Chapter 10 by Shadow_Cat Shadow_Cat

Where do you bunk for the night?

A fallen log catches your eye

After inspecting the area a bit, you spot a hollowed-out log the seems to be relatively dry. Deciding you'd take shelter over comfort any day, you make a quick circuit about the forest floor to gather leaves and moss for makeshift bedding. After a few minutes of "Interior Decorating", you have a soft place to lie down for the night.

The light begins to fade and the sun slowly sets in the west. You've just enough time to find a quick snack before bed. The area is plentiful with plant life and itisn't long before you track down a few berry bushes. Not being picky, you snatch a few kinds of berries in your palm, and make your way back to your log. You scurry your way into the fallen wood and lay your back against the soft mixed greens just as the last rays of sunlight glimmer out of view, berries in hand.

The wind begins to die down and drifts into a soft hum through the trees. The insects of the forest strike up their symphony of various buzzes and clicks. Their song is one of purity and neutrality. It is a fitting lullaby to enjoy your berries too. They are a tad sour, making you involuntarily smack your lips after every other bite. They are tasty, however, and you continue to munch away at them.

*Crack*

You freeze as the sound of a snapping twig hits your ears. Motionless and very nearly unbreathing, you lie there, all of your senses reaching out for the source of the noise. Moments pass and heartbeats pound, with nothing but silence closing in. You listen desperately, almost hoping for another snap, another confirmation that you didn't imagine the sound. All you hear is nothingness. That's just it though. No bugs humming their tune, no evening breeze through the leaves, just the ever-deafening void.

You sense it. Your instincts are screaming at you to do something. You look past your hindpaws and see nothing but the darkened forest floor through the hole. You could make a run for it. Being certain of any threats and being on even ground is certainly preferable to being trapped. What if whatever is out there hasn't noticed you yet, however? Would it be wise to give away your position if the fight could be avoided completely?

What do you decide?
