Chapter 17 by haileytraynor haileytraynor

Who is it?

Liara T'Soni

Shepard turned hesitantly to see the beautiful blue asari standing behind her. She felt her heart drop immediately, a look of longing on her face. “Liara…” Shepard whispered instinctively leaning in to kiss her, but pulling away as she realized what she was doing. “What are you doing here?”

“Shepard… I…” Liara said, saddened. “I’m here with… business.”

“Business?” Shepard said. “What do you…”

“Hey, babe, come on now,” a female green asari said, pulling Liara in and kissing her as Shepard stood there dumbfounded. “We need to go get some of those weapon upgrades for…”

Shepard turned away, she could see the look on Liara’s face. “Shiala, please… let’s discuss this later. Just give me a moment,” Liara whispered.

Shiala looked over and noticed Shepard standing there. She gulped and nodded as she walked away. As soon as they were alone, Shepard glared at Liara, hurt and angry. “You don’t have to LIE to me, Liara. If you’ve moved on, just tell me.”

“I didn’t lie,” Liara said.

“Yes you did,” Shepard said. “I don’t care what loopholes you’re using. You should have told me the real reason you wanted to end things…”

“Jane, that’s not why!” Liara yelled as she chased after Shepard who was walking at a very fast pace. “I promise you this isn’t-”

“Don’t tell me it isn’t what it looks like!” Shepard shouted, turning only once to face Liara before continuing her walk. “Don’t lie to me, Liara. I thought I deserved better. I thought I deserved the truth. Not some made up or twisted story to avoid hurting my feelings. News flash, I’m already hurt! So just tell me the truth!”

“It… it started on one of my intel missions to Zhu’s Hope,” Liara said. “At first it just meant nothing… it was nothing. Then… it started to escalate, something about Shiala intrigued me, so I started to run studies on her… it required… a lot of one on one sessions. You were retired. You were at home… I… I didn’t… I didn’t want to hurt you, but I knew my feelings for Shiala were getting stronger… I didn’t want to hurt you…”

Shepard sat down letting her slide against the wall to the ground. “You should have told me the truth…” Shepard said. “I deserved the truth, didn’t I?”

“Of course you did,” Liara said, kneeling down to Shepard’s level, touching her knees. “But I was scared. I loved you. I still do… but… I have other feelings… things that complicate… everything…”

“Liara,” Shepard said, looking up but then looking back down at the floor. “Why didn’t you ask me how I would feel about a third partner? Why didn’t you just give me the chance to say yes or no… instead you just decided I would end things… you just assumed that my love for you… wouldn’t extend to anyone else…”

“Shepard… I… you would have… but… I’m sorry,” Liara said. “I believed that your culture, humans were more inclined to closed relationships.”

“Liara… you didn’t give me the opportunity to say anything,” Shepard said. “You left me with the lies you came up with… you made me feel… worthless…”

“I…”

“Just go,” Shepard said. “I’m done with this. I hope you’re happy. That’s all I want for you. Just don’t lie to me next time.”

Liara looked saddened, unsure of what to do… but she stood to her feet and walked away. Shepard only then gazed upwards, looking as the asari swayed her hips… walking away. Shepard felt tears as she watched the love of her life… walk away.
