“This time, no riddles, and no prophecy. It’s time you know everything.”
A future revealed
You raise an eyebrow at Bast. “Everything? And no cryptic crap?”
Bast nods. “What happened in the undead kingdom has convinced me. I cannot protect this land anymore. That corruption, as I said, it comes from elsewhere. Beyond the seas. This land is isolated, safe, but occasionally outside influences encroach. If it’s mortal, it’s not a threat, but some of the gods that reside in those lands are unwell.”
You nod. “You’re saying that this ‘world’ is just an island, within a larger world.”
Bast smiles. “Separated by a dangerous ocean, yes. But it’s only a matter of time before the curious find this land. However, now, everyone is united under one banner. Yours. And you can protect this land in a way I cannot anymore.”
He sighs. “I grow weak and weary. And as you know, I’ve already been grooming you to take my place. What you didn’t know is that much of your family will ascend with you.”
You blink in surprise. “You mean…”
Bast nods. “Consider it both a favor, and a safety feature. I know they help keep you on the right path, and it will be important to have that as time goes on. The old saying of power corrupts is absolutely true.”
You take a deep breath. “I assume there’s more to know than that. It seems like there are responsibilities to go along with the power.”
Bast smiles. “It’s good that you’re smarter than you look. Yes, of course, but now is not when we explain that. I need a week to gather myself, and I will explain all of that then, with your family. For now, I just want you to understand that you will be the protector of this land.”
You smile. “I’m in that role already.”
He nods. “Indeed you are. This will simply make it official. And for all time. You need to understand, once this is done, you will be bound to this land. You cannot leave, ever again.”
Smiling, he continues. “But I do not think that will be a problem. However, it brings me back to what I wanted to talk about. I have traced the corruption, and eradicated the source in this land. But across the sea is more. An expedition will be necessary someday, if for no other reason than to keep aware of what’s happening.”
You nod. “It seems dangerous.”
Bast sighs. “It is, but not insurmountable. And despite what I said, here’s a prophecy for you, though spoken plainly. It will be one of your children that makes the voyage. I do not know which. But many of them will become explorers and adventurers. It runs in the family, it seems.”
You chuckle. “I’m not surprised. No one wants to live with their parents forever.”
Bast smiles. “Regardless, one will travel beyond the sea. I don’t know what will happen there, but I imagine it will be quite the tale.”
You nod. “I’m sure. I appreciate the plain speech, as well.”
He chuckles. “Well, you’re going to hate this last bit then. I must leave to prepare. I will see you in a week. Enjoy your day tomorrow, it’s a big day.”
As you’re about to ask what he means, Bast grins and vanishes. You roll your eyes.
