Chapter 119 by Jpyric Jpyric

Hopefully, this goes smoothly.

Delicate work

Sanni wasn’t kidding when she said this would take a while. You suppose that essentially rewiring a golem brain is a delicate process, however, so you’re not surprised. She takes several breaks, and seems hopeful about the work she’s doing, though she definitely seems more and more tired each time.

The rest of you aren’t idle either. Several times she has Andrew infuse more of his magic into Rina, as she molds it into what is needed. Another time, she has you use your powers to engrave tiny runic script into the back of the golem’s neck. It’s a strange thing, seeing what almost appears to be flesh reknitting under your touch, but you remind yourself that it’s a golem, not a human.

Finally, hours later, Sanni relaxes, taking a deep breath. You move behind her and give her shoulders a squeeze, and kiss her cheek. The lamia leans her head back and smiles, gently patting your hand, before looking at Andrew.

“I’m finished. I just need to remove the blocks I placed to keep her quiescent, and hopefully she will go back to normal.”

Andrew nods, fidgeting nervously. His girls come over to him, each one taking one of his hands, as they watch Sanni and Rina. Sanni places a finger on the golem’s forehead, and closes her eyes again. Everyone is holding their breath, and it’s so quiet you could hear a feather drop.

Rina’s eyes pop open, eyes the same startling blue as her hair. Surprising everyone, she stands up suddenly, knocking her chair over as she backs away from the table, looking panicked. Then after a moment, she seems to collect herself, and looks over at Andrew, Nina, and Amie.

And a smile spreads on the golem’s face.

You’re amazed by such an open display of emotion, and judging from the shock on Andrew’s face, so is he. In fact, the only one who doesn’t seem surprised is Sanni. Before anyone can say anything, however, Rina quickly runs to Andrew, hugging him tightly. Shock gives way to happiness as the others join in the hug.

Sanni nods. “It seems like it worked, then?”

Andrew laughs. “How? She’s never smiled before? This is…incredible!”

Sanni smiles. “She would have. I simply finished the connections that were already forming. And the runes we had Greg add will protect her mind from further magical surges.”

Rina finally releases Andrew, and turns towards Sanni. “I thank you. I feel whole. You have unlocked the prison of my mind, and I will be forever grateful.”

Andrew nods, putting an arm around Rina’s shoulders. “As will I. I’m in your debt, Sanni. And yours, Greg. If you ever need anything, all you have to do is ask.”

You shake your head. “It was our pleasure. Now, we’ll head home, and let you four celebrate.”

You put your arm around Sanni’s waist, and smile at her. “And as for you, you’ve earned a very special evening indeed…”

Everyone laughs, as you say your goodbyes.
