Chapter 53 by TheSpectator TheSpectator

Do you find Kenji and Scarlet?

Actually, they find us.

"First of all," Amara begins. "Does Kenji know you're off looking for me?"

"Yes," Flora answers for you. "He's also probably really pissed at us because we kind of put him under fire."

Amara exchanges look with Flora. "Did he get hit? Japanese contractors aren't cheap."

"No," Flora gives you a quick look and then returns her gaze to Amara. "Of course not. I'm sure he's fine."

"I'm assuming you rod here on horseback, right?" Amara asked. You nod. She thinks for a few seconds and gnaws on her lips. "If Kenji got out, he would have probably returned to the horses... Hopefully."

The conversation doesn't go any further that than. And to be frank, you're happy it doesn't. If Amara found out you got one of her expensive contractors killed, she might not want to keep you around, regardless of your importance. On your way out of the armory, Amara fills up some bags filled with tools, ammo, and smaller firearms, mostly blocky black guns and some other pocket pistols. She hands you a bag and another to Flora. Before you know it, you're sneaking back into the streets...

...

...

Entire squads roll by. Each man is bulky and armed to the teeth with polished rifles. Flora makes a comment about this, but neither you or Amara give her a response. You aren't sure how Amara feels, but you begin to feel a little hopeless. You haven't been in a situation this out of control in your entire career as a contractor. All that mattered is that you got out of the Heights area, but that was much easier said that done.

The three of you got closer to where you first scaled the wall. With guidance, you're able to tell Amara where you came from and she was able to slip in and out of alley's without getting caught. You follow close behind, eager to get out of the streets and over the walls.

When you finally reached the walls, you dug your feet in and helped each of the girls over. Flora is the one that helps you scale the wall too. Once grounded on the other side, you bolt to where you left the horses. Upon reaching the horses, you found them undisturbed and alone. You curse under your breath since you know you're going have to return to pick up the others. Amara, also coming to this conclusion, spins on her heel and looks at you, piecing together an idea that most definitely involves you. Her mouth open to say something, but she's interrupted by a massive explosion that causes even the ground to shake. Amara exhales. "That was ours. We'll wait here for 10 minutes, if neither Scarlet or Kenji get here, both of us will go back."

"I can come, too!" Flora chases. This earns her a glare from Amara, or automatically denies her request to join you.

The town you left is burning. Silhouettes of armed men bounce corner to corner, stopping the spread of the fire. Distant orders are barked and they scatter all about. You aren't sure if the people in this place deserve any of this. This isn't discussed however. Movement in the brush you cut through a few minutes ago bursts with live. Two figures, one male and another female, emerge cut and bruised. Kenji is holding his side and Scarlet has her cheek sliced. Amara jumps to his side and helps both of them to their horses. She has a private conversation with both of them, leaving you and Flora out of it, making you feel like outsiders.

...

...

The ride back is nice, you suppose. Even as it begins to snow again. You glance up at the column of horses with their organic payload of humans. You, Kenji. Scarlet, Flora and now Amara. You wonder with the main hunching back what this will mean. Pay raise? A lecture? More running around? Alexandra might be dead for all you know. You hide your face when you remember her pissing all over you during your last sexual session. Where did that come from?

From the rear, you notice that the column is shifting. Someone has stopped and is waiting for you to catch up to them. You suspected Flora, but it’s Amara. She rides beside you, not saying anything, but you can still feel her eyes occasionally shooting you a glance and clearing her throat, making it painfully clear that she wants you to start a conversation.

What do you do with Amara?
