Chapter 10

What's next?

You start to feel cheated.

After she left, you climbed into the front seat of your car to head home but you couldn't shake a nagging irritation. Something was bothering you and you hadn't been able to quite put your finger on it. Your thoughts and feelings involving your mother and Allison were all tangled up and confused. Allison was gone, truly gone, and yet she walked and talked with you just the same. Your mother... also gone, but not.

That's when it hit you what felt so unfair about the situation: you had to lose two people. Dad lost his wife, partly by choice; Tabitha and David had lost their mom, in a sense, but could still enjoy a motherly relationship with Allison in private. Allison's parents had lost their daughter, but still got to at least see her smiling face and hear her voice.

Only you lost two people. Your girlfriend could never be your girlfriend again, and thanks to your personal history with your mother's new body, your relationship would never be the same. It couldn't be. Every time she got near you she turned you on and your blood ran hot with lust, now also with shame.

You punched the car into gear and tore out of the parking lot, headed for home. You were pissed. This wasn't fair. Sure, it was a tragic accident, and those were never fair, but this was extra shitty for you, specifically. Worse, you couldn't even talk to anyone about it because they were either dealing with it themselves, or they weren't allowed to know the truth.

Legally, your mother was dead, and Allison had suffered minor injuries from the accident and been released with a full bill of health. On paper, that person was Allison. Dad was prepared to treat her like Allison, your siblings seemed awkward and distant, not like they would be with their mother at all.

The whole world regarded her as Allison, more or less. The only person who seemed truly intent on letting Allison stay dead was... Allison—er, your mother. Your aching balls certainly couldn't tell the difference between the old Allison and the new one. Shamefully, you also realized that, biologically and genetically, there'd be no physical issue with the two of you resuming your romantic relationship. The only thing really preventing it was... that she was your mother inside.

During the short drive home, you screamed at nothing and beat your fists against the steering wheel, angry and bitter at the whole universe. Both your mother and Allison were still in your life, after a fashion, and yet you had to mourn the total loss of both of them all the same.
