Predestined Meeting Part 2

The last rays of the sun dipped below the horizon as we approached the outskirts of the city of Avernus. I clung tightly to the back of my monstrous eagle, seeing the massive city in the distance. The outskirts of Avernus sprawled across a harsh, rocky desert landscape. The city itself stood in stark contrast to its surroundings, nestled on a wide expanse of land split by a vast river that cut through the middle of the city. Jagged cliffs and barren hills stretched out in every direction, their shadows lengthening under the fading sun. The dry, oppressive air carried the scent of sand and stone, and the light wind howled softly across the barren plains. Despite the inhospitable surroundings, Avernus thrived, an oasis of life.

"I had heard that the city of Avernus was the second largest after the capital, but I did not imagine it was that big," Namy, who was to my left, spoke, "Even so, the capital is much bigger."

From the air, the city of Avernus looked truly immense. Its sheer size reminded me of Riledo—perhaps it was even comparable. I couldn't help but wonder how the demon capital, which Namy insists is even more massive, could possibly surpass this. If what she says is true, then the scale of that city must be beyond anything I've ever imagined.

"Hey, let's descend behind those rocks," Usofra chimed in, "It is not a good idea to enter when it is still daylight."

We carefully descended behind a cluster of large rocks, seeking shelter from prying eyes.

"Once night falls completely, we'll fly into the city undetected," Usofra spoke, "We'll avoid the checkpoints, but we must remain vigilant. Avernus will not be forgiving to intruders."

After waiting for a couple of hours, midnight finally arrived, and with that, our opportunity to infiltrate the city. It was time to make our move.

"Alright, let's go," I said. With a command of my hand, I made the eagle come to me later to mount it again, with Namy and Usofra not far behind.

Together, we soared through the night sky, our bodies casting eerie shadows on the ground below as we flew undetected over Avernus' walls. The city's menacing yet strangely beautiful architecture stretched out beneath us, illuminated by flickering torchlight.

"Look for a secluded alley," I called out to Namy and Usofra, my voice barely audible above the wind, "We don't want to attract any unwanted attention."

"Over there," Usofra pointed, her finger directing us towards a narrow passage between two buildings. We descended cautiously, making sure there was no one around.

Once we saw that we had managed to enter the city without being seen, I made the eagle leave the city to wait for me in the surrounding area so that it would be ready when the time came to leave.

"Let's search for an Inn," Namy suggested, her eyes scanning the surrounding area, "We'll need to resupply and gather our strength for tomorrow."

"Agreed," Usofra nodded.

Together, we ventured deeper into the heart of the city, doing our best to remain unnoticed, keeping our faces hidden beneath our cloaks. Even at this late hour, the city seemed alive, buzzing with activity. It's a shame I couldn't take the time to explore—there were so many intriguing sights and countless corners of the city I wanted to discover. But for now, all I could do was catch fleeting glimpses of its vibrant streets as we pressed forward, staying focused on our mission.

After some searching, we found a modest-looking Inn tucked away in a shadowy corner. The sign creaked gently in the wind, its faded paint hinting at better days long past. We entered, trying to look inconspicuous among the few patrons scattered throughout the dimly lit common room. The innkeeper, a grizzled-looking demon with a single horn protruding from his forehead, eyed us warily but said nothing as we requested a room for the night.

"Rest well," He grumbled as he handed over the key, his suspicious gaze lingering on us as we made our way up the creaking stairs.

"Finally," I sighed with relief as we closed the door behind us and settled into our temporary room.

"I'm exhausted!" Namy said, collapsing on one of the two beds in the room.

"Tomorrow, we'll resupply and prepare ourselves for what lies ahead," Usofra said, putting her things on a small desk.

The tension in the room was palpable, knowing how close we were to Zaine—months of travel, pain, and heartache had led us to this moment, standing on the precipice of rescuing Zaine from Duke Dagrol's fortress—a fortress that undoubtedly held untold dangers within its walls.

"Darx," Usofra began, her voice tense with concern, "Have you thought about what we'll face once we get to the fortress? We can't just barge in blindly."

