Chapter 40 by leroy
What to wear?
Military Dress Uniform
"I don't know. Does this make my butt look big?" Katla asked, standing in front of a mirror, Avalon had a surprisingly simple dress uniform, a high necked green upper and a matching lower with gold buttons down the front and gold trim along all the creases. The reason for such simplicity, however, was because there were almost 100 different possible accessories that one could wear with it to make any fashion statement that the wearer chose. As of yet, Katla hadn't acquired any, making her life much easier.
"No Commodore. I can assure you that is not the part it emphasizes." Jacyln assured her, giving a very pointed look at her Commodore's chest. It was clear that whoever had measured it had gotten the size slightly off, Katla could feel the press of the fabric against her breasts, not chokingly so but enough to emphasize them nicely. Jaclyn herself was wearing a clearly militant in style suit with a white top and black pants, a gold chord on her left shoulder ending with a pin in the shape of a flower. Likely her house symbol or something like that.
"I thank you for your for your integrity young ensign." Katla turned away from the mirror to face her aide directly. "Speaking of, your outfit isn't some big middle finger is it?"
"No my lady, I've simply made it clear I'm unaffiliated with the function taking place. That is the meaning of the white. The black," She indicated her pants, "tells of my actual loyalties. It's a formality so that none speak to me thinking me a friend though I do have several within the Centrists." Katla had finally managed to get her to stop using the long-form faction names. In private at least.
"Will there be any thoughts on me being there with you?" Katla asked
"Nothing beyond the usual rumors," Jaclyn said waving a hand dismissively. "Those happen whenever anyone spends time with someone else." She gave a smile. "Princess Joan once spent a few months with General Nova and half the Queendom still thinks they share a daughter." Katla had noticed that when referring to princesses it was common to refer to their first names to avoid the mass confusion of just calling them all Princess Avalon.
"How did that happen?" Katla asked, General Nova was the Federation's most famed commander, responsible for leading a mutiny to evacuate an American colony right before it's star went supernova. Instead of being subject to court-martial she had instead become the only living recipient of the Colonial Medal of Honor and the Federation Star of Valor.
"Princess Joan was kidnapped by pirates en-route to a diplomatic meeting. You should ask her about it if you get the chance. She loves telling the story of how dashing and daring the rescue was." Jaclyn rolled her eyes.
"Why the doubt then? Wouldn't be the first time a hostage wanted to 'reward' their savior.." Katla asked, "Plus isn't her daughter a red-head?" The same hair color as a certain Federation hero.
"Because there is a more obvious answer than the fanciful but its impolite to say it," Jaclyn said, getting a raised eyebrow in response, Jaclyn sighed. "The pirate leader also had red hair." She finally said, leaving the implication clear. "And the Princess has so far refused to submit the matter to a paternity test. There is a bit of scandal about that. As a first-line princess, any of her children also inherit the title and rights so said full paternity is usually a matter of course." Jaclyn shrugged. "But it is her right to refuse it."
"Fair enough," Katla said with a shrug. It was not like it was in any way important or would cause any sorts of issues in the future for her or anyone else.
Jaclyn checked her watch. "We are free to depart now Commodore, the car is waiting outside."
The 'car' was, in fact, a limo and said limo had the most comfortable seats Katla had ever felt grace her behind. The smart cushion immediately molding itself to her and letting her sink in just the right amount.
"Any subjects I need to avoid when we get there?" Katla asked, wiggling just a little more out of habit than necessity. The cushions following her every move perfectly.
"There will be a great many people who seek your input about the Queendom's military strategy and tactics, some who have equated hours of reading and watching on the net for actual experience. It's best to try and remain neutral about such things. Your own victory will be of great interest to some of these parties. Especially in light of the loss at Denie-316." The battle the Directorate had won. "I would not recommend being harsh on Commodore Setra's performance. She is an Isolationist but to critique her to civilians when her performance was not egregious is simply bad manners." Setra had been the one in command. Katla had yet to actually meet the woman but by most accounts, she'd given a good fight.
"Got it," Katla said though she wasn't entirely sure she did. A Viking who lost under almost any circumstances was always going to be subject to a bit of ribbing. Saying you could do better than everyone else was practically a national pastime on Asgard. She filed it under her 'new place new rules' part of her brain.
"There will also be foreign representatives present. The less said to them the better. Even the ones who don't wish us harm will be more than happy to make use of anything they learn." Jaclyn explained.
"Well then. This should be fun." Katla said, letting a comfortable silence reign as she adjusted her uniform a bit.
