Chapter 5 by Galvan
What is the sound?
A knock at the door
You're confused at who could be knocking at your door at this time. Were you too loud or something playing Tekken? You go over and crack it open just enough to see who's on the other end. It's a taller young woman who you've never seen before. She's in jeans and a baggy T-shirt, barefoot. Her light brown hair is in a ponytail, and she has a phone in her hand. She's leaning against your door frame.
"Hey, Nina is coming back from Danny's right now but she's gonna make a stop at a pizza place on the way. Do you want anything?"
"Uhh, who?"
"Danny, you know, her kinda annoying boyfriend who graduated last year but she still drives 2 hours round trip just to see?"
"Um, oh yeah, I remember," you lie. "Um, get me a medium half pep—"
"Pepperoni and sausage, half plain. Extra cheese and a Mtn. Dew. I got you, Ev. Can, bottle, or two-liter?"
"Um, actually I have some bottles in my mini-fridge." You point your thumb behind you to the mini fridge beside your desk. The girl squints her eyes.
"What mini-fridge?" You turn around and see what you swear was your personal mini fridge is now just a waste basket.
"Umm," you stutter. "That's weird. Get me a two-liter then."
"Alright." The girl leaves, texting what you assume to be your order on her phone. "Hey Eva," she calls out before you close the door. "Maybe take some time off those games."
"Got it," you say before shutting the door.
Only after you lock it do you exhale. Who was that? Why do you have no memories of her? What happened to your fridge? You walk over to where your fridge was and put your hands on the sides of the waste basket. Suddenly, a memory hits you. You're unpacking with your mother in your new room. She goes to unhook the mini fridge from the van but you remind her the suites have a fridge that only you and your other suitemates can access so there's no need. Instead, you grab the new waste basket Bella suggested you buy since the ones the rooms have are so small and plop it next to your desk.
"Bella," you realize. "That's her name. Okay. So physical objects restore memories that directly deal with them and talking to the person gives me memories of them specifically. New people can apparently change the timeline beyond their involvement too. Huh." You sit on your bed, looking across to the empty cot. In your old, Sage-less life you got a double since it was the cheapest and lucked out with your roommate being a no-show. You guess the program likes to keep things similar if you're still alone but in a suite now. You look at your door. You should probably meet your new, well, old, suitemates. You hesitate, hoping a reason to not socially interact comes up. You get one who you hear a notification from your phone go off.
"Do you want Nina to pick up your prescription?" A text from Bella says. Wait, you have a prescription? Okay, time for some answers. You get up and march to the door when you see in the corner of your eye the symbol for the character creator. Hmm. There's is another way....
Mundane hard way or magic easy way?
