Krvavy just continues to smile, listening on as Beryl enthusiastically gives her tour.
Throwing Spears & Talking Numbers
âArm up a little more, my dearest love. There, good! Now throw!â
Krvavyâs right arm snaps forward, along with her body, sending the homemade javelin flying through the cool air of the grotto.
âYa sure do learn quickly.â Beryl idly states, closely watching the small spear as it skewers into a bush slightly off to the side, its branch-like shaft wobbling as the tip bites into the soft ground. âOnce yaâve got yer aim down, Ah reckon thaâ ya can try yer âand at throwinâ while movinâ. Not right now, oâ course, but soon enough.â
Even without the literal skill for it, this tanned tomboy of a Wood Elf knows a thing or two about throwing javelins. Each bit of advice that she has given Krvavy, from small adjustments to the Draklingâs posture or grip to when it is best to actually release the javelin, has been useful and incredibly helpful. But more than just knowing these things... Beryl is actually surprisingly good at doing all of that herself as well. Guess that is what happens when someone has as much dexterity as she does. That said, the Elf is still better with her bow. Way better.
âDo ya âave a skill fer this yet? Or âas yer thrown weapon proficiency at least levelled up?â
âNo to both.â Krvavy replies after a quick check of her stat sheet.
âShame.â Beryl clicks her tongue in disappointment. âWell, Ah think it is time fer a break then.â
Krvavy questioningly raises an eyebrow. âReally? Iâm not even starting to get tired yet. I can keep going.â
âAye, ya can. But weâve been at this fer over an hour already, so it doesnât âurt ta give ya a bit oâ a breather.â The Elf replies, before a twinkle enters her eyes. âAfter all, Ah donât want ta tire ya out just yet~! At least not until we get ta practice witâ yer other spear~!â
The barbarian just lightly shakes her head, trying to ignore the tanned tomboyâs teasing taunt.
âThough, now thaâ weâve got some time, âow about ya ask another oâ those questions thaâ ya âave?â Beryl suggests as she moves to sit on a nearby rock. âThisâll probably be yer last chance ta do so today. Unless ya want ta ask them when weâre eatinâ dinner...?â
âNo, now is good.â Krvavy replies, settling down on the ground near her Elf. After a few moments of thinking about what to ask, she opens her mouth and begins. âThis is kind of about your worries earlier, I just didnât want to interrupt you by bringing it up then. So... I donât really have any context for levels and attributes. The numbers, I mean. What is âgoodâ? What is ânormalâ? That kind of thing.â
âHmm...â The tanned Wood Elf thinks for a moment. âWell, the answer ta thaâ is quite complicated... Especially fer attributes, as thaâ differs rather âeavily per race... So Ah guess Ahâll start witâ the levels.â
A coy smile plays at Berylâs lips as she slowly stretches her arms straight above her head, very intentionally putting her petite breasts and toned belly on display, before continuing on as if she didnât just tease Krvavy for no reason. âHmm... âow ta begin... Ah suppose thaâ Ah can try categorizinâ different ranges...? Yeah, thaâll work. So, letâs say thaâ there are fivâ no six ranges.â
Krvavy leans to the side, resting her chin on her fist. She slightly regrets asking a question that she actually wants an answer to, because now sheâll have to do her best to not get distracted by this cheeky Elf...
âThe first rangeâd be anyone beneath level ten. Generally speakinâ, beinâ less than level ten is pretty bad. At least fer an adult, thaâ is. People level up from learninâ and doinâ things, so ya can see âow reachinâ adulthood but still being such a low level is a bit oâ a warninâ sign.â The tanned Elf explains, pausing for a moment and tilting her head in thought. âYa know, thaâ is probably why yer little princess âas such a complex about âerself. Even witâ âer noble upbringinâ and the education she wouldâa âad she was only, whaâ, level six when ya found âer? Not ta be rude, but thaâ is pretty pathetic.â
âAs fer ya...â Beryl locks eyes with the Drakling, letting her lips twitch downwards just a little. âWell, Ah âave no idea âow yaâre such a low level. Especially witâ yer affinities beinâ whaâ they are. Ah can only assume it has somethinâ ta do witâ yer... unique situation?â She leaves that questioning hanging in the air, waiting for Krvavy to confirm it or not.
