Chapter 86 by yamidamian

How goes the looting?

Not well-what it triggers is of far more interest.

To be frank, I had almost overlooked the chest-on account of its small size. perhaps too much time spent playing zelda had given my a bit of an unrealistic expectation about how big these normally are. This thing wouldn't have qualified as a foot locker-maybe a storage bin at best. Then again, it was literally the first thing here-I'm sure its just has a size and (utter lack of) ornateness to suit its contents. I begin to move towards it when i feel a tug at my leg. Not remotely enough for the actual **** to stop me, but the mere sensation grabs my attention. The cursed goblin gives a nod of her head towards Arete. Ah, right. Trap checking. That's a thing one normally does before opening chests in dungeons.

So, I let him go on ahead as he scans over the box, while my own eye turns to the room. It looks like it has an obvious door on each of its four walls-along with a few panels that might be some kind slightly less obvious door. Possible backtracking routes for later? All the doors save the one we'd come through seemed to be barred by some kind of iron coming from from the ceiling and embedding into the floor.

I don't get much time to ponder before the rogue announces an all clear-and then opens the thing, with a small thunk as it opens. Inside are a couple coarse pouches that give a slight metallic jangle when they were gingerly picked up. Opening one showed it to have a fistful of coins, and the other some jewelry. Having no clue of their value, I took the mildly irritated looks on the more experienced delvers faces to indicate it was only barely worth picking up. They pocketed the joins and tossed the baubles to us. For my part, I then handed them off to the dragon-she seemed the most interested of us in them, and it's not like any of us have an actual use for the baubles.

I was about to pipe up to ask how the heck it we continue when it looks like all forward paths were blocked when I heard a slight click, and then a grinding as the panels begin to move, revealing I was horribly wrong about their use. Those weren't passages. They were monster closets. And somewhat disappointingly, not even somewhat halfway good looking ones like most of present company. Two groups walk out and begin slowly lumbering towards us. Each made of two different construct monsters-one a hulking heap of indifferentiated metal in an incredibly vaguely humanoid shape, and the other a more on-theme being like a clockwork automaton in a shape closer to a human, a sword and shield integrated into its limbs' construction.

Sadly, for all I might have been intrigued on seeing how the latter might have worked under the hood, they aren't exactly here for anything peaceable-instead, jumping right into combat. I have to take a few step back to dodge the slow movements of the iron golem-sure enough without needing to put it to the test that those fists have a lot of weight behind them-as our group begins to scramble into positions to fight these.

Anything interesting happen in the fight?
