Chapter 15 by roshutsuwriter

Can they get out?

Yes, and even complete the quest

As the two kobolds approached Alis' cage with their spears raised, she hurriedly finished weaving her spell. Keeping her eyes shut tightly, she reached out to grasp the wooden bars just as they got within range. With a cracking noise the bars split in half, shifting to angle outward before the jagged spikes shot out at the reptiles; one of the few offensive spells her mother had taught her, so it was lucky that her cage had been made of wood rather than unyielding metal.

It was also lucky that she was spared from hearing the sound the spikes made as they impaled their targets, as Sigrid had simultaneously blown the front of her own cage off with a loud explosion. That drew most of the kobolds' attention, though the ones by Fendis had turned to their dying comrades even as the neighboring cage continued to sprout wicked thorns towards them. Alis squirmed out of the opening and quickly channeled another spell to crack open the wolfgirl's own prison, Sigrid doing the same for Rosa behind her.

The guards were all dead and the four of them were free now, but their surprise advantage was lost now. They stood facing a mob of two dozen pissed-off kobolds, completely unarmed and only wearing three articles of clothing between them. Fortunately the twin displays of magical power seemed to cow them for the moment, none of them willing to be the first to charge at the girls despite their leader's bellowed orders. Fendis and Rosa took the opportunity to snatch up a couple undersized spears from beside the fallen kobolds, as Alis and Sigrid began to channel and cast respectively.

Eventually the stalemate was broken as the alpha bodily threw the two kobolds beside it at them, the rest of the mob starting to surge forward as each was assured of their safety by the meatshields in front of them. Fendis and Rosa quickly stepped in front to hold them back in melee while Alis used her magic to trap, block, and distract the kobolds and Sigrid scattered whole groups of them with her explosions.

The alpha could be seen standing head and shoulders above the rest, roaring a challenge as it waded through the crowd-- until it was completely pulverized by an errant spell. The few surviving kobolds froze immediately, looking at the scorched ground where their leader had stood just a moment ago, before turning tail and scrambling over each other in a rush for the cavern's mouth.

The four watched them go, blinking dumbly. Soon the cave was totally silent apart from their ragged breathing and the horses’ whinnying. Rosa poked a body with the butt of her spear, and looked around.

“So, that’s it then?”

It did seem a bit anticlimactic, the whole battle having only lasted a minute or two, though Alis would readily admit to preferring that outcome to the alternative. The kobolds’ apparent frailty and cowardice left them all feeling kind of stupid about getting captured in the first place, though.

“We’re glorified ratcatchers,” Sigurd said dully, “only our first day on the job ended with us getting spanked by the vermin.”

They all hung their heads and sighed in unison.

Oh well, back to town
