Chapter 2 by hexall hexall

Who are you?

[Notes on the world]

Sizes in gulliverian units of measurements:

  1. Lilliputians: 12-15 cm | 5-6 in
  2. Gulliverians: 150-180 cm | 5-6 ft
  3. Brobdingnagians: 19-21 m | 65-70 ft

Demographics:

While a significant part of each race's population is still today concentrated in the three original continents (Lilliput, Gulliveria, and Brobdignag), all three races are present in every continent, with different densities. Generally speaking brobdingnagians like to live in the colder regions of the world, away from the equator, gulliverians occupy most of the temperate regions, and lilliputians instead live mostly in the hotter regions. There are about 12 billions lilliputians in the world, around 1 billion gulliverians, and 80 million brobdingnagians. Growth trends instead are a mirror of the absolute numbers: Lilliputian population growth is very low, just above replacement numbers, gulliverians are on a slow but steady growth, while brobdignagians are growing their numbers at a fast pace. This is mostly the result of the spreading of medical and agricultural technology from Lilliput to the rest of the world.

Biology:

All three races can breed without issues (at least on the biological side). If the parents do not share the same size, the child will generally (but not always) have the size of the same sex parent. Children belonging to bigger races born from mothers of smaller races are born small and quickly grow to their proper size during the first few years of life.

Lilliputians:

A lilliputian is around 12-15 cm (5-6 in) tall and weighs 30-40 g (1.2-1.4 oz). To them, an average gulliverian looks around 19-21 m (65-70 ft) tall, a lilliputian Hollywood sign would be as tall as their belly button; an average brobdingnagian looks around 235 m (775 ft) tall, a lilliputian statue of liberty would not even reach their knees (or halfway up their thighs, if you include the base and pedestal).

Lilliputians have been, historically, the race that suffered the most. Early in history, they were seen as little more than vermin; lilliputians were **** to live underground, hidden away from their bigger cousins. Since the beginning, they have always been the most technologically adept race; in the modern world, they are far more advanced than the giants, with a booming robotics industry, advancements in genetic therapy and AIs, quantum computing, fusion energy, and a small, permanent moon colony.

While they are not the wealthiest race, they easily possess the highest standard of living of all three, and have also the most progressive and horizontal society, with little (non-size related) discrimination, and a high degree of democratic control over governments and the economy. Their naturally shorter lifespan (around 60 years) can easily be extended by decades with their technology.

The modern lilliputian military is more than a match for the other races. With space-and-air superiority, no target is safe, and their biochemical weapons can easily (and harmlessly) deal with any unruly giant that decides to venture into their lands, thinking them easy prey.

Gulliverians:

Gulliverians are on average 150-180 cm (5-6 ft) tall. To them, the average lilliputian looks a little shorter than the length of a dollar bill, a pen, or a smartphone. The average brobdingnagian instead looks as big to gulliverians as gulliverians look to lilliputians, so around 19-21 m (65-70 ft) tall, the length of a double bus or a bowling lane.

Gulliverians, being the "middle" race, always had a protagonist role in the world, as explorers, mediators, pioneers, and diplomats. They are also the richest race of the three, with vast territorial possessions, and great influence over the financial markets; the average quality of life, however, is lower than lilliput's own, due to their technology not being as advanced. As the saying goes, Lemuel City was designed by lilliputians, built by brobdingnagians, and paid for by gulliverians.

Socially and technologically, they are the most similar to our world's humans. With the equivalent technology of early 21st century Earth, and a society where discrimination and authoritarianism are still present and alive, although much weaker than just a century prior. Their cultural imprint can be felt in all corners of the Earth, from the most isolated and backward brobdingnagian village, to the lilliputian moon colony; it is hard to overstate how much they have culturally shaped the world (it is by no chance, after all, that the first mixed-sized city is named after a gulliverian). Their average lifespan is 80 years.

Brobdingnagians:

Brobdingnagians are on average around 19-21 m (65-70 ft) tall. To them, gulliverians are as small as lilliputians are to gulliverians, so around 12-15 cm (5-6 in). The average lilliputian instead appears to them to be 12 mm (0.5 in) tall, small enough to lie at full length on a fingernail. While unassisted lilliputian-gulliverian and gulliverian-brobdingnagian communication is possible, unassisted lilliputian-brobdingnagian communication is not: A brobdingnagian speaking to a lilliputian would sound like a thunderstorm of booming sounds for the smaller partner, and a nearly inaudible squeak for the bigger partner. Before the technology to solve this issue was available, a gulliverian mediator was necessary.

Brobdingnagians have always been in control of their destiny in history, at least until modern times. In antiquity, they dominated the world without question or fear, enslaving gulliverians and squashing lilliputians as it was nothing. As the power imbalance between the races narrowed, however, due to the technological advantage accumulated by their smaller cousins, they learned to accept the smaller humans as... well, humans. Technologically, they are still decades if not more behind their smaller cousins, although that gap is closing thanks to the newfound peace and cooperation of the modern world.

Despite their overwhelming size and power, brobdingnagians are the poorest race, with the lowest standard of living, mostly due to their static and traditionalist social structure, . Their society is still "old," dominated by kings and empires, in a world where direct democracy is becoming a concrete possibility, if not a reality, for lilliputians. Their society is fairly stratified, with not much upward mobility, or freedom of expression. Their naturally longer lifespan (120 years), is partially to blame for this backwardness.

With that said, the rapid development in the last few decades, due to the smaller races sharing their technology with them, shook and is shaking their social foundations to the core, putting Brobdignag in a strange position of colonizer turned colonized. Right now, there are is a lot of social tension within brobdignagian society; there is a strong sense of guilt permeating it, due to the newer generations, that grew up mostly at peace with the smaller races, having to face their history, filled with the horrors their ancestors inflicted upon the smaller races. But there are also growing revanchist movements, that see the rise of the gulliverians (and even more of the lilliputians) as an existential threat for them.
