Chapter 5 by MikeHumsgood
Do you buy her a drink?
Let me buy you a drink
You turn toward Melanie and say, “It’s getting pretty warm out there. Would you like a drink on me?
She smiles and says, “I’d love a drink but not sure how Matt would feel about that.”
You reply, “Don’t worry about him, just tell John what you’d like and it’s on me. Get something for Matt too, if you’d like. I can be the bigger man.”
“I’m sure you are,” she says in a playful manner while giving you another once over.
Getting up from your seat, you turn toward John and leave a $50 on the counter saying “whatever she’d like, it’s on me.”
As you make your way down the hallway toward the mens room, you keep thinking about your interactions with Melanie. It feels nice to have someone else flirting with you, let alone a drop dead gorgeous younger woman.
After you finish in the restroom, you return to collect your change from John at the bar. Melanie is still there and is now sipping on her drink. She turns toward you, putting her hand on your bicep and giving a little squeeze while saying, “thanks for the drink, I needed something hard to take the edge off!”
You smile and say, “my pleasure, Melanie!”
You then exit the clubhouse and walk to your cart before heading to the 10th tee. You slow down as you pass Matt as he is putting on the practice green and ask how his round is going. “No complaints here,” he says. “I’m sitting 1 over but I own the back nine here.”
“Good luck,” you say to him as you pick up the pace of the cart and make your way to the next tee. “No reason to be a prick towards the guy,” you think to yourself.
You resume your round with another long bomb down the left side of the 10th fairway, then hop in your cart and are off to finish the last nine holes.
The second half of the round wasn’t as stellar as the first nine, but you still managed to card a 2 under par, something you hadn’t managed in a couple of years. You are more than satisfied with the result and head back to the clubhouse to settle up with John and rub in the score. “Never let a good opportunity go wasted, you think to yourself.”
After you pay for your round and give John some crap about him not even cracking par this year, you exit the clubhouse and head toward your car. As you are changing out of your golf shoes at the trunk of your car, you see Matt and Melanie rolling toward you. They stop near you and Matt asks how the round went. “Not too bad for an old guy,” you reply sarcastically. “Couldn’t quite get it going on the back nine but I’ll take a 69 any day of the week!”
Matt seems a little upset by your comment and quips, “69? What, did you only play 16 holes?” while laughing at his own smart ass remark.
You just let the comment slide as you finish putting your bag and shoes in the car. He stops their cart two cars down from yours and starts unloading the bags. He tells Melanie he is going to drop off the cart and use the mens room before they leave.
After he pulls away, Melanie turns toward you and says, “Nice shooting!”
“Thanks,” you reply. “How about you Melanie? What did you shoot?”
“I managed a 74 but that was actually pretty good considering how fussy Matt was most of the round. Seems you got into his head earlier and he couldn’t shake it off.”
“Well, that’s golf for you,” you say. “Some good days, some bad days. Sometimes it just takes a bit of luck.”
You then wish her well and get into your car. As you are about to back out of the parking spot, you hear a knock at your window. It’s Melanie. She hands you a piece of paper and says, “Here’s my number. I’d love to return your favor and buy you a drink sometime. Give me a call and promise to not be a stranger!”
“It was great meeting you Melanie!” you reply. “It was honestly the only thing better than my round today.”
You see her blush at your comment and then you are off. Time to return home as there is plenty of work to be done.
After you return home and grab a refreshing shower, you head downstairs for a quick lunch. As you contemplate your morning at the course, you can’t help but shake the mental images and playful words of Melanie. You then remember that she gave you her number.
Are you bold enough to take her up on her offer of drinks?
