Chapter 13
by Veiled
What do you do?
Confront her
You’d had enough. You were patient with Katie because you loved her. When it had become clear that Katie was sleeping with Brian, you’d turned a blind eye and hoped that eventually she’d come to her senses or the affair would run out of passion before long. But things seemed like they were just getting worse and worse, not better. And something about seeing her without her wedding ring set you off. In your mind, that meant she was trying to distance herself from your marriage. Cheating was bad enough, but losing your wife wasn’t something you could bear.
“Where were you? Really?” You asked, meeting her gaze. She shook her head. “Baby, I told you, I spent the night at Sarah’s. The time just got-“ she started to say, but you held up a hand to cut her off. “Do you think I’m stupid Katie?” You asked, and her eyes widened. “You must think I’m really fucking stupid.” You said, voice breaking and your eyes starting to water. “I know.” You said, staring at her. “I know about you… and Brian.” You said, although it was hard to speak and your voice was quivering. Katie’s hands flew up to her mouth and her knees suddenly seemed weak. “Dylan…” she said, speechless for a moment. “I can’t believe you would do this to me…” you told her, and Katie started shaking. Her eyes teared up and she fell to her knees in front of you. Her lips trembling, she reached out and took your hand. “I am so sorry” she said, a tear rolling down her face. You pulled your hand away and looked down at her with disgust, finally letting her see the feelings you’d been hiding for so long. Her eyes widened in shock as if you’d struck her. “I can’t keep living like this.” You told her, shaking your head and standing up. She looked up at you with an expression of total grief and heartbreak. “I’m moving.” You told her, and she looked confused as more tears ran down her face. “I’m getting away from Brian, and away from here. You need to decide if you’re coming with me, or…” but you couldn’t bring yourself to say the other alternative. “Your choice.” You managed to say, your voice cracking as you grabbed your car keys and stormed out of the house. “Dylan! Wait- Dylan, please! We need to talk about this!” She cried out after you as you drove off with no destination in mind. Just wanting to get away to cry out of sight.
Katie was left on the floor of your living room and she looked around the house as if seeing it for the first time. The house that you and her had made into a home. Now, it seemed that life was slipping away from her. She’d had fun with Brian. She was carrying his baby. He was very bold. Very exciting. Very confident. But he’d never even told her that he loved her. And now, she’d driven away the person who’d been her home for so many years now. The person she’d promised to share her life with, and who had committed to the same. She weeped.