"Usofra's right," Namy chimed in, sitting on the edge of her bed, "We need a plan, or we won't stand a chance."

"Are we going to go investigate around the city like last time?" Sunshine asked as soon as I freed her from the medallion, "If so, I want to go to the brothel with Darx like last time. It was pretty entertaining!"

"There's no reason to go to a brothel at all, fool." Namy responded, "Besides, this city is huge. It will be difficult to find reliable information."

I nodded, "Gathering information could take too long. We don't have that much time if we want to save Zaine."

"Then let's head straight for his fortress and confront whatever dangers that lie ahead," Usofra said with determination in her eyes, "We've come this far; we can't back down now."

"Agreed," Namy added, her gaze full of resolve, "We'll face whatever challenges come our way!"

"Alright," I said, steeling myself for the mission that lay before us, "We'll leave tomorrow night. Let's rest up and prepare ourselves for what's to come."

I know it won't be easy, but I have an ace up my sleeve. With my new ability to control monsters, I can use them to launch an **** on the fortress. It's the last thing they'd expect. Amid the chaos of a monstrous attack, we'll have the perfect chance to slip through the confusion and find our way inside. This might just be the edge we need to rescue Zaine.

As we prepared for bed, Namy claimed one of the beds for herself, leaving Usofra and me to share the other, "Today, I want to sleep alone! You sleep with Darx." Namy said with a mischievous smile.

Usofra turned to look at me with a red face and hesitated before asking, "Is it okay if I sleep here with you, Darx?"

"Sure, it's no problem," I replied, trying to sound nonchalant.

"Thank you," She whispered softly, sliding under the covers next to me.

I could feel the warmth of her body radiating against mine as we lay side by side. My mind raced with questions about Usofra's strange behavior towards me lately. Could it be possible that she had developed feelings for me? So far, we only had sex to keep my demonic energy under control, and never once did I imagine the possibility of Usofra or Namy falling in love with me. Besides that, lately, Usofra doesn't want to go out with Namy to satisfy her needs as a succubus and prefers to stay with me to have sex, saying that it is beneficial for both of us. In fact, now that I think about it, I haven't even had sex with Namy lately since Usofra is the one in charge of absorbing the excess demonic energy that I accumulated over time.

The room was filled with a tense silence, punctuated only by the sound of our steady breathing.

I turned to look at Usofra momentarily, her face illuminated by the faint moonlight streaming through the window. She seemed lost in thought, her eyes distant and clouded with emotions I couldn't quite decipher. As I studied her features, I began to wonder what it would mean if she truly did have feelings for me.

"Darx?" Usofra's voice broke through my thoughts, making me realize how close our faces were.

"Y-yes?" I stammered while I felt how she hugged me.

"N-No, it's nothing. Forget it," She said quietly, her voice barely audible, "Have a good night!"

"Alright," I agreed, swallowing hard and feeling a mixture of anxiety and curiosity churn within me.

Usofra smiled, her eyes finally closing as she drifted off to sleep. Meanwhile, I could hear Namy's mischievous curls on the other side of the room. I lay awake for a while longer, my mind reeling with questions and doubts about our uncertain future. But there was one thing I knew for sure – we had to rescue Zaine, no matter what it took. With that thought firmly rooted in my mind, I eventually succumbed to the call of sleep.

As my consciousness drifted away, I found myself enveloped in the familiar world of darkness. The inky black void stretched out before me, and there she was – Zaine, sitting silently as if waiting for me. Her form remained obscured by shadows, but her presence was undeniable.

"Zaine," I called out tentatively, my voice echoing in the emptiness, "We're getting closer to you. We've made it to Avernus, and we're planning our next move."

Zaine didn't respond, her silence weighing heavily upon my heart. I could feel the unease building within me, the need to hear her voice.

"Zaine," I said, almost whispering.

Still, she remained silent and motionless. Seeing that Zaine wouldn't respond, I sank down in front of her. Despite the overwhelming silence, being near her brought a sense of calm. I looked up at her, my thoughts swirling with the complicated feelings I held for her. Even without knowing her true appearance or her past, there was something about her that captivated me. My heart ached to see her in person, to finally be able to hold her hand.

