Pretty disappointing

You don't really know what you were expecting, but it was definitely better than what is in front of your eyes.

There is a small reception desk on your right, barely big enough for 1 person. Straight ahead, there is a long corridor which, apart from a water dispenser and 2 vending machines, leads to basically nowhere, while on the left there are only two lifts.

"Told ya", Gabrielle says as she notices the look of disappointment on your face.

"What's down that long corridor?", you ask her, still hoping there would be a common area or something as you turn the corner.

"Well, there are the staircases, which are very useful since the lifts take ages to come, a restroom, and....an emergency exit which set off an alarm as soon as you open it."

"Seems like i won't be spending much time here then. And also, the lifts might be an issue since I'm on the 14th floor..."

"Aww, you may have it worse than me then."

"Anyway, let's go ask for my keys and get it over with. At least I won't have any high expectations for my room anymore", you say, trying to lighten the mood a bit as you make your way to the reception.

There, a blonde girl greets you with a warm smile: "Hi! Are you guys moving in?"

"No, I already got my keys, I'm just helping him."

"Okay then, what's your room number?", the receptionist asks you.

"1408", you reply.

She types something quickly on her computer and then says: "Your room mate has already moved in, so you must be John. Do you have any piece of ID on you?"

You nod as you hand her your student card. After checking it, she returns it to you with your keys and a small bag filled with some freebies. She wishes you a good year in your new residence.

You thank her and make your way towards the lifts. As Gabrielle warned you, it takes a good minute before one of them arrives.

"That was quick!", your friend says. You can't really tell if she was sarcastic or not, and it does not fill you with confidence. You dismiss her comment and enter the lift, pressing the number 14.

Just as the door starts to close, you hear someone shout outside: "Wait!"
