You help the girls as they begin packing up the camp.
Illuminated in darkness
The group splits up to head back to the city, and you take Kaeli and Ferra with you. Ferra because she wouldn’t go anywhere but with you, and Kaeli because the two of you need to talk. It’s still before dawn when you head out, and the going is slow in the darkness.
As you walk, Ferra holds your hand, as always. But what’s really surprising is when Kaeli does the same. She seemingly notices your surprise, and shrugs.
“Is it too soon? I’ll admit that I don’t have a good grasp of these things. I’ve never had a relationship to try it.”
You shake your head. “No, it’s fine. I’m just surprised, although after last night, I probably shouldn’t be.”
Kaeli nods. “Yes, last night. Which was wonderful. Thank you, and thank you to Ferra for suggesting it.”
You glance at the golem girl, who gives you a small smile in the darkness. “I could see the attraction. And I knew that master would treat you well.”
You chuckle. “Who knew Ferra was a matchmaker. I’m glad you enjoyed it, Kaeli. And I’m glad you decided to join us. Do you mind if I ask what made you decide so quickly?”
Kaeli is quiet for a moment before answering. “In my life, I only ever had one true friend. And Victoria is not who she was anymore. Other than her, I never sought out companionship for more than a nights pleasure, and even that was rare.”
She sighs, looking into the middle distance. “As the corruption took hold of Victoria, I isolated myself more and more. I was just going through the motions of life, not really caring anymore.”
Kaeli glances at you. “Until you were captured. There was something about you that caught my attention. And so I placed a scrying device in your cell. And I watched.”
You chuckle. “A bit of a voyeur, are we?”
She shrugs. “I suppose. Your growing relationship with Sarah was intriguing. As was your story, as you told it. And your continued defiance, despite your situation. I saw in you what the Order was meant to be. And so, when the breakout happened, I made my decision to aid you, despite what it might cost me.”
Kaeli looks across at Ferra. “Also, seeing the devotion from those closest to you sparked something in me. I didn’t realize it then, not until the two of you burst through my door. I want to be a part of this. I want to share in these feelings.”
She looks into your eyes, and even in the dark, you see the hope shining there. “I want to be with you. I know that now.”
You give her hand a squeeze, and a small smile spreads on her face.
