Chapter 3
by Thotar
Where do we pick up with Glynda?
Organizing the newest members of Beacon's secret huntress society
Note: This story takes place in a slight AU, most of the changes will be explained in this chapter. Let me know what you think about them!
Glynda let out a sigh as she relaxed into the comfortable leather couch adorning her office. Finally, after weeks of prep and hard work, initiation was over! The freshmen class had just finished their first week of classes. With all the paperwork filed, their place in Beacon was solidified.
The freshmen certainly made for an interesting class, if nothing else. Glynda knew she would be seeing many of them in her office for discipline in the future. Regardless of their trouble making capability, they were a class of deadly fighters, many of them hand picked by Ozpin himself.
She shook her head at the thought of her boss. Ozpin's meddling had caused her plenty of stress this semester. Out of a ~100 person class, nearly a dozen were students that Glynda would consider exceptional, in both origin and ability. Still, that exceptionalism would make them great candidates for her extracurricular activity. With her work done, Glynda finally had time to indulge in play.
People would be surprised to find out that the stern and strict headmistress of Beacon academy even had a hobby. In truth, her hobby was more akin to work, but she loved every moment of it.
Her hobby was still deeply rooted in developing the huntresses of tomorrow. Notice, only huntresses. A casual observer to the world of Remnant might notice that there was a massive gender imbalance in the hunter population. Despite men being naturally stronger, the best huntresses were far more deadly than the best huntsmen. This was not opinion. This was a fact.
There were a few reasons that this imbalance existed. In the ancient history of Remnant, men were often dedicated to fighting other nations. However, the home front wouldn't defend itself from the Grimm threat. With the men off bickering, it fell to the hands of women to defend their homes; a role they took to with pride.
After the Great War, this issue was further compounded. The available population of men had fallen drastically, even as the Grimm menace increased with the negativity brought by war.
The last reason, one which Glynda was proud to be a contributor to, was one you wouldn't find in any research paper. You see, Glynda was the head of a highly exclusive huntress society, consisting of the deadliest women Remnant had to offer, just shy of Salem herself. The huntress society she led was an elite group, with roots in every huntress academy.
The society's main mission was to be a network for the best women Remnant had to offer, so that they could work together to destroy the Grimm. Its members were sworn to secrecy about the groups existence, practices, and training.
It truly was a vast network of connections. No where else on Remnant could a bandit leader, an Atlas Specialist, Racial terrorist, and a head mistress meet in peace. Only the truly elite would ever call themselves members. It was saying something when there were only three people to ever draw blood from the Grimm Queen... Only two of which were mortal, both women, and both members— one a long-deceased founder and the other still very much alive (and retired).
The club varied in name throughout Remnant. The shadows of Atlus whispered the name Aurelius. Mistral knew it as Noìr. To Vacuo and Menagerie, it was Exalt.
Glynda's branch, the original one, was known as 'Valoress'. Sometimes, its name was abbreviated to VSS. Its acronyms had a few meanings depending on how cheeky the woman you asked was feeling.
Despite its different names, Valoress was not a regional organization. Recruiting was done at academies, but the members would immediately be **** to bond and mingle once they became fully initiated members. Building a global network was of the utmost priority for the defenders for tomorrow. Being nationalized would only disrupt that mission.
Speaking of recruiting, that was the topic that Glynda was excited to finally begin. She was waiting for her fellow alumni to arrive before she could finally show off this years candidates. She'd laid out the files of those who she considered prime candidates neatly on the table.
A knock rang from the door in a specific beat that assured Glynda her guests had arrived. With a flick of her crop, the door swung open and in walked two of the most dangerous women in Vale.
The first woman wore shades of brown across her whole form, including her hair and tanned skin. She was of medium height but a relatively petite build. With the power flowing through her veins, Amber cut a powerful figure and wore it prominently with every aspect of her posture. She exuded the confidence that one would expect from a woman capable of bending the elements to her will.
Tucked under her white hood, the woman beside her did not display her power so openly. Her powers dwelled just under the surface. The average person would completely miss it under her gentle appearance. Underestimating Summer Rose would be the last action anyone ever took. In their time in school, Glynda had seen many people fall victim to her gentle silver eyes. She'd seen even more fall victim to the Thorn she kept holstered on her lower back.
"Welcome ladies! I assume your travels went well?" Glynda said, gesturing them to sit.
