Chapter 14 by Friedman Friedman

Preperations

Corvus watched the Black Daggers practice their **** for the umpteenth time. They were getting the **** down to a sweet science, and they needed too. They'd be playing a millisecond game of chess where the loser dies. One wrong step or one sloppy trigger pull may be your last. Then again, Ismak's men knew this all too well. They'd lost comrades to the very game they were playing, and deep down, they knew that it was unlikely they'd all go home after this is all said and done.

Heren stepped into a room, which was a step past her previous few run-throughs. She'd spent seconds standing in doorways, the focus point for any armed defender, but now she was comfortable stepping through the threshold and storming rooms. The plan was to keep her in the back, but if things didn't go to plan, she'd have to put her foot forward.

After another run-through, she found herself taking a break. She could tell that the Black Daggers didn't exactly trust her, but she didn't blame them. They'd spent their lives fighting at each other's side whereas they'd barely know her for a day. Still, she hoped that she was proving her worth. Even if she wasn't the best shot among the conspirators, she had other skills, such as those behind the computer. Those included adapting the footage gathered by Bravi's men from a Spyderbot drone they'd managed to smuggle into the tower.

Whilst she looked over the footage, Ismek approached her and asked "You okay?"

"Yeah. I'm fine. Thanks." Heren said.

"You're doing good. Better than I expected."

"Thanks. I'd hate to slow anyone down."

"Of course, and to be fair I struggle enough with my wrist computer. None of us can work your sort of magic."

Heren flashed a smile. "Hopefully that'll give you guys the edge when this all goes down."

Ismak nodded as Corvis joined the two and said "Your men seem well prepared, Ismak."

"Well as you'd know, being unprepared means **** in our world."

Corvis nodded in agreement. "Of course."

"So what do you make of the plan?"

"Well, it has its risks. We'll have to hit them hard and fast to catch them off guard, but so long we can get Heren to a computer, we'll have a chance."

"So once we do that, we'll have to take out the King and the Princess," Heren stated.

"Colonel Bravi says his men can take out the Princess if we strike at night." Ismak said.

"How so?"

"Well, in his words, she's gotten friendly with his men."

Corvis smirked as Heren held her tongue. Every year she spent in the military she had men looking at her like a piece of meat.

"Then all we'll have to do is take out the King." Ismak said.

"The faster we move, the better our odds are of catching him off guard." Corvis stated.

Ismak looked to Heren, and then the blueprint. "So where do you think the King will make his last stand?"

"It depends on a lot of things. Ideally, I'll be able to activate the sentry guns and keep him pinned in the Royal Chambers. If he is somehow able to escape, I assume he'll head for either the Bunker at the bottom, or the Royal Vault, which is about 15-20 stories above."

"Well we can put some portable sentry guns in the bunker to cover us." Corvis said.

"Don't forget to leave some to cover me." Heren interjects.

"Of course Heren." Ismak said, before looking to Corvis. "How far will we have to travel between the War Room and the Royal Chambers?"

"About 50, so about half of the tower."

"That's a lot of distance to cover. Tactically, elevators are a deathtrap, but stairs will be too slow."

Heren nodded. "That's why we're hoping we can keep him locked down in the Royal Chambers. Plus, I should be able to lock the elevators so only we can access them. Maybe we can use that to our advantage."

"Of course."

"And what about the Queen? We need to keep her safe." Corivs said.

"That's going to be on the assaulters. I'll make sure the sentry guns don't target her."

"You better." Corvis jabbed a finger at Heren's chest.

"She will. She's risking as much as any of us are." Ismak said.

Corvis simply nodded, before saying "Let's run some more drills."

As he got ready to practice the **** once more, it began to sink in. He was possibly hours away from changing his life for the better or the worse. All that was left to do was to sharpen his skills and perfect his plan as much as possible to make sure it'd be the former rather than the latter.
