Chapter 9 by takacube takacube

What's next?

Getting squared away

You spent the next few days after arriving from the hospital taking your time to get adjusted to the new surroundings and what you were looking at in terms of a new life to live. There wasn't too much difference in terms of what your daily life would look like, you were still a high school senior and you were still going to school. Your dad was still working and would drive to school and back.

That's pretty much where the similarities ended.

For dad, as he mused the second night that you two were settling in over dinner, Gregory worked as an interior architect and had his own small but profitable firm downtown. He had always wanted to do design work but with three kids, had decided instead to taking up simple consulting jobs and pushed that passion aside. There was a bit of a smile on his face as he said he looked forward to actually doing the work this time around, especially since it was a small firm that would give him time to get used to the job and tasks at running a business (something he too wanted to do but couldn't.)

For you, it turned out, Kayleigh was something of a popular girl at the school she went to. Despite being a public school like your old one, this was considered to be a top-tier school that prided itself on accomplishments of its students and to getting them into good colleges after graduation. You could tell by the state of the books on your desk in the bedroom that they were updated versions, better than the 2 editions behind books that you left in your old school. Each student had a school-issued laptop and tablet to assist with STEM-courses and homework was broken down into team groups for collaborative learning. Kayleigh's grades weren't anything to sneer at, either, not at the top of her class but in the top 5% was definitely something else. She was also active in a group of friends with various activities in student government and swimming, that was a bit of a surprise.

More of a surprise, for the two of you, was the relationship aspect of your new lives.

It had been explained that your minds were now in the bodies you had become but there would be only a portion of your old brain implanted, a sizeable portion was from the original person. In effect, where your original self ended and the new self began was a bit of a blur and even the doctors could not fully explain it. So, when you were able to put on makeup with no problem, or when your dad was able to figure out architectural design software, all of that seemed to be residual memory.

You and mom shared a lot of closeness growing up, you had confided in her (and not your dad, unbeknownst) about your first wet dream and she worked with you on your male-related sexual issues growing up. It was difficult to imagine why you would have done that except you just felt a closeness and ability to talk with her about these things that you didn't with your dad. IT wasn't like she would have any frame of reference but she was very understanding and took your confidence to heart, not abusing it in any way, and mostly not being judgmental, which helped you a lot. In turn, she shared herself with you, feelings and thoughts about the three of you growing up and being able to leave her behind with your dad.

It was still strange to sit there, though, with the issue about sex and your new bodies coming up that caused you to look at him that evening and he at you. "So, how do we talk about...?"