"Zaine," I whispered, my voice barely audible even to myself, "I promise you, I will rescue you."

The world of darkness seemed to swallow my words, offering no comfort or solace. Yet, as I sat there before Zaine, staring into the abyss, I clung to the hope that our reunion was near. With a heavy heart, I closed my eyes and allowed myself to drift back into the realm of sleep, knowing that soon, our journey would reach its climax.

The morning sun filtered through the window of our room, casting a warm glow on the wooden floorboards. Sunshine flitted about, her delicate wings fluttering with excitement.

"Dox. Namy and Usofra went out to gather supplies for our journey," Sunshine informed me, landing on my shoulder, "We should be ready to leave soon."

"Good," I replied.

For the first time since I'd met her, Sunshine looked nervous. She was quiet, which in itself is strange, but more than that, her expression showed nervousness.

Sunshine hesitated before speaking, "Dox... promise me something?"

"Uh? Of course. What is it?" I asked, furrowing my brow.

"Promise me that you won't die. And after we rescue that Zaine, take me to the legendary Fairy forest." Her eyes seemed to plead with me, her fear evident.

I couldn't help but smile slightly, "I promise. I don't plan to die, and I have already promised you that I will help you, so I will keep my word. We'll make it through this together, and then we'll embark on your quest."

Her face lit up, and she hugged my cheek, "Thank you, Dox."

As the day wore on, Namy and Usofra returned with an assortment of supplies – food, weapons, and other necessities for our journey. With each passing hour, the reality of what lay before us became more palpable. As night fell again, we stood together in the dimly lit room, our resolve unwavering. We were ready to face whatever dangers awaited us on our path to rescue Zaine.

"Alright, everyone," I said, my voice firm, "We've come a long way to get to this point. We'll succeed no matter what awaits us at Duke Dagrol's fortress. We're going to rescue Zaine."

Namy, Usofra, and Sunshine nodded solemnly in agreement.

"Let's make a pact that no matter the odds, we will come out alive and save Zaine," Namy continued, extending her hand into the center of our small circle. Usofra, Sunshine, and I placed our hands on top of hers.

"Let's do this!"

With our pact made, we grabbed our belongings and left the room. The cover of darkness was once again our ally as we took to the skies, leaving Avernus behind. The city's lights grew smaller and fainter as we flew northward, heading toward Duke Dagrol's fortress.

Meanwhile, back in the Human territory, in the grand castle, Queen Zara and Aelbrecht the Taciturn convened in a private chamber. Their meeting was veiled in secrecy and urgency, reflecting the gravity of the situation at hand. Stella's latest report, delivered through her ravens, reached Queen Zara's hands. The raven spies had been monitoring Darx's progress closely.

"According to Stella's report, Darx has recently fought a critical battle against Duke Vanth, the feared master of monsters," Queen Zara said, her voice calm and measured, "That kid actually managed to defeat one of the strongest demons under the command of the Demon King? That's... impressive."

"Indeed," Aelbrecht agreed, his skull expression stoic, "This victory demonstrates that Darx has become more powerful than we initially thought. If Darx can successfully rescue Zaine, it could change the tide of this war in our favor."

"True." Queen Zara sighed, her eyes betraying her concern, "But let us not forget the risks involved. Darx is venturing deeper into enemy territory, and we cannot predict what other challenges may lie ahead. The only thing we can do from here is watch his every step. According to Stella's report, Darx is now heading east."

Aelbrecht nodded solemnly, "We shall continue to monitor the situation closely and act accordingly."

Queen Zara stared at the parchment in her hands, her brow furrowed as she read the details of Darx's recent accomplishments, "It's astonishing how quickly Darx is growing in power," She remarked, a note of disbelief in her voice, "I hadn't anticipated such rapid progress," Queen Zara looked up at Aelbrecht, "You made the right decision to let Darx escape into the demon territory; he's our best chance for victory."

