The revelation of your relationship becomes a minor scandal in the town, where news travels fast and there is no shortage of gossipy housewives in supply. Not simply because of the difference in your ages - it is perhaps too obvious that Gemma was most likely the cause of your separation from your wife. No one says anything directly to your face of course, but you see the looks you get from disapproving secretaries at work and the people you know around town. Gemma's father doesn't take it well. He disowns her, and your friendship with him becomes all but over. It soon becomes clear that building a future together in this town will be near impossible without some semblance of judgment leveled at you for the rest of your lives. Then again, there is nothing apart from your job that is particularly holding you to this place.

So it is that you propose to Gemma that the two of you travel the world by boat. After all, you've got significant funds from the sale of your properties, and sufficient income from your investments over the last few decades to sustain your day-to-day needs. You make arrangements to purchase a 40-foot yacht, large enough to live in luxurious comfort but small enough to be handled by a crew of just the two of you. By the time the summer comes around you take delivery of your new home, anchored at the marina near your former beach house where you both spent that amazing fortnight together almost one year ago. The two of you take your first steps onto the deck as the sun shines down on you, and you feel like nothing can go wrong from this moment on.

"Aren't you supposed to christen a new boat?" Gemma asks.
