Chapter 15 by Friedman Friedman

Check Up

Jol tinkered with a Pneumatic Baton before he felt his wrist computer vibrate, reminding him of his appointment with Tamari. Whilst he didn't really feel he needed a check-up, he sure as hell would prefer to be with Tamari than to be stuck in the armory. He headed towards an elevator which to his surprise, opened up to reveal Brigader Hote, who turned to Colonel Bravi. "I'm afraid I'll have to bid you good day. Guests aren't allowed here."

Bravi nodded. "I understand."

Hote gave Jol a nod who paused, realizing that Bravi had been allowed on the floor before. Not that it was his decision. He joined the foreign officer in the elevator, giving him a nod before the doors closed. As the elevator went down Bravi said "Greetings, going down?"

"Uh, yeah." Jol pressed the button for the medical facilities. "Are you enjoying your stay?"

"I am indeed. You're people are most hospitable."

Jol remained silent as Bravi checked his wrist-mounted computer. Jol attempted to glance at the screen but was unable to get a good look at whatever Bravi was doing. Eventually, the elevator arrived at Jol's stop, so he left for Tamari's office. There, he found the doctor sitting at her computer. She perked up upon seeing her patient, saying "Hello Jol."

"Hey."

"Why don't you take a seat?"

Jol did just that, before asking "So is this just a check up?"

"Pretty much. How are you feeling?"

"Fine."

"Sleeping well?"

"Yeah, and I haven't touched those pills either."

"That's excellent to hear. So you won't be needing anymore?"

"No."

"Great. So how are you?"

"I guess I can't complain."

"I'm all ears if you want to."

"I'm fine, seriously."

"Are you sure? I heard about this morning with you in the gym."

"Just a... just a workout. That's all."

"Jani was concerned that you might overworking yourself. You know if you injure yourself like that people are going to think you're reckless."

Jol remained silent as Jani sat next to him and put a hand on his shoulder.

"You know you have nothing to prove, Jol." Tamari said.

"I... I know."

His hand rested on her thigh, if only for a second before he realized what he'd done.

"I'd better get going. Unless there's anything else?"

"No no. That's all Jol. Have a nice day."

"I will."

Jol left, thankful Jani didn't bring up his wandering hand. It's not that he didn't want her. She'd been one of the few things holding him together throughout all his turmoil. All he knew was that if their relationship went beyond professional, he'd find himself stuck laboring in the armory for the rest of his life, without the faint glimmer of hope he was still clinging on to.