The barbarian simply nods her head, as that is... close enough. It isnât like she can give a proper explanation. Not without sounding crazy, at least. Though Beryl probably would believe her either way...
âSo, movinâ on... The second group would be those between level ten and twenty. If beinâ in the first group is bad, then beinâ in this one is alright. It isnât anythinâ special, really. Kind oâ just the normal level fer normal people. Fer the most part. Age plays a factor too, oâ course. An older person beinâ in the lower end wouldâa spent most oâ their life in the first group and a younger person beinâ in the higher end will likely end up in the next group, so theyâre not the most comparable...â
Beryl briefly pauses, cocking her head as she seems to consider something. âYer puppy, Khalia, was level seventeen when ya first ran inta âer, right? Ah wonder âow old she actually is... She is definitely an adult, though a younger one at that. So she probably âad a fair bit oâ potential. But then again, Ah believe Orcs only live fer around âalf a century, so sheâd be more than a third oâ the way through her life by now...â
âIf age plays a bit part in these âgroupsâ,â Krvavy interjects, âdoes that mean theyâre different for each race? Or is it more of a âproportion through lifeâ kind of thing?â
âBoth.â The Elf quickly responds. âAh did say it was complicated, aye? Though, remember, Ahâm makinâ up these groups as Ah go along, basinâ them on whaâ Ah know and my own experiences. Theyâre not somethinâ well-defined and widely agreed upon. Just the observations oâ an Elf maiden who âas travelled far and wide.â
The tomboyish Elf takes a deep breath, brow furrowing as she tries to better order her thoughts.
âSo... while things are different fer different races, there is still a degree oâ similarity between them. Fer instance, Ah can confidently say thaâ this second group is where the average person ends up, regardless oâ race. It is just thaâ a lot oâ factors go inta it. Humans, in my experience, tend ta be on the lower end. But thaâ is mostly because so many oâ them are little more than peasants toiling away and barely makinâ a livinâ. Elves tend ta take a bit longer ta mature, weâve got twenty ta thirty years until beinâ considered an adult, but the ones who are content witâ their lives still tend ta be on the mid ta âigh end. Orcs, on the other âand, tend ta âave shorter, more rugged, lives witâ a lot oâ fightinâ so... what Ahâm sayinâ is ya donât see weaker Orcs âcause they tend ta die.â
Krvavy finds herself nodding to pretty much every word her Elf has to say. It all makes sense so far.
âThaâ âelp? Good.â Beryl rolls her shoulders and takes another deep breath. âOkay, the next group would be those in their twenties and thirties, so roughly from level twenty ta forty. Ah suppose thaâ this is where it gets a bit mucky, as thaâ is a pretty big range oâ levels. But the individual levels arenât as significant as the previous groups, and thaâll only get worse from here on out...â
Beryl stifles a groan, clearly not finding it particularly easy to explain all of this, even if she has done a fairly good job so far.
âAnyway... the people in this third group would be, well, those witâ some promise and potential. Beinâ âere is respectable, but nothinâ ta really write âome about. This groupâll get lots oâ opportunities in life, they just wonât stand out all thaâ much. Fer an example, think oâ some well-trained soldiers or professional mercenaries. Theyâre good, especially when compared ta normal people, but not outrageously so.â
Beryl pauses, looking like she has something else to say, but instead she simply shakes her head and moves on.
âAs fer the fourth group, thaâd be those from the forties ta low sixties, so probably up ta level sixty-five or so? Ah feel like thisâs the last group witâ a reasonable number oâ people in it, as the next two could probably just be seen as extraordinary outliers. Thaâ said, if ya loosed an arrow inta a crowd ya probably wouldnât âit anyone from this range.â The Elf shrugs a bit dismissively. âPeople âere tend ta be somethinâ like the most elite soldiers or those from really good and renowned bloodlines who actually put some effort inta improvinâ themselves. There isnât really much fer me ta say, just thaâ theyâre strong.â
âAnd Ah have even less ta say about the fifth group, which would go up ta level ninty-nine. Theyâd generally be seen as the best oâ the best, outside oâ legends or rare exceptions. An example would be... Hmm...â Beryl thinks for a moment. âA royal guard fer someone who is incredibly, extremely, important? A single one, maybe? Yaâd be lucky ta get a âandful oâ people this strong in one place, as they tend ta go off and do their own thing.â
The tanned tomboyâs shoulders slump slightly as she approaches the finish line, perhaps having rushed a bit to get here.
