A moment of peace

The rest of the afternoon is blissfully dull. To stave off the mounting boredom, you skitter up a tree every so often to verify your location and check your progress. Noting the distance of the nearing coastline, you are able to make an educated guess at when you will be within sight of the sea-side village. Judging by your progress that day, you assume the forest will begin to thin around noon tomorrow.

"Only if I can keep this pace." You remind yourself. "Haste makes waste, after all"

As you think on the simple statement, a morbid grin creases your face as you realize how true the proverb is in your current situation. You shake the dreary thought from your mind as you begin your jog once more, promising yourself that you will not sacrifice your alertness for promptness.

Another hour crept by as you lightly padded your way along the forest floor, making a few stops to examine your surroundings before proceeding. It's not long before the task once again becomes mundane and your mind begins to wander.

The afternoon sun's brightness is starting to lose it's brilliance, giving the sky a lazy, orange tint. The rays of light pierce the canopy of trees above, creating a beautiful corridor of golden blades striking the earth. The spectacle is breath taking, even giving you pause to take in the natural wonder. After a few moments of basking in the soothing glow of the failing light, you give one final sigh as you continue on your way, thoughts still lingering on the sight you were just privy to.

"If only it weren't for all the madness...", You murmur to the wind.

Your progress remains undisturbed for the rest of your walk that day. You chuckle to yourself, wondering if it is a gift from the same entity that allowed you that magnificent sight, or if it was just dumb luck. Regardless, you look for a suitable place for rest that night. Remembering the less than peaceful night you previously had, you decide that it is best to keep away from the tree this evening.
