Chapter 17 by Manbear Manbear

Who is it?

It's a woman

You can tell immediately that it is not a guard as the slight figure steps from the hallway into the room with you. As the slender figure lifts an oil lamp you can see the silhouette of the woman's jaw line and ear. In the dim light it is hard to be sure but the smoothness of her skin and the dark curls that feather her neck behind the delicate ear indicate the woman is no older than you, and she could certainly be younger.

The figure still has not noticed you standing by the polished marble table, the way she holds the lamp to light her way probably has done more to limit her vision than if she had moved through the rooms in the dim star light that filters through the open windows. No longer feeling directly threatened by the interruption you stand perfectly still as she moves silently further into the room. She is wearing a gossamer gown of white lace over a silky undergarment that hung to her knees, clothing of a well to do free woman or a favored companion, not that of a common servant or ****.

She could be a courtesan you decide as you make out the swell of her breasts and the shapely legs visible from under the lace gown, she is has the soft prettiness that so many men prefer to your harder body. But Frey gave you the impression that her lover's wife would not tolerate any competition in her household, and the tentative way the slight woman is creeping through the room suggests that she is is not supposed to be awake this late into the night. Most likely you decide, she is one of the man's daughters and not a pampered pleasure ****.

Her feet are barely covered in soft slippers and her footsteps are inaudible as she silently glides even closer to where you stand. You hold your breath as she continues on her way and just as you think that she was going to walk by you only three paces from where you are standing the young woman freezes and turns her head slowly until your eyes lock with hers. Several different emotions flitter across her face as she realizes she is not alone.

The initial confusion is replaced by guilt at being discovered and then by fear as she realizes that you are not one of the familiar members of her household. She steps awkwardly back a half pace and her bosom rises as her lungs fill as she gasps in fear and surprise. Is she going to scream? You could close the gap and try to cover her mouth, or you could try to talk to the woman and keep her from calling for help.

Act now or try talking?