âAlright, so thaâ leaves the sixth and final group, which Ah would say is anyone who âas a level in the hundreds. Ah suppose thaâ beyond figures from legends, this groupâd mostly be the mages whoâve extended their lives through magic so they can continue ta obsess over their research. Not particularly common, mind ya, but thereâre more people like thaâ then yaâd think...â The Wood Elf trails off, before intensely staring into Krvavyâs eyes. âYa âad best live long enough ta make it inta this last group.â
Krvavy raises her hands in mock surrender. âIâll try, but we have already been over this.â
âAh know, Ah know...â The tomboy sighs and shakes her head. âGuess itâs time fer me ta talk about the attributes. Theyâre even more complicated witâ a lot more factors in play...â A faint grimace dances across her face. âSo... Just âow do Ah put this...? Havinâ a base oâ ten is alright fer an attribute thaâ ya donât need. Especially if ten is the lowest one ya âave, like in yer case...â
Silence hangs in the air as the Elf trails off. A few long seconds pass on by, but just as Krvavy is considering speaking up, Beryl softly shakes her head and continues.
âHow about an example? Like...â the tanned Elf snaps her fingers together a few times, âyer girl, Thea. If all oâ âer Physical attributes were at least ten, then thaâ would be great. After all, sheâs a noble who never really needs ta lift a finger oâ âer own. But she does need âer Social attributes ta do noble socialite things, so if those were only ten, well, thaâd be pretty bad. Ya get whaâ Ahâm trying ta say?â
âYeah,â Krvavy quickly nods, âbut I assume that isnât exactly the case when you get to higher levels?â
âAye. Itâs a bit arbitrary, ta be honest, but at a certain point âaving just ten in an attribute could be a bit oâ a vulnerability. Fer example, someone puttinâ everythinâ inta their Physical attributes would be quite the force ta be reckoned with, but they might gloss over somethinâ important if their Insight and Perception arenât âigh enough, or they might be too easily tricked if they donât âave enough Rationality and Guile, or they could be manipulated and controlled by emotional magic if their Willpower and Composure are too low, or people might think theyâre nothinâ but a slobberinâ brute if they donât âave more Charisma and Allure...â
âBut,â the Elf emphasizes, holding up a single finger. âThaâ doesnât mean ya âave ta keep all yer attributes equal. Beinâ well-rounded is good, but it also âas its drawbacks: if ya were in a fight witâ someone more specialized then the odds wouldnât be in yer favour. Assuminâ the fight leans inta their specialization...â
Krvavy nods again, listening to each word her Elf has to say.
This isnât the most exciting topic, but it is still interesting enough to keep her attention on Berylâs words over that Elfâs beautiful body. For the most part. She canât exactly keep her eyes off this tanned tomboyâs tantalizingly toned tummy, watching how it tenses and trembles as Beryl talks...
And that is saying nothing of how this Elfâs toned thighs squish so nicely into that rock she is sitting on, or how the pert and perky handfuls that rest atop her chest rise and fall with each breath she takes, or even the thoughtful expression filling her graceful face...
The barbarian closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.
