Chapter 4 by Washotep Washotep

What does Yang do next?

Yang skips breakfast and heads straight outside

"That was fast..." Summer comments as Yang races towards her while she tends to the sunflowers.

"I do not have much of an appetite right now. Sorry..." Yang replies.

"Well, you can always come back to your waffles later. Right now, we need to deal with some weeds! Find me a hoe," Summer says enthusiastically.

"A what?!" Yang answers.

"A hoe... for turning soil," Summer adds.

"Oh! Right! I thought you meant uh...” Yang replies sheepishly before cutting herself off.

"What did you think I meant?" Summer says sternly.

"Nothing!" Yang squeaks awkwardly with a smile.

Summer gives Yang a long, inquisitive stare. There is a pause in their conversation, interrupted by the sound of a bumblebee flying up close to Summer's face. She swats it away haphazardly.

"Right... you know what. I'll get the tools and I'll have a conversation with daddy while I'm at it. Okay?" Summer says.

"Yes mom," Yang answers, knowing that she has probably landed Taiying in hot water based on his colourful language.

Wouldn't be the first time Yang has learned an unsavoury word from him. Yang takes a moment to look closely after the sunflower patch before her. Summer returns with two hoes in nearly an instant after Yang turns away from her.

Summer lays out instructions on how she expects Yang to till the field by herself since she's a big girl now. It is a decent refresher since Yang forgot a lot about farming in her year away at Beacon academy.

The sun’s heat is unforgiving. Yang works up a sweat pounding her hoe into the ground but soon her focus begins to slip. She looked around to see Summer working the ground a short distance away.

There was such a grace about her, even while performing hard labour. The joy in which she did it. The efficiency of her work. Even the clothes she wore while turning the soil never failed to capture her beauty whilst remaining practical in the field. Yang couldn't take her eyes off her.

Summer glanced back at her with a toothy grin. In a flash, memories of milking cows, feeding the birds, plucking the fruits and sharing dinners rushed into Yang’s mind. It’s no surprise why Taiying fell for Summer. She filled everyone's hearts with joy. Yang's memories fade away as quickly as they came, leaving Yang standing with Summer’s arms wrapped around in a warm embrace.

"Wonderful! My big girl finished turning the soil all by herself!” Summer cheers.

“I did? I hardly finished,” Yang replies, dazed by Summer’s affection.

“Don’t be silly! I didn’t expect you to work the whole farm by yourself. You have done more than enough for today!” Summer cheers.

Summer’s praise comes across as bittersweet. Yang knows that tilling even a small portion of the farm’s soil would have been difficult for her as a child. Yang was expected to work at least a quarter of the garden or more (depending on if Ruby could pull her own weight) ever since she became a teenager. This perfect memory of Summer has no idea what hardships Yang has been through since she passed away.

“You definitely smell you have done a lot of work today. Let’s have a bubble bath together!" Summer suggests as she pulls away from Yang.

"Together?! Why together?"

“Because you deserve it! Unless... you don’t want me to wash your hair like I used to?” Summer remarks.

“No!” Yang exclaims.

Yang fears that she may have unintentionally come across like she was pushing Summer away. Yang loved to bubble bath with Summer and still wished she would wash her hair. Getting through all her knots was a nightmare while growing up. In fact, it still is a nightmare! Only now Yang could manage her golden locks on her own. No amount of independence would change every girl’s desire to be pampered occasionally.

Yet, the thought of sharing a bathtub with Summer felt... inappropriate? Too intimate? Uncomfortable? Yang couldn’t find the right word to describe her feeling that sharing a bathtub was a bad idea. But she couldn't justify her feelings. They’ve been naked around each other before, why would it be a problem now?

Summer was family to her- there should not be a problem with Yang bathing her, yet there is. And Summer could see Yang’s unease plastered across her face.

“Are you sure that you want to have a bubble bath with me? It’s okay if you don’t. You’re a big girl now. I know you can take care of yourself,” Summer remarks.

Does Yang bathe alone or with Summer?
