Bethany minds her manners

Ms. Stone decided to start the school year off with running, so that's what the girls do for the next hour of class. Tanya, Melissa, McKenzie, and Maggie all run together in a tight pack. Maggie continues to be confused but humbled by the situation. Usually, she runs by herself all the way at the back - if she runs at all. For the first time, she feels safe and protected.

Melissa uses the opportunity to tell Tanya how much she appreciates her taking a stand. She says she's noticed how Tanya's been challenging the school's status quo by "being so nice to the freaks. You're a modern Susan B. Anthony," she adds.

At one point Melissa falls back to run with Maggie. She apologizes for not talking to her and that she always admired her artwork. She explains she was always scared because of Whitney and Tanya. Adding "if you ever want tips for getting rid of that baby fat, let me know."

Again, Maggie takes what she can get.

McKenzie, meanwhile, is being uncomfortably nice to Maggie. She runs with her and gives her tips on how to have the right stride. When she gets it right, she compliments her. When Maggie's losing steam it is McKenzie who suggests they all hang back a little.

Once the class is finished and everyone is changed Maggie stops Tanya and gives her a big hug. She was feeling awful all day but now she was wondering if maybe she was changing Tanya for the best and by default some of the other girls who bullied her. She still wasn't catching on about McKenzie. "Thanks for sticking up for me today," Maggie says. "I know you have cheerleader practice after school, but I think you should come to my house for dinner. We only have five days until Anime Comic Con and should work on our costumes."

Maggie doesn't wait for a reply because she knows the answer is yes. With happy butterflies in her stomach, she rushes off to her next class. Tanya joins McKenzie in the hall. They have their last class of the day together, English Literature.

English Lit happens without any problems. Although Chad is in the class and so are a couple of cheerleaders everyone seems a little on edge and confused. There's very little interaction. Tanya and McKenzie have unknowingly upset the balance of the school.

After class, the two girls head to the locker room once again. This time to get ready for cheerleader practice. Bethany and Whitney are already there. When the two influenceable girls enter they simply greet them, say "see you on the practice field," and head outside.
