Chapter 7 by SG SG

How indeed?

Remove her skepticism.

In the silence, Jamie concentrated. He pored over his wife's traits until he found what he was looking for. He grabbed her skepticism by edges and pulled as hard as he could, detaching the whole thing at once.

Ashley suddenly felt a little strange. It was like there was suddenly a gap in her mind. She thought about Jamie's story - it sounded outlandish, sure, but why would he lie?

"Jamie, I'm sorry I didn't trust you. That story sounds crazy to me but if you say it happened I believe you." She paused. "But you should be careful with this, whatever it is. I like the way you're behaving now, but if you start messing with people and things like this it could have all sorts of unforeseen consequences." A moment passed. Wait, why did she believe him? "Jamie, did you do something to me?"

He smiled sheepishly. "I took your skepticism. It seemed to like the quickest way to get you to believe me. I know, I know - I should think before I experiment. To be honest, I didn't really expect it to do anything."

Ashley couldn't believe it. Her husband had just stolen her skepticism! She didn't even know what that meant, but she was pretty sure it wasn't good. "Jamie! I just told you to be careful! You have no idea what this could be doing to me. Can you even put it back? What if it's gone forever?"

"Relax, honey. It's probably just your skepticism about this weird thing I can do."

He was right, she realized. Taking an entire chunk of her psyche in a moment was pretty implausible. "Ok, but still, it's not safe. Please tell me before you do something like that again."

Crisis averted. He was surprised at how easy it was to talk her down. "Ok, hon. But can I take some of your anxiety about this? You seem really wound up."

She considered it. "I don't know. I don't want to lose my self-preservation. That seems like a bad idea."

He tried again. "Come on, Ash. It's our anniversary! I can put it back afterwards."

He made a good point. There was no harm in taking a little break from worrying about this weird new situation. That way they could have a nice dinner, and she could save her freakout for later. "Yeah, you're right. Go ahead."

Jamie felt around in his wife's traits. He spotted a little thread of worry that seemed to be tied to their conversation. He couldn't help but follow it to the huge, pulsing thing it was connected to - all of her anxiety. He hesitated, not sure that he could extricate just the anxiety she wanted removed.

What does he do?
