Preparations for Homecoming and and Renewed Friendship

It was Wednesday before all of the girls on the cheer squad had their dates lined up. They were now talking about this in the locker room after their practice. The girls were all in various states of dress after they got out of the showers. Some of them were walking around with nothing on, some of them were in towels, and the rest were already in their underwear.

“Yeah Sharon. I have known Zack for most of my life and he was one of my best friends when we were younger.” Ashley said.

“Whatever. You two can be friends with losers if you want. Just leave me out of it.” Sharon said as she went to get dressed.

“So, who are you going to the dance with Tanya?” Ashley asked.

“Trent asked me if I wanted to go. I said yes.” Tanya said.

“Good. He is a good guy. What about you Paris?” Heather asked.

“I asked Gavin to go with me. He talks all of this game about wanting to fuck and all. Let’s see how that turns out.” Paris said with a shrug.

“Another one of you going out with a geek. What the hell is wrong with you?” Sharon said, shaking her head.

“Stop being a bitch Sharon. Who are you going with anyway?” Heather asked.

“I am going with Russell. He asked me the other day. Now that is a man.” Sharon said and all of the other girls rolled their eyes because Sharon was still trying to belittle some of the girls' dates.

“What about Valerie and Amber?” Tanya asked.

“I am going with Scott. Tanya told me to ask him and he is so cute. Someone said they think he might have a crush on me too.” Amber said.

“I am going with Duncan. He is pretty cool and he is cute. I like the fact that he is running for class president as well.” Valerie said.

“You and Duncan. I can’t see it.” Heather said with her regular attitude toward the girl since she didn’t really like her since her dad was trying to date Heather’s mom.

Valerie just rolled her eyes and went back to getting ready to leave. Soon it was only Heather and Ashley left in the locker room, so as they were getting ready, Ashley turned to Heather and asked, “So, you and Zack? I am happy for you.”

“Thanks. So, what is going on with you and Brandon?” Heather asked.

“Nothing. We are just friends. I am not really into a relationship right now.” Ashley said.

“Or maybe you are into someone who is not available and you don’t want to waste your time with someone else.” Heather said knowingly as she rubbed her friend's shoulder.

“I don’t know if I would say that I am into anyone right now. I just am kind of jealous that you have Zack all to yourself. We used to be such good friends and we kind of fell apart, but I would like to work on that, but I don’t want to get in the way of you two.” Ashley said.

“Don’t be ridiculous. You can hang out with him whenever you want to. Hey, I have an idea. Why don’t I set something up for the two of you tonight. I know he doesn’t have any plans.” Heather said as she was now sitting right beside her friend and bumped her shoulder.

“I would like that. Thanks. You don’t mind, do you?” Ashley asked.

“Of course not. I would be fine with you and Zack getting close again.” Heather said, even though she had other things in mind.

That would take a bit of time though. Ashley didn’t even know that she had feelings for Zack yet, so she couldn’t push this. She would just be there for her friends until she was ready to admit her subconscious feelings.

“I will call him now and set it up. Is his uncle’s coffee shop okay?” Heather asked.

“That’s perfect. Thanks again.” Ashley said, smiling at her friend and then pulling her into a hug.

“I will make the call right now. I will tell him to be there at six.” Heather said and Ashley nodded as the two of them started getting dressed so that they could get out of the locker room and head home.

That evening at six, Zack was getting out of his car at his uncle’s coffee shop and he could see that Ashley was already there and sitting in a booth waiting for him. He walked into the shop and walked up to the counter to order his drink and then made his way over to his friend who was already standing up and waiting for a hug. “So, I would like to apologize for not being the best friend of the last few years. We used to be good friends and I am hoping that we can get there again.” Ashley said.

“It’s okay. I could have tried harder too. As long as we are cool now, that is all that matters.” Zack said.

“I am so glad that we are going to try and be friends again. I have missed you so much.” Ashley said with a bright smile.

“I have missed you two. We need to do this at least once a week if not more. We can have fun like we used to when we were younger.” Zack said with an equally bright smile.

“I would love that. Should we set that up now?” Ashley asked.

“Yeah. Let’s meet up every Wednesday. I am sure Heather will be fine with that.” Zack said.

“She is. I told her that I wanted to get to be better friends with you again. This was her idea. I know she won’t have a problem with it.” Ashley said.

“Good. I look forward to it.” Zack said as his uncle brought his drink out to him.

“So, who are you going to homecoming with?” Zack asked Ashley.

“I am going with Brandon.” Ashley said.

“You two would be good together. Is this just as friends or something more?” Zack asked.