"It was a pleasant trip. As nice as being retired is, its nice getting out. Tai knows how important this stuff is to me. Him and Qrow went to the bar for a guy's night. He's got nothing to complain about really. With the girls gone, we've had plenty of time to make up for lost time." Summer answered cheerfully.
"That's wonderful to hear. I'm glad you're finding so much enjoyment in your retirement. Brothers know you've earned it." Glynda said with a truly genuine smile.
"As for me, the return to Beacon went fine. I haven't had any non-sanctioned duels in months. I'd be bored without the spars you've organized for me... Probably dead too. Brothers know how rusty I'd be without some 'encouragement'. You pick your candidates yet?" Amber gave a summary of her own past few months.
"I did. I've got 8 candidates, as well as some reservists in case we disagree on one. How about I read off their files?" Glynda asked her colleagues, who nodded their consent.
"First off, we have Pyrrha Nikos. I'm assuming you know of her feats, so let's talk about her non-public abilities. Her semblance is polarity, allowing her to control metals. She's unmatched in combat within her year and displays excellent awareness. Personally, she's everything a huntress should be."
"Are you worried about her fame? If she went public with things..." Amber voiced her worry.
"From what I've seen, that won't be an issue. She's been **** to embrace her fame. In fact, getting out of the spotlight was why she chose Beacon. Ozpin made sure to drive that point home."
"Well she's certainly strong enough. Ruby has been gushing about how cool she is, as well as how kind she's been. She certainly gets my vote." Summer voiced her agreement with Glynda's pick.
"Aye." Amber agreed, and Glynda set Ms. Nikos into the acceptance pile.
"Since you've already mentioned her, would you care to tell us about your daughter, Summer?" Glynda asked, opening up the next file to show a young woman who was the spitting image of Summer.
"Of course. She's Tai and I's daughter, obviously. She fights with a Scythe. Her semblance is similar to mine; she can convert her body into rose petals, allowing her to move faster and more nimbly. Between sparring with Qrow, Tai, Yang, and I, she's very well trained. To be frank, she excels at killing Grimm. Between her weapon and her eyes, I have no doubt she'll be the greatest slayer amongst this group, even if she struggles a bit more with duels."
"How much does she know about her eyes?" Glynda asked. It was not a topic that Summer often broached.
"I've driven the point home that her eyes are special... And why they're special. Still, I'm holding off on training her on their use. I don't want her to rely on them. Also, I'm not sure she could even manifest them yet. Bonding with a team and fighting with them- Protecting them- was always my driving emotion when I used them."
"I think that was the right decision, Summer." Glynda reassured her.
"How would you gauge her personality?" Amber asked. Summer feigned being offended at Amber basically questioning her parenting.
"Excuse me? She grew up with the best mom on Remnant!" Summer said in an arrogant tone.
"Look! I'm just saying that if you were my mom, I wouldn't be a warrior, I'd be fat from all the baking you do!"
"If you _were _my daughter, I'd have taken you over my knee and spanked you until you lost the attitude!"
"Oh? Is that what you called that after our last fight?" Amber teased.
"No. That was all for pleasure. You'd best ditch the attitude if you don't want me to do it again. Glynda's desk looks excellent for bending someone over."
"That is indeed what it was built for." Glynda chimed in.
Amber and Summer had a brief playful stare down, but Amber wisely backed down.
"In all seriousness, Ruby exemplifies everything I value in a huntress. She's loyal and tough as nails. All that sparring with her older sister has done her good." Glynda gave her views on the youngest legacy child of team STRQ.
"I'm glad to hear it. Although you'd better not let Ruby hear you call her the younger sister. She's only a few months younger than Yang... And yes, that's caused just as many arguments as you'd expect." Summer said with a sigh.
"Wait, Tai had two women pregnant at the same time?" Amber asked in surprise.
"Yup. Despite his goofiness, he's quite the player when he wants to be. Raven tried her best to share him with me. It honestly worked for a while... Then she left us."
"I'm surprised that she was capable of that to be honest, with what I've heard about her." Amber admitted honestly.
"Well it certainly helped that her and I got along so well..." Summer admitted.
"To my best recollection, you were both challenging each other to fights every week. Those were some of the most humiliating forfeits I've seen from our members. Remind me, was it you who had to run a naked lap around the entirety of Amity arena mid-festival, or Raven?" Glynda asked teasingly.
Summer blushed a pretty shade of red.
"That was Raven, actually. She got her **** later though."
