Chapter 5 by JackKinnoph JackKinnoph

What to do about Marian?

Tail Her

Whatever this bombastic lion was doing, it wasn’t anything good. Tex needed to nip it in the bud. She turned and pretended to walk away. However, once she had left, the sheriff immediately turned around and gave pursuit.

The chubby lioness seemed none the wiser as she walked toward the edge of town. Waiting there was a wagon, and a single horse to pull it. Pausing for a moment, she gave a cursory look around the scenery. Tex ducked behind a barrel, hiding herself from her suspect’s view.

Marian sighed. Surely she was just hearing things. She got onto the wagon, and drove the horse forward. Tex noted the direction, and hurried back to the station. She needed her own ride if she wanted any chance at keeping up. A smaller town thankfully, it was a quick trip for the weasel to the sheriff’s station. Now with a horse, and a means to keep up, she set off again.

The fresh set of wagon wheels made it a simple matter of following her. Had she skipped town? Tex frowned. Was her gut instinct wrong? Was Marian really just some eccentric visitor? Maybe this was a wild goose chase.

She shoved those thoughts away as she made out something on the horizon: A canyon, with a train bridge above it. What had drawn the lioness here, she wondered. So she wasn’t heading to another town… After a few minutes, she saw the wagon and horse tied off a ways away. Its owner must have been deeper inside. Tying her own mare off, under a scraggly but shady mesquite tree, Tex headed for the bridge, slowly and with gun drawn.

As she rounded a rock, she saw her. The fat lioness was eyeing the bridge, with her hands on her hips. As she leaned forward, her chest brushed the rock, which inadvertently sent a collection of pebbles clattering down to the ground. Marian’s ears perked, and she was quite quick to turn around.

The element of surprise was lost to her.

What should she do?
