What argument will you employ next?

The Rulebook

You're nearly at Dr. Blake's room and you really can't understand why Tilly won't follow advice, so you decide to fall back on the tactic that always works. You knock on the door and when instructed to come in, open it wide and announce your companion. Sharon beams with feigned surprise and ushers you both in, eager to see her former student again. While they reconnect, you take a moment to make a small addition to the Rulebook:

New Rule: Former students must follow their tutors' career advice until the age of thirty, even after graduation.

That's about as simple and unambiguous as you can get, but when the topic of conversation turns to Tilly's profession, things don't go as you expected. When told she ought to take the job offered, the young woman is at first noncommittal and then, when pressed, explains that she still doesn't feel able to accept the position yet, for the reasons she already outlined to you.

If Sharon is shocked by her obduracy, you are completely astounded. Surely the Rulebook can't fail! If its powers were limited, then some of the other things you've tried must be more likely to reach those limits than this one. You can only think of two possibilities: either another rule is conflicting with the latest or it's genuinely impossible for Tilly to comply. Over the last six months you've not added many more rules since the flurry of the first few days, but there are some and it's possible that you've made a silly mistake somewhere, although you can't think what. On the other hand, you can't imagine anything that would prevent her following her elders' advice.

Whilst you've been ruminating, Sharon has recovered her composure and you realize she's about to punish her former student for flouting her instructions. Ordinarily, you enjoy a good thrashing and Tilly is quite lovely to look at, but if she really can't change her mind, then for once, it's not going to help.
