“I just can’t go outside like this,” Christina said. “I’ll stay in one of these stalls.”
“Okay, if you think that’s best. If anything happens though, go straight to the dumpsters. I’ll stop by there really quick first in case you have to move, then I’ll come up here, okay?”
Christina nodded. Her friend squeezed her shoulder as a comforting measure then stepped out the restroom door, disappearing into the hallway. Christina stepped into the nearest stall and locked the door behind her before taking a seat on the toilet.
Her mind wandered as she waited for her friend, fidgeting with her hands nervously. She knew it would likely take Sara 20 or 30 minutes to get to her house and back here, and that would feel like a very long time without anything to occupy her mind. But she also knew she had no other options than to wait.
After several minutes she heard voices in the hall coming towards her general direction. She silently prayed that whoever was outside would pass by and not come into the bathroom.
A slight creak sounded as the heavy wooden door was pushed open. Christina lifted her legs so her bare feet couldn’t be seen under the stall door. Chatter filled the room and she guessed that there were three girls now in the bathroom. Christina felt herself start to tremble in nervousness and fear, and hoped against hope that they would simply come in, do what they needed to do and leave without incident. There were four stalls, if she was right and three other teens were just outside of her stall then they could each have a toilet to themselves.
The door to her stall jiggled slightly, then a hair harder. Christina pressed a hand against her mouth, trying to stay silent.
“Is there someone in there?” a female voice came through.
A fresh panic set in and Christina caught herself lost for words. Her mind seemed to stumble in her head as she tried to think of an answer.
