Chapter 71 by TheSpectator TheSpectator

What do you tell the others?

Everything. Including that she wants to meet me again.

In the hotel room, you met Amari, who was pacing in the center of the room. Her brown eyes lit up when she saw you and even smiled.

Amari let out. “You’re back. Finally!”

You pushed yourself away from Amari and got to one of the couches, and sat hard. “I told her nothing. Where’s Flora?”

Flora came out of the room looking for you. She regarded you and nodded. “I’m right here.”

“Good,” you say. “Listen, she- Summer - she knows I’m a contractor, and she suspects the two of you being something much more than you let on. I dusted our trial, but now she wants me to go to the police station and talk to her again. She has questions about some ‘outside’ news.”

Amari shoots her arms out. “You can’t go. It’s a trap.”

Flora shakes her head in disagreement. “If he doesn’t go, they’ll definitely suspect us. They might even follow us when we leave.”

Amari grimaced.

“What was that about that train yard anyway, Amari?” You ask her, and she deflates.

“Wasn’t mine — some other jackass out there sending anything via train tracks is close to suicide. Look at what happened last night for an example.” She waited for you to say something, but when you don't, she just looks at you. "Yes, Warren, there are more ARS members out in the world. I'm just one of the many."

Flora sighed. “Well then. Where is the track connected to? Perhaps we should try to confront them. Maybe this was an attempt to get you caught.”

“The tracks that lead to Billings from Bozeman are protect, but they they technically lead everywhere. No one would try to blow the lid of our operations, Flora. Don't think like that. Just some rookie doing something stupid. I'm Alexandra would do something just as dumb if she were in charge of shipments. Amari said. “I’m sure there are few of my lesser counterparts in Bozeman trying to cut into my business.”

“The group we ran into in the Heights area called me a Salesman. Any connection?” You asked.

“None at all,” Amari confirmed. “Salesmen are just…outsider traders, I guess? They talked about Salesmen like they were a rare disease. That’s the least of our worries. Let’s focus on what’s in hand.”

“The Billings Enforcers,” you mumbled. The girls made faces.

“Your call,” Amari said. “But I think you should stay out of it.”

“Or…” Flora chimed. “You go and make sure we don’t ruffle more chickens in the henhouse.”

Four eyes are on you. You scratch your head and scoff. “Gee whiz. Got anything else to give the new guy?”

What do you decide to do?