“Just as friends. I am not really ready for a relationship right now. Maybe something will happen soon that will change that though.” Ashley said.

“I hope so. You deserve to be happy.” Zack said and that brought the smile back to Ashley’s face.

“So, I told you that Heather was into you. Looks like you took my advice and took advantage of that.” Ashley said.

“I did and so far it has been good. I hope it stays that way.” Zack said.

“I am sure that it will. Just give her time. She has never really been in a relationship, so be patient with her. She will get used to it.” Ashley said.

“Yeah, she was kind of hot and heavy at first, but she has cooled down a little bit. She is not as flirty as she was at first. Which is a good thing. I like her better when she is not pushing herself on me.” Zack said.

“She is smart enough to realize that. She is a good girl at heart. People see her in the wrong light sometimes, because of who her dad is and because she has money. If you look past all of that, she is just like the rest of us.” Ashley said.

“Yeah, I have seen that for years now. I don’t know how we became friends, but it allowed me to see that she is a good person and that she would do anything for her friends.” Zack said.

“She would. So, onto other subjects. What do you think of being part of the homecoming court?” Ashley asked.

“I know you and Heather lined that up. I took someone’s spot who deserved it more. I just hope I don’t end up winning. I don’t want to take that away from the other three guys.” Zack said.

“We didn’t do that much. You might have gotten a bit of help from us, but you made it on the court fair and square. We are not doing anything so that you can win. If that happens, it is all on you.” Ashley said.

“Thanks. That makes me feel a bit better. So, how do you feel about being on the court?” Zack asked.

“I mean over the years I have gotten used to the attention. I still don’t like it all that much though. I guess I am like you. I know I shouldn’t win it and I hope that one of the others win more than me.” Ashley said.

“That sounds like you. So, are you going to the after party?” Zack asked.

“Yeah I am. It should be fun. Hopefully we can hang out for a while there.” Ashley said.

“That shouldn’t be a problem. You know Heather though. She might drag me away to some room before the night is over.” Zack said since he knew that was what was going to happen.

“I know she will. It is who she is. She will rock your world I am sure.” Ashley said.

“I just hope that if that does happen, I don’t disappoint her.” Zack said with a bit of apprehension in his voice.

“You will be fine. Just don’t worry too much.” Ashley said and Zack nodded.

“So, how has the cheer squad been so far this year?” Zack asked, changing the subject.

“It has been a lot of fun. Some of the colleges have been looking at giving me a scholarship.” Ashley said.

“That’s great. I wish you luck on that. You deserve it.” Zack said.

“Thanks Zack. I hope it works out too. I hear some of the colleges are looking at Brandon for basketball as well.” Ashley said.

“Yeah they are. It looks like he could get a scholarship to anywhere that he wants to go.” Zack said.

“Good for him. I am happy for him. What about you? Are you looking into any scholarships?” Ashley asked.

“I have signed up for a few, but I won’t hear anything back for a while. You know, they like to wait until the end of the school year to let you know anything.” Zack said.

“Yeah. I remember that with Hannah. She ended up getting some though.” Ashley said.

“Yeah, it was the same with Taylor. She got quite a few of them and it really helped my parents out when it came to paying for college.” Zack said.

Ashley looked down at her watch and saw that they had been at the coffee shop for longer than either of them had thought. It made her happy that the two of them were able to get back to talking to each other and pass the time like they used to. She looked up at him and smiled.

“Did you know we had been here for two hours?” Ashley asked.

“No, I didn’t realize that. I guess we still know how to have fun together. That’s good.” Zack said with a smile.

“Yeah it is. I am so happy that we did this. It was just like old times.” Ashley said.

“Yeah it was. So, I think both of us need to get home. It’s getting near my curfew.” Zack said.

“Mine too.” Ashley said as she stood up at the same time that Zack did.

They both hugged each other again and then started to walk outside.

“Thanks for the fun night Zack. I am looking forward to doing it again next week.” Ashley said.

“Me too.” Zack said as he walked her to her car and opened the door for her before walking over to his own car and getting in and they both drove off.

On the way home Ashley was thinking about the night and she realized something. She had always thought that Zack was hot, but after talking to him for this whole time tonight, she realized that she had a lot in common with him and she was wondering if there was a way for them to be more than friends.

Zack was having similar thoughts as he rode to his house. He had always thought that Ashley was hot and now that they were trying to be friends again he could see that they were a lot alike. Maybe Heather would let him and Ashley do things together like she was letting him and Chloe do them. That could wait though. He would wait and see how things went next week before he brought anything up to his girlfriends about it. Afterall, he had time for all of that later. Now he had to get things ready for this weekend.