"Ah yes. You flushed such a pretty shade of red when Raven made you go on the awards podium wearing only your cloak!" Glynda reminded the blushing woman.
"I-It was an international broadcast!"
"Well you did make her streak the biggest spectator event of the year!" Amber reminded her.
"Only because she hung me up a flag pole using only my panties before that! I was up there for an hour, nearly completely nude! Do you know how bad that hurt?!" Summer complained.
"Well, I guess you shouldn't have lost. Besides, I sure got a kick out of your antics. At least until you two decided embarrassing your opponent was overrated..." Glynda trailed off but the implication was enough to make the silver-eyed woman blush.
"Wait, what do you mean?" Amber asked confused. She hadn't been old enough to be around when Summer, Raven, and Glynda were in Beacon.
"Well, one of them eventually broke the barrier... Figuratively and literally."
"Wait you mean—!" Amber exclaimed.
"They discovered the strap on, and then you two decided that being fucked into oblivion was much more embarrassing anyway. Hell, eventually you didn't even need the excuse of losing a fight to spread your legs for each other." Glynda teased again.
"That's it! Screw Amber! I want to fight you during the initiation fight!"
"Unfortunately, that's not your choice. I'm fighting Sienna, remember?" Amber said, not wanting to lose her upcoming fight.
"Fine. Did you two decide the stakes yet?" Summer asked, slumping back into her seat.
"We did. Loser gives the initiation speech naked during the real initiation. I'm looking forward to it."
"The match or the punishment?" Summer teased.
"As much as I love fighting such a feisty tiger, no. I'm definitely looking forward to the punishment. I can't wait to see the look on some of their faces when a terrorist leader is giving them a recruitment speech with her tits out."
"As fun as that sounds, ladies we've gotten off task. As the night is growing late, how about I speed through this list? Save your questions for the end." Glynda spoke to rally her colleagues back into the task at hand.
"Works for me." Amber said.
"Perfect. Next is Summer's other daughter, Yang. She fights with gauntlets and has a beserker-type semblance. She has raw strength in magnitude and a brutal combat style. She's a bit hot headed, but definitely loyal and fiercely protective of her family. Do you two agree, or would you rather hold off judgement?"
"Aye." Both woman spoke, meaning Yang would get the chance to join.
"I'm glad to hear that. Next off, is the rest of team RWBY. Blake Belladonna is a cat faunus from Menagerie. Her semblance allows her to place a clone, from which she can leverage momentum and take hits. Until recently, she was an agent in Sienna's white fang. She's actually here off Sienna's personal recommendation. Despite how it sounds, she has shown that she cares more about preserving life than her own well being. If we added her, she would most definitely be an asset for our more subtle operations."
"As much as I respect Sienna, let's see the rest of the class before we make a decision." Amber voiced her thoughts.
"Yang has spoke highly of her, but she seems very secretive. I agree with Amber."
"Very well. Next off is one Weiss Schnee. Yes, before you ask, she is indeed Winter's younger sister. She has the Schnee semblance and fights with a rapier. Her semblance is an excellent supportive tool. She can be a bit hard headed, but she resolved her conflict with Ms. Rose very quickly, which I would say is a point in her favor. Where do you stand?"
"Aye, as long as you don't anticipate any long term problems coming from a Schnee and a white fang member." Amber said reluctantly.
"As much as I hate to admit it, the Schnee semblance is far too valuable to pass up. Besides, this gives Ruby a chance to tan her hide when she kicks her ass in a fight! Aye." Summer spoke.
"Now for the last 3. They all come from team Crimson. To be frank, they have slightly sketchy backgrounds, but nothing outright treasonous." Glynda opened up their files, which showed the team's incredibly thorough discipline records.
"Wow! This is..." Summer started.
"I'm impressed with their creativity to say the least. None of it is criminal, but they have plenty of mischief to go around. I believe that if we directed their harmless pranks towards the enemy, it would be an excellent strategy. Cunning is not an easy skill to teach." Glynda explained her reasoning behind picking the three troublemaking teens.
"Team CMENs leader is Cinder Fall. Her semblance is the ability to super heat glass, which she can then bend into her will. Her shards create deadly weapons and projectiles. She can also form them into more traditional weapons. She was sent into the foster care program after her family's hotel burned down. Ozpin saw some potential and gave her a scholarship to Signal and then Beacon. She's deadly on the battlefield, but her mind is by far her deadliest weapon."
"Aye." Both women confirmed her. Despite the rough childhood of the woman, she had the type of tactical mind that was sorely needed in Valoress.
