Chapter 96 by Little_Dragon Little_Dragon

What's next?

Breakfast Sweet Breakfast

John yawned and stretched as he stood. He looked at the closed door of his fitted wardrobe, and decided to take a shower before he checked to see if his new houseguest was awake or not.

He willed his towel into his inventory, before equipping his clothing, which was when his morning wood became very noticeable to him. He ignored it and headed to the bathroom to take a quick shower.

Once done, he returned to his bedroom and dried off, equipping his clothes once again. Next, he booted up his computer and headed to Discord. He opened up his direct messages with Robin and sent Robin his phone number and asked him to text back when he was awake. He shut down the computer, and sent a text to Ellie, smiling as he thought of her.

< J: Morning beautiful, thinking after school we’ll jump into a barrier, that way you can test out your new toy. I’ll send you a text when I finish my last class and we can decide where we’ll meet up xxx >

He stored his phone with a big goofy smile and then walked over to the wardrobe. He gently knocked and the door slowly opened with a small pink-skinned fairy squinting as the sunlight hit her.

“Sorry to wake you, I’m gonna go have breakfast with my mom, do you want me to bring you anything to eat before I head out to school?” John asked.

John could see how the girl's brain attempted to come to life. “Uh, something sweet?” she yawned.

“Uh… sure, I think I have an idea,” he thought out loud. “What about something to drink?”

“Mmmmh, cream… with honey,” she grumbled.

He let out a single laugh. “Could have sworn you’d ask for lemonade or something… Alright, I’ll be back up in like half an hour or so, maybe a little longer.”

John exited the room, leaving the fairy to slowly wake herself up. Heading downstairs, he could already smell food cooking. As he reached the bend in the staircase, he could hear his mother happily humming and singing; she stopped when he reached the bottom of the stairs and walked around into the kitchen.

She smiled brightly at John and quickly closed the distance between them, giving him a tight hug. “Morning, sweetie, hope you slept well,” she sang.

John laughed awkwardly. “Kinda, I guess. From the sounds of it, you slept pretty well yourself though.”

“Oh, I did. I must have been exhausted last night because I fell asleep almost as soon as my head hit the pillow. Not to mention, I had an amazing dream. Anyway, ready for breakfast? I decided to go with banana oatmeal pancakes,” Brenda bubbled, hugging him tighter before moving back to the stovetop.

John smiled and sat at the table. “So, you had a good dream, what about?”

Brenda half turned her face, showing the blush on her cheeks. “Oh, well, yes. But the details are escaping me, sorry. What about you, sweetie? Any dreams?”

John coughed and blushed himself. “Nothing! Uh… Oh! Work? You really aren’t being worked too hard, are you? I know I keep asking but you came home really late last night. That’s not gonna be something they’ll make you do more often, is it?”

Brenda walked over, placed her hands on John’s jawline on either side of his face, and kissed his forehead. “Aww, no need to worry, sweetie. As I said, we’re just a little extra busy, but it’s getting close to the end of the project.”

John’s worry hadn’t quite subsided, it had shifted to a few conflicting emotions as Brenda essentially buried his face in her chest as she hugged him. John both wanted to push Brenda away and hold her there tightly at the same time, but before his brain could short circuit or make an actual decision, Brenda pulled back, quickly moving back to the frying pan that contained a pancake.

While Brenda continued to cook, John realised he’d need a way to get everything for Dahlia. The main idea for what he could get her to eat was cereal, though he could also probably get away with asking for another pancake too, and he needed to make her drink. After a short while of thinking, he had an idea.

“Hey, Mom, I’m pretty hungry this morning, could I get an extra pancake?” he asked.

Brenda turned to look at him with a smile. “Of course, sweetie. It’s not a problem whatsoever.”

To keep the pancakes warm, Brenda had been putting them into the low heat of the oven. As soon as John saw her putting the first pancake on a plate, he stood and walked over to the fridge, looking inside and closing it before opening the cupboards.

“What are you looking for? Sweetie?” Brenda asked, stopping before opening the oven.

“Huh? Oh, just looking for the chocolate spread, thought the pancakes would taste amazing with some, I’m sure I saw some in the grocery bags the other day,” John explained.

Brenda’s cheeks gained a slight bit of pink. “Oh, uh, well. I think I might have left it in my bag when I took it upstairs. I’ll go get it now.”

John smiled as Brenda left. He hadn’t actually seen a jar of chocolate spread, but he knew his mother always had a stash in her room to sate her sweet tooth and used it as an excuse to get her out of the room.

Quickly, John stored the fresh pancake in his inventory, then he poured out some milk and honey, made a small bowl of sugary cereal and stored that in his inventory too, before sitting back at the table.

Brenda returned with the jar of chocolate spread in hand. “Sorry about that, sweetie. I should really remember to empty my bag when we get home from shopping.” She stopped as she walked over to the oven. “Where did that pancake go?” she turned to look at John.

“Uhh, well, I was in the middle of an argument with my stomach when the pancake just vanished.” John laughed.

Brenda smiled and shook her head before splitting the pancakes between two plates.

The two enjoyed their pancakes; John couldn’t help but let out audible appreciation of the delicious breakfast in the form of moans, to which Brenda just giggled.

