A Futile Chase !

Debbi jumped down off of the car bonnet and began to chase down the road after Tyson. "Come back here" she called after the dog, as if the animal would understand and take any notice. She had run maybe twenty or thirty yards before she recognized the futility of her actions and also that she was about to emerge naked onto the ring road ! She trudged back to Carol and the waiting crowd, alternating between instinctive attempts to cover and abandoning any such attempts, realizing they'd all seen everything anyway and so just letting it all hang out.

"What do we do now ?" she asked her colleague. "We could phone someone ?" suggested Carol. "Who ? And on what ? Our phones are in the car" countered Debbi. She pulled furiously at the car's door handle, setting off the alarm. "Don't be so bloody stupid, do you think it's going to miraculously open ?" Carol admonished her. "Well who got us into this mess ?" "You insisted that we come" they bickered.

"Better start walking" called someone from the crowd who continued to relish the spectacle in front of them. "Piss off" responded Debbi but all that provoked was more laughter and renewed pointing of cameras in their direction. "I'm thinking that you should come inside for a minute" said an authoritative voice. The crowd respectfully made way for Mrs. Sanders. "With you ? You must be joking" answered Debbi incredulously. "Ok, stay out here then if you've got a better idea." Mrs. Sanders turned back towards her house.

"No, Wait" said Carol. "What ?" hissed Debbi. "You're not thinking of going in there after what she did ?" "It'll maybe give us a chance to think. And like she said, have you got any better idea ?" Carol turned to the departing woman. "Wait, we're coming" she called, heading back across the road. Debbi hesitated but sensing the crowd moving in, she reluctantly hurried after her friend.
