Unexpected living arrangement

Immediately you hear voices and you look around. The lights are on despite it being so late and there are 3 guys sitting around a table playing poker. The guys are all around your age and it's possible that 1 of them is Kelly's boyfriend Tom, although you don't know which 1. The room smells of cigars and there are beer cans and whiskey bottles on the table. This is not what you had expected to find. Still invisible, you quietly check out the apartment and you find that there are 3 bedrooms. Maybe this is just Kelly's boyfriend's place? No, she mentioned that they had moved in together recently.

You return to the living room where the 3 guys are and you starting to think that you might have the wrong place, when the front door opens and in walks Kelly in a black dress. She looks surprised to see the guys. "Oh, you're all still up," she says as she enters the apartment.

"Hey babe. Yeah, we ended up playing poker. Mark's down 80 bucks and Devin's riding a hot hand right now. I'm only down a little," one of the guys says. He must be Tom. Kelly goes over to him and kisses him on the lips and starts to walk away, but he wraps his hand around her waist and pulls her onto his lap. The 3 guys are all about 6 feet tall and medium builds and dressed the same in t-shirts. Tom and Mark are wearing jeans while Devin has shorts on.

"Where have you been all night, Kels? You seeing some other guy?" Devin jokes, placing his bet.

"I was chasing down a lead on a story I'm working on," Kelly responds, ignoring the joke.

"Anything interesting? What's it about?" Mark asks, folding.

"Maybe... I have to do more research first. If I get it right, I might have a shot of getting published in the Tribune, there's this guy from college I know that's working on the same story, so we might be able to collaborate. Fingers crossed!" Kelly says, sounding optimistic.

"Oh good! Maybe you'll start making some money and start chipping in around here, huh?" Devin remarks casually.

"Hey, cool it dude," Tom says, defending his girlfriend. "You guys said it was cool for her to stay for as long as she wants." Devin shrugs and exchanges a knowing look with Mark. You're starting to understand what's going on now. When Kelly told you she had just moved in with her boyfriend, you had assumed they had gotten their own place together. Instead, because she has no job and writes a blog, she probably had to move in with her boyfriend who's living with 2 roommates already.
