Chapter 16 by Squiddog
What does the morning after bring?
Rovni has plans and begins to enact them
Rovni sat on her wooden throne in her hall and pondered about what direction she needed to take her horde in, they had looted and proven to Rovni that this group of goblins were indeed worth her time, a little training and she would have a highly mobile raiding ****.
Their combat skills were lackluster and if they raided bigger places than they needed some true martial training, Rovni could provide that but getting her horde to change into a unified combative group would be a challenge.
The biggest threat to them were proper soldiers and militia as well as mounted foes, horses decimated goblins in a fight, the rider could take their heads off and the horse trampled them into the dirt.
A spear wall was well within her hordes ability and would provide a good lesson in discipline for them as well.
She could spend a day training them and putting the idea into their minds than make the trip to her father to trade, the round trip would take her a little more than a week and by the time she returned she would assess how well they preformed.
"Chieftess? may I have a moment?" A female voice called from her doorway.
"Enter Vera, I was going to look for you soon anyway, come take a seat." Rovni called and the former **** entered her hall and sat on the ground across from Rovni.
"You mentioned last night, needing to discuss what I will be here, in your horde." Vera started, looking up at her chieftess.
"Indeed, every set of hands must work, that said you aren't in any shape to raid or hack down trees, but I do have an idea for you." Rovni began, "My goblins are fine raiders but it is a little hard to scout into a human settlement and I cannot go scout every mark, to that end, assuming you with to stay, I will train you to be my scout." Rovni finished and looked to Vera to hear her response.
"I've been a **** for so long I-I don't know where I could go~... okay I will be your scout chieftess." Vera stated with a nod that made Rovni grin.
"Good, I have plans coming together and soon things will change, for now though, help in camp where you can, once you have a bit more strength I will see to your training." Rovni answered back, a scout would be invaluable for planning raids in the future, and if Vera could be made into a saboteur down the line than all the better.
Vera left Rovni's hall after that and the half-orc felt a sense of progress, she had taken over starving, weak goblins and now had a functional, albeit ill-trained horde, standing up after a few minutes Rovni decided to enact the next stage of advancing her horde.
Exiting her hall Rovni looked across her horde who seemed to have mostly come good from the night before, the mid-morning sun warming the glade.
"Attention my horde!" Rovni called and while it took a few moments her horde amassed before her in the center of their camp, "You proved yourselves to your chieftess in our first raid, peasantry posses no threat against us, however it will not always be simple farmers we raid."
Rovni carefully assessed her hordes reaction and found a few looking unsure and confused, "In settlements, hamlets and towns there are much greater prizes than what you have just tasted, but there also exists the threat of soldiers, militia and possibly a wayward knight or two." Rovni explained which seemed to focus the goblins, "But they still mortal and a well struck blow from a rusty mace or a fine blade kills a man as well as the other."
Rovni took a breath before continuing on, "You have the ferocity of wild beasts, a trait well appreciated by your chieftess, but you need training before we can fight more dangerous foes, so go, each of you fetch a branch the length of a spear and sharpen an end to a point and meet me just outside the camp, your training begins now for greater prizes later." At Rovni's conclusion her horde dissipated and ran in mass towards the woods to grab makeshift spears.
Rovni looked at Vera who remained, looking unsure as to if the orders applied to her or not, "Not you, I want you Vera to watch for now, I don't expect you to join a spear line of goblins." Rovni stated making Vera visibly relax before making her way just out of camp, time to make something greater of her feral horde.
How does training go?