Glynda turned over the next file.
"Emerald Sustrai is a tricky one. She was a street rat until she was recruited by Ozpin, similarly to Cinder. Her biggest strength is far and away her semblance, which allows her to cause hallucinations in the minds of her enemies. To be very clear, we need to keep an eye out on a semblance as dangerous as hers. Emerald is not a head-to-head fighter. She placed near the bottom 30% of the Beacon class when fighting bots, which her semblance could not affect. She is ranked 7th in combat in her class right now. Take that as you will."
"That's... Aye." Summer spoke with deadly seriousness. A girl like Emerald was exactly the kind that couldn't be allowed to slip through their fingers. Even if she never picked up a sword, her semblance possessed an insane amount of utility.
"Aye." Amber also agreed.
"In a similar vein, this is Neopolitan. She comes from the deserts of Vacuo. Don't let the name fool you, she is an incredibly acrobatic fighter. She did not get hit a single time in the last combat class. Her aura is a bit weak but... Her semblance is frankly bullshit."
"Bullshit how?" Amber asked carefully.
"She can create illusions. Unlike Ms. Sustrai, these illusions are not confined to a single person's mind. Additionally, she seems to possess the ability to teleport short distances. If left freely, her illusions usually shatter like glass. However, she's also shown the ability to bind her illusions to another's aura supply, which makes them last as long as the aura source." Glynda finished her explanation.
"What kind of illusions are we talking about? How convincing are they?" Summer inquired, worried at the prospect of not being able to trust her senses around this class.
"She can completely change someone's appearance. She can also create illusionary scenes, but those appear to be static. Also... she has a bit of a mischievous side. In Vacuo, there were many incidents of female classmates who wronged her being on the wrong end of it."
"Wrong end how? It seems pretty harmless to me..." Amber asked.
"She would make them think they were getting dressed in the morning, but in actuality, they had only placed on her illusions." Glynda began to explain
"I thought you said her illusions were visible to all?" Summer asked confused.
"They are. Until Ms. Neo dropped her illusions in the middle of a school assembly. Need I say more?"
"Oh. That does seem dangerous. Well, we can't exactly let her pass us by. Aye." Amber said. Summer nodded as well.
"Looking at the other candidates, we have Pyrrha, Ruby, Yang, Weiss, Cinder, Emerald, and Neo confirmed. Blake is our only undecided one. What other options did you have?" Summer asked.
"Only one. Pyrrha's teammate, Nora Valkyrie. She has unparalled strength but... I'm hesitant. She seems to lack control, but more importantly, she has zero ability to keep a secret. Additionally, she has a life partner in Ren. There's no way she would keep us a secret to him." Glynda explained her reasoning behind avoiding the lightning-powered girl.
"That certainly sounds problematic. Looking at the rest of our confirmed candidates, Blake is looking better and better. She has experience in guerilla warfare and besides, she'll perfectly balance this class out. We have 4 front line warriors and 3 tricksters, with some overlap. Blake would make that 4 and 4, and I think that would be an incredibly interesting class. Besides, the above class was lacking in those with utility... Blake gets my vote." Summer said, partially motivated by not wanting Blake to be the only one kept away from her teams secret. Blake would absolutely be able to pry their secret out and the gaps between them would surely break them apart.
"Amber?" Glynda asked.
"I agree with Summer." She spoke without hesitation.
"It sounds like we've gotten our selections narrowed. How about we talk about initiation? Summer, do you want to take lead on this?"
"Of course. My current plan is to have 2 initiation nights. The first will just be a quick get together. We'll show what we have to offer with our planned fight, but we'll save the forfeit for the next day." Summer explained.
"On day two, we'll have the girls bring their combat gear. We'll do a simple single elimination tournament. The two fighters will name stakes before each round, and the winner of the whole thing also gets a forfeit against all the losers. It'll give them a taste early. To get them comfortable with the type of stakes we normally use, we'll have Amber explain the rules of the tournament and our club completely naked, since she's definitely going to have lost the night before." Summer couldn't resist teasing Amber.
"That sounds like a great plan, except I won't be the one naked!" Amber insisted.
"I guess we'll see. Any other topics at hand tonight?" Summer asked. Glynda shook her head.
"Awesome. It's getting far too late. Let's send those cards out and get the ball rolling!" Amber cheered.
With their meeting adjourned, the next annual class of the Beacon Secret Society had officially begun their journey!
