Chapter 8 by Yabusa Yabusa

A knock on the door? Your phone's ringing? Something else?

Tori's phone--she's needed at a nearby farm

You and Tori looked to the kitchen counter, where Tori's phone had been charging. It buzzed a number of times, as a flurry of texts filled her phone's notifications. Tori sprang into action, hopping to her phone with enough suddenness to startle the cat.

"Ned halp. Porblem double-u slash bell. Bell. Not bell. Belly. Bella. Bunny s suck." Tori frowned as she read the texts as verbatim as possible, taking a moment to decipher the poorly-worded texts. She looked over at your bewildered face. "It's from Cassidy at Stella Ranch, she should really just call me instead of texting... She has a pet rabbit named Bella, guess Bella isn't feeling well. Oh, this is perfect actually!"

You quirked an eyebrow. "It's perfect that a bunny is ill?"

"No, that's not what I mean," Tori said, clapping her hands together. "It's the perfect opportunity for me to show you my proactive channeling! Bella's a pretty mild-mannered bun, even if I miss on my channeling technique and her needs override everything before I can touch her. If I do it right, then you can see how I diagnose a problem though."

Before you can agree, Tori hurried to her bedroom, grabbing an armful of clothes out of one of her boxes in hopes that she has enough to make a complete outfit. You were already in decent clothes for the day, being an earlier riser than Tori, even on a Saturday like today. Incredibly quickly, your friend changed into a proper outfit, in cargo pants and a partially zipped hoodie in green over a button-up blouse. Pulling her hair back into a ponytail, where just a few wavy strands above her forehead escaped, looked like it solved the frizzy bedhead appearance pretty easily. Back in her trendier glasses, it was a total change of pace. You liked her latest look and style choices, though you still appreciated the familiarity of how she had been moments earlier...

By the time you had plates loaded in the dishwasher, Tori was ready to go, carrying a messenger bag and a duffel bag on either side of her. "If you don't mind, we can just leave the duffel in your car for future trips," Tori said, tugging you behind her to get out to Stella Ranch as soon as possible.

After a half-hour drive filled with your and Tori's usual joking and poorly singing along with the radio to the only station that didn't play nonstop country songs, you pulled up at Stella Ranch, parking outside the farmhouse. A larger heavyset woman with a friendly smile and a plaid shirt--Cassidy, no doubt--waved you and Tori over.

"Thanks so much for coming, hon," Cassidy said, offering up a big hug to Tori. "Who's your friend? Where's Mike?"

"Mike and I didn't work out... this here's Peter, he's actually a friend of mine since we were in kindergarten, believe it or not. He moved back to our hometown not long ago, so I'm staying with him at the moment."

Cassidy nodded politely at you. "Peter, a pleasure. Honestly, I knew from the first day that Mike wasn't the one, bless his heart."

Tori leaned in close to you to whisper. "She said Mike and I were destined to marry the first time she met him..." With a clear of her throat, she turned back to Cassidy. "So where's the little princess?"

"Out in the quarantine room, just like you always request." Cassidy turns to you, crossing her arms. "Don't know if you're familiar with the medical needs of farm animals, Victoria's got some peculiar ways of handling them. We turned one of the rooms in our shed into a 'quarantine space' where she does all her investigation while other vets just go to the animal. But hey, she's got some sort of animal whisperer thing going on, she's never steered me wrong, so the extra hassle is by far worth it. You a vet too, hon?"

You shook your head. "Architecture, actually. I'm really just here to be the driver and an extra set of hands if Tori needs them."

"Alright, well I won't bother you any more. When you're done, I'll just be inside, no need to knock, just holler!"

Cassidy went back inside, and Tori handed you the messenger bag, before she started to walk around behind one of the barns to a building, brimming with tools, but it almost looked like another house! "That's the shed..?!" you asked, and Tori nodded in reply. She looked around, to make sure nobody else was watching.

"Billy and Ty look like they're over by the harvester, looks like the Bill got his son the twenty-two he wanted for his birthday," Tori said. "They're pretty distracted though, if they look our way tap me on the shoulder, okay?"

You nodded, and Tori held out one of her hands. You recognized the energy flowing from it to be like the purple light from yesterday, but this time it was a steady blue. You guessed, accurately, that if Tori is in control of her curse, the channeling magic takes on a blue hue, while the needs of a subject turn the magic redder into the purple energy from before.

"You're clear, go on ahead," you said. Tori opened the door, stepping inside to see an orange Netherland Dwarf rabbit, a tiny little thing with perky ears, huddled in the corner of the makeshift pen in the quarantine room.

"Crud, she used the big pen. This might be a little tricky." You watched as Tori moved as fast as she could to reach the rabbit in time, which was apparently a critical technique--you could see strands of red energy start to swirl into Tori's hands, flowing from Bella to Tori and starting to alter the color of her magic. If Bella hopped around a lot before Tori could touch the rabbit, you expected the result to be similar to yesterday if the glow turned too purple, so you closed the door as you entered and hoped that Bella would be cooperative enough for Tori to reach her quickly!

Does Bella cooperate? Or does she move out of the way at first?
