Chapter 18
by
Hellena
Do you figure it out before it's "too late", whenever that may be?
Taylor finds you in about five minutes, so hopefully you didn't need to figure it out BEFORE telling her.
"Maya!"
You hear a familiar voice cry from behind you, and can't stop yourself from flinching.
"We've been looking everywhere for you!" Taylor says, as she scowls at you from beside your chair, "Seriously, we were about ready to start looking for demon hunters or something - you've been gone for hours, and we thought that Ms. Devlin might have you locked up in, like, a sex dungeon or something. Where have you been, and how did that end with you eating lunch while we were panicking?"
...Frick. You had really been hoping to put off this conversation until tonight. Not just because you hadn't remotely figured out Ms. Devlin's plans, but also because you really hadn't had time to process everything before... This.
Your eyes glance towards the letter, and then back up to Taylor. The request was clear. You had to go into detail about what had happened in that room. But... Dang it, maybe you could leave the cliff notes version to Miss Devlin, and give Taylor the details tonight. You didn't really see another choice here, not without hurting somebody.
"Most of that time was spent waiting for her office to 'free up'," You begin, bitterly, "Her office has become very popular since this morning's latest assignment, and Ms. Devlin seemed quite intent on enjoying it to the fullest, to speak obliquely."
Taylor nodded, scowl still on her face.
"Of course, once I was in there..." You sigh, and push the letter towards her, "She figured out our plan nearly immediately. Still let me make a fool out of myself trying, then she just points out that I spent the entire time glancing at my purse. ...Kind of, at least. Frick, I have to tell you the full story anyway, so please, just read the letter first. It... Covers the important points, for now."
Taylor's scowl turns to a look of worry in an instant as she listens to you. At least instead of asking questions, she starts reading the letter.
"I'd say we should have just dropped the class, but honestly, I don't think that would matter," You say morosely towards your empty plate, "She wasn't just enjoying her students, she was making bargains with them. Classmates would go in flat, and come out looking like supermodels. People are going to hear, and then how many other students are going to go to her? Teachers, even. Heck, maybe even family next. Where does it end?"
"And it doesn't matter if you're acting sensible." You go on, "Ten minutes in there, and I was a blithering idiot convinced she was my second-best friend. If she'd asked me for anything, I'd have given to her. As it was, two minutes in, I was convinced my soul could fetch a nice price if I put some proper thought into it. I just wanted the time to think of the right price."
"...Hey, Maya?" Taylor speaks up for a moment, "What exactly did you OD on?"
You just bury your face in your hands in response. You don't... You don't even want to think about that right now, let alone admit to it. But hearing about an OD, you can't blame her for being worried right now. You certainly wouldn't trust Ms. Devlin to fret too much about the side effects.
"...Breast milk," You mumble into your hands.
"...I'm sorry, I didn't hear that," Taylor asks, leaning in more closely.
"Breast milk!" You yell, emotions getting away from you, "I overdosed on demonic breast milk!"
...And now the entire cafeteria had heard you, and you can see more than a few familiar faces glance your way before returning to their own conversation. Frick.
"Demonic. Breast milk," Taylor asked again, eyes as wide as saucers.
"I don't know what it did, exactly, but it was like I was one of those old voodoo zombies," You answer, "I was under her complete control, doing anything she asked without question. Except, it was like that pretty much as soon as I let her touch me, so maybe it did something completely different. She seemed mildly worried about the effects, though, so..."
"So maybe that's why your emotions are running wild like this?" Taylor asks, tapping her chin thoughtfully.
"No, I'm pretty sure that's the mind ****," You answer, hurt.
"I'm sorry, that came out wrong," Taylor replies, holding your hand gently, "I don't mean to belittle what happened while we were separated. I literally don't know what happened, and I doubt I would figuratively either. I just mean... The Maya I know wouldn't be talking to her food about how some evil demon had already taken over the school and it was only a matter of time until we were her slaves. She'd find a way to free the students, and if that was truly impossible, if it was truly hopeless, she'd find a way to run. She wouldn't just... Give up, because her opponent seemed to strong. There's always another way, that's what you always told me, right? We just have to find it."
...Frick, that wasn't the kind of thing you wanted to hear right now. Not... Not from her, not knowing what you know.
"Please..." You say quietly, "Just finish the letter."
Nodding, she backs off and does so.
"...Oh," Is all she has to say.
Wait, no, she has to have more to say, right?
