Chapter 26 by Gem Gem

Any surprises on the way?

None during the evening, in the morning however...

I dragged myself to my bedroom, got out of my clothes and let myself drop onto my bed. It didn't take long for me to fall asleep again given my early awakening and the interesting day I've had. But somehow that still didn't help me when my alarm went off. I punched it off and rose up. Slowly I walked over to the door, down the chairs and towards the kitchen. The door to the guest room was shut, Azula was probably still sound asleep. No wonder, if she had been awake for that long, or rather was programmed to have been awake for so long. But it was still much to early for such details.

I put two slices of toast in the toaster and started the coffee machine before grabbing a pack of cheese from the fridge. When both devices were finished I prepared the toasts and topped the coffee of with a bit of brandy from the cabinet and light myself a cigarette. Breakfast of the champions. After enjoying my early meal, insofar enjoying anything at this hour is possible I put the dishes in the dishwasher and made my way back to my bedroom.

"Morning."

I nearly fell over when I heard a loud voice from right next to me while walking through the corridor. Azula had just come up the stairs from the basement and now stood in the doorframe.

"Why are you not wearing anything? Get yourself dressed." She demanded while putting her hands in front of her eyes. I hurriedly continued my journey, my heart pounding like crazy from such a shock during the early morning. Why was she so mad anyways, she didn't mind yesterday. And why was she already up? And it wasn't like I wasn't wearing a pair of boxers anyway. Now I couldn't even walk around my very own house how I wanted to.

I shook my head. It was, after all, still way too early to muse over such matters. And so I went through my morning routine, luckily noticing that the shower was set to the maximum temperature before getting in. After getting into a white shirt and jeans I went back down to find my early-riser of a robo-slut. My search was cut short when I passed the guest bathroom and heard water running. So now she was taking a shower.

With nothing else to do I started up my laptop and got to work. It wasn't long before I was joined by Azula, who was in a similar getup from yesterday, she had only exchanged her shirt and, I assumed, her underwear. I was about to ask what the early rising was about, but she was faster with her questions.

"What are you doing, running around naked in the house?"

"I was getting breakfast." I answered, too perplexed to say anything else.

"Naked?" For some reason or another she was in a horrible mood. It was probably best to not antagonize her too much right now. Although I still felt that I hadn't done anything wrong.

"I didn't expect you to be awake already."

"I've been awake for two hours, practicing my firebending in the basement." Admittedly getting up that early would have put me in a horrible mood as well. I put my fear about the state of my furniture in the basement aside and answered her.

"Okay, I did not expect that. But you didn't mind yesterday." Maybe I should not have said that, I considered, but she took it surprisingly well.

"Yesterday was... different." She simply said. I gave her a questioning look. "Yesterday I was pumped full of adrenaline and in combat mode. I had no time to consider such superficialities. I would have killed you if you had made one wrong move." She sighed heavily and continued in a much more neutral voice, her anger apparently wiped away. "You were just an unknown party I had to consider. An obstacle to work around. Now I see you as..." she was struggling for words.

"Another human being?" I offered.

"I wouldn't go that far." She smirked. Just like that, her bad mood had evaporated.

"I take your ankle is better then?" I asked her, remembering her ailment from yesterday. From what I noticed she seemed to walk normally today.

"Yes, much better. That ice actually helped." Azula told me as she grabbed another book from my bookshelf and laid on the couch like she had the day before.

"Do you have a brush?" Azula asked me five minutes into the silence that followed. It took me a moment that they used brushes to write in the show and she wasn't about to paint a picture. I glanced over my monitor to see what she was up to.

"I do not believe 'The Art of War' needs any annotations." I informed her. She shrugged but returned to reading.

How does the morning proceed?