âHmm... Ah suppose thaâ Ah can use myself as an example fer this.â Beryl muses, oblivious to how close the Drakling was to being truly distracted. âSee, there are some attributes thaâ Ah âavenât bothered ta increase since Ah was a young child. Rationality, fer instance, isnât all thaâ useful ta me as Ah donât rely on magic, so Ah donât need the greater amount oâ mana, and Ahâm already smart enough. Ahâm no scholar, Ah donât need ta work my way through word or number problems. My Social attributes are also all pretty low, as Ah never really liked dealinâ witâ people. Composure and Guile âave some use in helpinâ me keep my nerves and in pickinâ things up a little quicker, but Ah donât need them ta be very âigh. And then thereâs Charisma and Allure, which are... a little more complicated. Fer my case, at least.â
Now far more composed, the barbarian opens her eyes once more... only to quickly raise a brow as she waits for her Elf to continue.
âThose two attributes are the only ones thaâ Ah have less than ten points in. Not only were they the most useless in my life, at least until Ah met ya,â the tomboyish Wood Elf adds with a gentle smile, âbut Ah feel like they are the most subjective. Both attributes are purely social, and as Ah said Ah never liked dealinâ witâ people. Charisma is generally seen as the force oâ ones character and âow well ya can communicate, which means a different thing ta everyone. Ya, fer instance, can understand the intent behind my words pretty well, so why would Ah need any more? And then fer Allure, well, ya find me attractive, aye?â
âOf course.â Krvavy replies without a moments hesitation. âI think youâre ridiculously hot, and have since I first saw you covered in soot and fully clothed.â
Berylâs face flushes at that bold statement. âW-well...â The Elf embarrassingly brushes some hair behind her long pointed ear and fails to hold back a smile as she tries to move past that sudden and intense compliment. âYa see... Allure isnât exactly whaâ makes someone âattractiveâ ta others, though it does âelp. It lies more in the mannerisms and small details, but it doesnât change other peoplesâ attractions. Fer example, if Ah âad âundreds oâ points in Allure, Ah still wouldnât be able ta seduce a women who is only inta men. Oh, sheâd definitely acknowledge thaâ Ahâd be attractive, and thaâ might change âow she thinks about me, but Ah wouldnât âave any better luck gettinâ inta her bed than Ah would now.â
âThaâ said, Ah am tempted ta increase my Allure fer ya. Ya seeâ No, no, let me explain.â Beryl wags her finger at Krvavy, not letting the barbarian interrupt her. âYa see, Ah am a bit clumsy in my attempts ta arouse ya. Not literally, as my Dexterity is too âigh fer thaâ, but in a metaphorical sense. Just look at yer girl, Thea. She has âas twenty points oâ Allure, correct? Thaâ is more than double mine, and Ah see the effect it has on ya, even if ya donât. Ah can say, fer a fact, thaâ if she âad my Charisma and Allure ya wouldâa made her inta yer rapebait instead oâ whaâever she is ta ya now. But ya didnât, because there is somethinâ about thaâ girl ya just find... alluring.â
Krvavy would like to think that her Elf is wrong about that, as it makes the barbarian feel rather shallow, but a part of her knows that Beryl is right. She would still find Thea attractive, but if she found the girlâs personality to be repulsive and the way she carries herself to be too arrogant or annoying, then Krvavy wouldnât feel particularly bad about treating her so poorly... Which probably says a lot about the kind of person that Krvavy really is...
