Chapter 34 by agenteightysix agenteightysix

What do you ask?

"How does this work, Master?"

You swallow the lump in your throat. You might as well ask, even if it makes you look silly. The only other option is to say you can't make the tea.

"How does the stove work, Master? I haven't seen one like this before," you ask.

"You really are new here, aren't you?" he asks in response. You nod meekly. You figure you might as well play up being naive. Much to your relief, he chuckles rather than getting stern with you. "That stove works through magic."

"Magic...?" you repeat, not understanding what he means.

"Yes, magic. Pouring your magical energy into the stove should light it, and pressing that button on the side will snuff it out." Indeed, upon closer inspection there is a small button next to each burner that you didn't notice before.

After several seconds of silence and you looking closely at the stove, you turn around with another realization. "Wait, how did you know-"

"That you can use magic?" he cuts you off with a grin on his face. He must already know where this conversation is going. "Years ago I used to be a magic scholar in the human realm. I can see the magic innate in people that possess it. I can see it in you, as well. Powerful but pure, untapped and full of potential." Your eyes go wide at this statement, shocked that he seemingly knows so much about you already.

"I was, in my old life, a renowned mage," he continues. "A mishap with a portal spell stranded me here, but I think I've done quite well for myself." To emphasize his point, he holds his hands out, gesturing to the luxury all around him. "Enough about me, though, you need to get that tea ready." He gestures towards the stove, indicating for you to continue your previous duties.

You turn back to the stove, softly rubbing your hands together to try casting a healing spell into the stove. You've never casted your spell on an inanimate object before, so you're not even fully sure what sort of effect you should expect. With a deep breath, you hold your hands out to the stove and begin casting a simple healing spell. You feel the energy slowly gathering in your palms. The stove sparks weakly in response. You try focusing harder, but still only get a disappointing reaction.

"Come now, I know you possess more impressive magic than that," Master chastises you. You know he's right, but you had hoped to be able to do this without using your more lewd magic.

How do you light it?