“So, think you’ll be home late again today?” John inquired.

Brenda thought for a moment. “I’m not quite sure, hopefully not. I won’t be home as late as yesterday, at the very least, because I don’t have any meetings scheduled for today. What about you? Will you be out again with your lady friend?”

John couldn’t help feeling his cheeks begin to heat up. “Uhm, well… yeah, I think I’m also meeting Robin too; I bumped into him on the way home yesterday and it turns out he and my online friends were getting worried about me since I hadn’t messaged them since last Sunday. It seems that going out and being sociable is messing with my old shut-in routine,” he joked.

“Oh? Robin? Is he okay? And how did you bump into him? I thought you guys wanted to keep the mystery alive? I remember I got an earful from you all, just for suggesting you video call each other,” Brenda recounted.

“Oh, come on, we did not yell at you. It’s just not how we did things, it was better to just be faceless voices so we could get into the games better,” John defended. “Either way, I recognised his voice and then he told me off for vanishing, so I might be seeing him again after school.”

“Well, please make sure to keep me posted, sweetie. I know you’re making an effort to be more outgoing but I still worry about you,” she said with an unsure smile.

“Of course, Mom, and that goes for you too then; you’ve been working extra hard the past week. If you’re putting extra hours in for more money or anything like that, just tell me, I’ll help out by doing some odd jobs or something,” John offered.

Brenda laughed and a bright smile wormed its way onto her face. “No, sweetie, I’m not taking extra hours because we need money, we might not be rich enough for a fancy mansion but we are doing quite well; if it had come down to it, I’d have even paid for you to go to Ashcroft myself. So there is no reason for you to start worrying about money.”

Brenda looked at her phone before standing. “Oh, I got a little carried away with time; I’d better head off. I love you, sweetie.”

She smiled broadly and moved around the table. She looked down at John before she leaned down and gave him a peck on the lips; it caught him off guard more than a little. It wasn’t like Brenda never gave him a small familial peck on the lips before, but the feeling lingered, almost like she was still kissing him for a moment longer than she actually was. The past few incidents with Brenda probably didn’t help either. ’Stop thinking about it, it’s just a normal kiss.’ John put his imaginary foot down.

While John had a slight mental struggle, Brenda collected her things and headed out of the house. Once John had shaken off his confusing thoughts, he took a look at the time and saw he had enough time to take things up to Dahlia before heading out for the bus.

Entering his room, he found the fairy sitting on his computer chair pressing random keys on the keyboard. He chuckled and moved towards her. “Feel free to use the computer, though let me set it up for you”

John pulled the chair with Dahlia still in it; sliding it across his floor enough to give himself access to the computer. He turned on the computer and created an account for her, before pulling Dahlia back.

“What’s with the strange typewriter?” she asked.

John laughed. “It’s a keyboard, similar to a typewriter but it uses the computer instead of punching letters onto a sheet of paper. I’d like to show you how to use the computer properly, but I am gonna be in a little bit of a rush anyway, I’ll just give you a short crash course.”

John quickly showed Dahlia how to use the mouse and keyboard and how to navigate the browser; he made sure to open Google and YouTube so that she’d be able to just go on them, which she seemed to be grasping slowly. He did notice that Dahlia seemed to be avoiding looking at him, and when she did, she blushed. Being **** to ask what was wrong and being in a bit of a rush, John didn’t question her on it.

“Anyway, I’m going to have to get off to school soon. Here, I brought you breakfast: cereal, a pancake, and the honey milk you asked for,” he said, pulling them out of his inventory and onto his desk. “I’m not sure what time I’ll get home, feel free to go around the house, maybe don’t snoop in my mom's room though. And again, make sure my mom doesn’t see you.”

Dahlia nodded as she shovelled the still hot pancake into her mouth. John rubbed his forehead and sighed as he exited his room and left the house. On his way to the bus stop, he heard his phone and pulled it out to check the message.

< R: Sup man, it’s Robin. You need something? Or were you just trying to get my number? >

< J: Well it’d be a little hard to arrange a meeting place once I’m out of school, wouldn’t it? Plus I wanna know what kind of powers you got. Whatever you did last night looked cool. >

< R: Well yeah good point, already have an idea of when and where we should meet? I’m literally available all day. And I’m not going to make it that easy for you, brag about your gamer-based powers and then just want me to spill the beans? Don’t think so! >

< J: How am I supposed to think about the best use of all our abilities if I don’t know everyone's abilities? >

< R: I know your abilities and that little girlfriend of yours’ abilities. Don’t forget I’ve strategized our party more than a few times, so don’t worry about it for now. You’ll get to enjoy the show when we start. >

John clicked his tongue and rolled his eyes.

< J: Such a damn drama queen. You know you don’t have to show off to me or Ellie, right? >

< R: I know I don’t have to, but it’s not every day that I find out one of my friends is a late bloomer, so I choose to show off ;) >

John saw the bus and started jogging towards the stop, managing to reach it before the bus.

< J: Hey, gotta go, the bus is here. Might shoot you a text while I’m in class, so if I don’t reply, you know why. >

John put his phone away and sighed as the bus came to a stop and the door opened.
