarah's boss explaining that we need the afternoon. As expected, both responded with a deferential affirmation. I told Sarah as much. "So what do you want to do with our day off?"

She grinned eagerly. "Want to come chill at my place?" she asked. I looked at our untouched meals and she added, "We'll get these to go."

I nodded and she got up to get to-go boxes. We boxed up our food and headed for the door. The whole time Sarah was bursting with excitement. She tried not to show it, but she was absolutely giddy. It was kind of cute seeing her like this.

As we walked to the car, a homeless man approached us. He looked Sarah over, sizing her up to determine whether she might be friendly. As an experiment, I tried to hand him my leftovers.

He looked at them with disgust, then at me. "What do you want me to do with this?"

"Eat it?" I asked innocently. A look of surprise crossed his face, then one of compassion. I realized he probably thought I was mentally ill and trying to give him trash. "Um, no thank you. I have to go." He hurried away, eager to end the interaction.

When I turned back, Sarah was staring at me with incredulity. "What was that? Why wouldn't he take your food?" she asked with genuine worry. "Do you think he's ok?"

I realized that as time went on, Sarah was going to notice more and more oddities in my interactions. Between the deli staff, my boss, and now the homeless man, she was probably already suspicious. I debated with myself. Should I share my theory with her?

Well?
