"That's wonderful, thank you." Sandy collected the papers from the couple. "If you'll just come with me."

"So what are we doing? Washing dishes?" Jack seemed eager to make up for his apparent embarrassment. He stumbled as he stood but Sandy was ready.

"Something like that. We actually needed a couple to appear in a promotional video and you two are just perfect. We'll just have you listen to a quick recording to get you ready while we get you ready to appear on camera."

"Oh that'll be easy!" Eliza looked relieved not to have been pressed into any manual labor. Mac appeared out of nowhere as Eliza nearly fell out of the booth.

Sandy and Mac gently guided the couple though a back door. The truckers that made up the rest of the diner's clientele smiled knowingly as they walked past.

Eliza's head was swimming as she took in the back room. There was another door at the other end of the small dressing room. There were two stations with light-ringed mirrors and various makeup brushes and palettes laid out. Each had an old school CD player with headphones. As she was guided to one of the stations, some part of her wondered why there would be a set up like this in a diner. But she shoed such practical concerns from her mind; thinking about that was too hard. Thinking about anything was too hard.

She saw Sandy's smiling face behind her in the mirror as the other woman placed the ear buds in her ears and pressed play.
