Ashley (who just turned 18)

Ashley took her time getting out of bed today. In the past she loved her birthday but this was no ordinary birthday. Today she turns 18 which means today her name will be entered into the lottery.

No one in her family had ever won the lottery, her older sister got really lucky 3 years ago. However Ashley wasn’t feeling too confident. It didn’t help that her brother Nick was constantly teasing her. When she got downstairs for breakfast Nick had poured cereal into a dog bowl. “Hey sis I got breakfast ready for you.”

“Not funny Nick.” She replied but Nick just laughed at her. One of her friends won the lottery a few months ago and ever since then she stopped going to school and now spends her days naked hopping around people’s yards like a bunny rabbit.

It was a normal everyday sight, but Ashley was horrified of becoming like them. She liked being human. She could go to concerts and drive around the city. She loved the freedom humans had. She didn’t want to loose it and become some kind of animal.

She tried to keep it off her mind all day, but people kept bringing it up at school. “Are you nervous?” One student asked her.

“Hey if you become a pet can I have your locker?” Said another.

Her English teacher even said, “You May loose your humanity but I still expect your paper on Mark Twain by Friday.”

The worst of it came from the person she hated the most. Her rival Gabby. Gabby was the resident mean girl. Ashley was fairly popular but Gabby was homecoming queen. The two of them shared a birthday so they were in the lottery together. Instead of being nervous Gabby just taunted her. “When they pull out your name the first thing I’m gonna do is buy your ass from your parents. I can’t wait to treat you like the bitch you are.”

“What if they call your name? What then?”

“Yeah right. See you later bitch…hmm are you a bitch or are you a pussy. I can’t wait to find out!” Gabby said as she walked away.

Ashley felt her heart sink into her stomach. When she got home her eyes were glued to her tablet. She kept refreshing the page to see what name would be drawn. Then it came up…
