Chapter 7 by Villaromani Villaromani

Who would dare try to talk with me?

My Best Friend

The girl who approached me is none other than my very best friend, Sunny. She is great, just seeing her makes me smile. She is probably the only person that actually cares about me, even when she is just nice to everyone. She was always there for me, and even though we don’t talk that often anymore, I think we still hold the memories from when we were a lot closer dearly in our hearts. When we were younger, we pretty much played together every day. I got to learn a few things about girls thanks to her, since I never got to figure that out on my own. I also taught her some things, but we mainly picked up each others’ interests, so she got into games because of me, while I got into drawing and a bit of art thanks to her.

Sunny has always been a pretty cute girl, probably the prettiest when she tries hard enough, so I feel pretty lucky to have her as my very best friend. What’s special about our friendship is that it goes way back, however, it hasn’t developed much in the past years. Regardless, we still have seen each other grow up, so we are like family, or that’s what I think. It’s a bit difficult to ignore the fact that she is actually very pretty, especially because she does have some very attractive features, but I’ve grown to love her as a friend.

She does look slightly different. She usually rocks a blonde, stylish bob haircut, but she does tend to dye her hair quite a lot. However, I didn’t expect her to dye her hair pink, it’s not that noticeable, like a blondish pink, and I actually like it a lot, but she looks very cute. As always, she wears a small, cyan bow on her hair, and a few other tiny accessories that make her face look even prettier. But while she distracts me with her new look, I find myself a bit speechless when staring at her light yellow eyes. I never really stare directly at her eyes, but for once, I notice how well they match her hair and overall look, as well as expressing her lively personality with their bright color.

—Hey Andy! I missed you! How are you doing?—

Her voice sounds just as playful as ever, but she actually catches me a bit off guard with that nickname. I haven’t heard it in a while, but I do love it. It also makes me smile more than before, which inspires me to come up with an answer I’ve never said before.

—Nothing, just admiring how good you look…—

My response seems to surprise Sunny, as she chuckles nervously. I don’t think she is that taken aback by my answer, but I do fear she thinks it was weird. I keep smiling confidently, hoping she won’t react badly. Luckily, she does seem to like it, as she keeps smiling. Thank god, that could have killed my confidence right there and then.

—Thank you. But you also look a bit different…—

—Oh really? Why?—

—You look happier than usual. It’s sort of like you enjoy being in school now—

Sunny laughs, but I think she is trying to hide her suspicions. I try to keep my composure and maintain my attitude. I don’t stop smiling, even though that could be an odd thing for me to do. I only now realize that Sunny might be the only one who finds out about my plan. She would be the only one to notice a big difference in my behavior. She knows how I was before, and if she sees me how I want to be now, I’m sure she will be weirded out by it, even if I do become more charismatic. But regardless, instead of trying to be like before with her to not raise suspicion, I just commit to this new me.

—Oh well, I’m just happy to see you again—

I’m genuinely happy to see Sunny again, but I don’t want to tell her that I’m excited for school, because she knows everything I’ve been through, and that would definitely be out of character for me. She still looks at me skeptically, like she is analyzing my behavior, trying to find something odd to point out. But like I’ve never stared at her in the eyes, or smiled this much before, I think I’m pressuring her to give me some sort of response.

—Then I’m glad you are happy, it makes me happy too—

I love her sweetness, the way her voice is both playful and heartfelt at the same time. I can’t be completely sure if she is being honest, but from her friendly smile, I trust that she is just happy to see me happy. If she does like me being more confident, then this plan will work out great. Also, it’s nice to see that it’s working out. I mean, she knows me and we are best friends after all, but I’m sure that eye contact and all of that smiling made this interaction ten times better. But now I’m ruining it by explaining everything, stealing the essence of that nice interaction. Yea, I better shut up, and what was she saying?

—So are you ready for these last few months? Remember that you need to get those grades up—

Sunny usually always lectures me about my poor performance at school, but I like it when she does that, because it shows that she actually cares about me. She probably cares more about my grades than myself, or even my parents, who still haven’t found out about me possibly failing this grade. Sunny also tried to help me several times to study, and she isn’t that much smarter than me, but she did help me a bit. But since I gave up on everything at school a long time ago, I think it’s time for me to get some of that help, if she is kind enough to offer it again, of course.

—Yea, yea. I know, mom. I’ll pay the teacher or something, I don’t know, but I’ll find a way…—

My playfulness makes Sunny laugh again, and that just further proves that I do have the potential to make a girl happy, even if it’s just my best friend. I hope I can make other girls laugh with my sense of humor, but for now, Sunny’s cute laugh is enough for me.

—Anyway, I’ll see you in class. But you have to go, okay? I don’t want any of your excuses…—

Sometimes Sunny can be very demanding of me, but I think it’s justifiable. I do tend to miss classes a lot, and seeing how she tries to encourage me to be a responsible student inspires me to be kind like her. She isn’t the most responsible, but she does care a lot about school, so she is probably the perfect friend to have when I’m trying to get my grades up. But after she reminds me to attend class, she walks away, holding her books tightly, because apparently she doesn’t like carrying a backpack around. I wave to her and cheer for myself silently. Yes, that’s the first girl I talk to today. If I keep this up, I’ll end up finding a girlfriend in no time. Ha, love to see that I still have a sense of humor.

I distract myself again, but then I notice that a lot more people are arriving at school. I try to blend in, but I stay around the bathroom area. There are still about 5 minutes before the first class starts, so I just have to survive here for a bit longer. My bullies usually don’t come around here, only after they finish training, or whenever they want to have sex with some random girl. It’s too early for their training, but I’m not sure about sex, they are just so horny all of the time. But luckily, I manage to avoid everyone, until I see another girl right next to me. It takes me a while to see who she is, but when I finally realize, I suddenly have the courage to talk to her…

Who is this next girl that I find?