âOh, donât feel guilty about it, my dearest love!â Beryl almost begs, snapping Krvavy out of her thoughts. âAh think about âer in a much worse way! Or at least Ah did until she started acting a little bit better behaved...â The tomboyish Elf shakes her head. âAnyway... My point is thaâ those attributes are so subjective: ya enjoy âow Thea acts, while I do not. So if ya find me attractive as Ah am, then just imagine âow irresistible Ahâd be ta ya if Ah raised up my Allure!â
Considering how difficult it is for Krvavy to stop herself from bending Beryl over and taking the lithe Elf right now, that is a bit of a scary thought... She wouldnât be able to keep her hands off of her Elf, and sheâd never get anything done... âI wouldnât want you to waste your points on that...â
Beryl smirks, almost predatorily, as she sees the flimsiness of that excuse. She opens her mouth to say something, but pauses as her eyes go wide. âOh. OH! Ahâm sorry! Ah got a bit carried away! Ah still âave ta answer yer question! Okay, okay, so... Where was Ah...?â
Taking a deep breath, the tanned tomboy collects herself. âAh, yes. Ah said thaâ some oâ my attributes are low because theyâre useless ta me. Well, my key attributes are Dexterity and Perception, as Ahâm a âunter, a Ranger, so Ah need ta be agile and notice my prey. It also âelps thaâ Ahâm a Wood Elf and those two naturally increase as Ah level up, but thaâ is a whole other thing. Anyway, the rest oâ my attributes are useful ta me, in some way, but not ones thaâ Ah rely on. As such, Ah brought them up ta at least twenty-five so thaâ Ah could get the milestone traits.â
âAnd thaâ is what Ah recommend thaâ ya do!â Beryl forcibly states, pointing at Krvavy. âThose traits are very good and Ah would love ta âave one fer each attribute. But thaâ is quite the investment. Fer someone like me, thaâ is. Not fer ya though, as yer high affinities mean thaâ yaâll just keep levelling up ferever. So Ah really think ya should make sure ta âave at least twenty-five in each attribute. Thaâ said, Ahâm not sure if ya should do thaâ right now. Yer current attributes are pretty good, so ya should focus on increasinâ the ones thaâll benefit ya the most first.â
âOkay.â Krvavy easily agrees. She wanted to get all of the attribute traits anyway, but Beryl does have a point... If Krvavy wants to get revenge on the Duke and his damn wizard then she needs to get stronger, and wasting points on some of her less useful stats just to get a small bonus from a trait isnât exactly the smartest thing to do... She should still get Willpower and Insight up, as her earthand blood magic depends on those, but itâd probably be wise to turn her focus back to Might and Toughness after that... Though those two do increase on their own each time she levels up...
âSorry ta interrupt yer thinkinâ.â Beryl apologetically speaks up. âBut Ah just have one last thing ta add, before weâll âave ta get back ta traininâ. Ahâve talked a lot more than Ah intended ta, and this âas drawn out a bit... Sorry. Ha...heh...â The Elf nervously laughs to herself.
âAhem. Anyway... My last point is in what a âgoodâ amount oâ an attribute ta âave differs dependinâ on yer race. Simply put, whatever increases naturally on its own each time ya level up is expected ta be âigher than the others. This is a pretty obvious point, but people tend ta overlook it.â Beryl shrugs her shoulders. âFer example, fer myself thoseâd be Dexterity and Perception, as Ah said before. So at my level if Ah only had, say, only twenty-five oâ each... Well, Ah would be a laughingstock and a failure oâ an Elf. Though thaâ isnât exactly possible, as Ah get two oâ each whenever Ah level up, so Ahâd have a bare minimum oâ... whaâ... Uh... fifty-four right now...? Not includinâ the base amount Ah wouldâa gotten growinâ up...â
The Elf blinks, staring blankly into space. âActually, come ta think oâ it, Ah âave a pretty low amount oâ Dexterity and Perception fer a Ranger... Have Ah ever even put any points inta them...?â She mutters out with a sigh, looking down at the ground. A frown slowly spreads across her face. âGuess Ah really âave wasted most oâ my life so far... Ah never really knew whaâ Ah wanted ta do witâ myself...â
Before Krvavy can reassure the Elf, Beryl abruptly claps her hands together and moves on. âWell, thaâ is all Ah âave ta say. Ah âope thaâ answered yer question?â
âYes, that was... more than enough. Thank you.â Krvavy replies. Even though most of Berylâs answers pretty much just boiled down to it depends, they still helped to give her a bit of perspective. Kind of sad that she is pretty under-levelled, though that isnât much of a surprise. But then again, that extra stat point she gets each level probably balances that out...
âGood, Ahâm glad ta âelp, my dearest love. Now, we really need ta get back ta throwinâ yer sharp sticks around! So get to it! Up, up!â Beryl playfully barks out her orders.
While Krvavy doesnât like being bossed around one bit, there is something endearing about her Elf unwittingly acting like a drill sergeant. It is kind of cute, to be honest. Especially with how Beryl is smiling and clearly enjoying herself.
âDonât just sit there! Get movinâ! And donât ya forget the ones ya threw! Go get them first!â