Aelbrecht, stoic and calculating as always, nodded in agreement. He crossed his arms over his chest, deep in thought, "Darx's victory over Duke Vanth is more than just a triumph over a single foe. If he succeeds in rescuing Zaine, it will completely shift the trajectory of the war. The encounter between Darx and Zaine was predestined since long ago."

"Indeed," Queen Zara reaffirmed, tapping a finger against her chin.

"Zaine is the only one who can awaken Darx's true potential. Without her guidance, he may never reach the level needed to confront the true enemy." Aelbrecht continued.

Queen Zara's eyes widened, a mix of concern, "It all hinges on Zaine... and whether or not Darx can rescue her in time," She paused for a moment, "If Darx fails in this mission, it will not just be humanity that is doomed, but every race—even demons—will be facing extinction. The fate of our world rests upon his shoulders, and he doesn't know it."

"Your words ring true, Your Majesty," Aelbrecht replied gravely, "The stakes are higher than ever before."

As Queen Zara looked out the window at the setting sun, she couldn't help but feel a mixture of fear and anticipation.

"Perhaps," Aelbrecht spoke, stroking his bone chin, "It might be time to tell the leaders of the other races about the Demon King Ziges and his true threat—the one that could potentially end the world. We cannot continue to bear this burden alone."

Queen Zara hesitated, her eyes clouded with worry. She knew that revealing this information would shake the foundations of the world and possibly create chaos among the nations, "You are right, Aelbrecht. We must inform them. But let's wait until we see what happens between Zaine and Darx. If we will tell them that there is hope or if we only have one last **** battle to survive."

"Very well, Your Majesty," Aelbrecht nodded.

"I hope the goddess [Imris] understands why we are doing this and guides Darx on his path." Queen Zara whispered.

To the south of the continent, at the edge of Dark Elf territory, Zhoron ascended one of the highest and most perilous mountains, following a path deeply familiar to him—it was, after all, where he had grown up. Three long years had passed since his last visit to this place, and now he returned with a singular purpose: to recruit the dragons in the war against the Demons. As he neared the dragon nests, high above the clouds, he walked the worn trail that led to what was once his home. Above him, colossal dragons of various colors and sizes soared through the sky, their shadows casting a daunting presence over the mountainside.

Zhoron stopped momentarily, taking in the familiar majestic view as the wind howled around him. The skies above were painted with dragons gliding effortlessly, their wings stretching wide as they cut through the air. But this wasn't a simple homecoming. He wasn't here for memories; he was here to bring the dragons to the fight. Zhoron knew it wouldn't be easy, especially with his father being as stubborn as ever.

As Zhoron approached the heart of the mountain, a heavy thud echoed from behind. Slowly turning, his eyes widened at the sight before him.

A dragon, larger than any he had seen in years, descended onto the rocky ground with grace despite its size. Its scales were the color of night, darker than the shadows. But it wasn't the dragon's size that caught Zhoron off guard—it was...

"Brother!" The dragon's voice rumbled deep and powerful, sending vibrations through the earth.

Zhoron's throat tightened as he uttered the name he hadn't spoken in so long, "Dravon."

With a low growl that almost resembled a chuckle, the enormous black dragon shimmered, and in a blink, where once stood a beast, now stood a naked man. The transformation was seamless, his human form tall, muscular, with the same dark presence of the dragon. His eyes, though, remained the same—gleaming with a predatory intensity that never left them. Few dragons have the ability to transform their body, but Zhoron's brother can. Zhoron, for his part, is not a dragon, even though a dragon calls him brother. Zhoron was found by a dragon when he was abandoned as a baby in these same mountains. Since then, Zhoron was adopted and raised among dragons.

"It's been a long time, Zhoron," Dravon said with a smirk, his voice carrying the same deep, resonant tone it had when he was in his dragon form.

Zhoron took a step forward, still processing the unexpected reunion, "Where's Father?" He asked.

Dravon's smirk faded, his eyes darkening with something far more serious, "He's... not in the best condition, brother."

Zhoron's brows knitted in confusion, "Not in the best condition? What do you mean? What happened to him?"

Dravon sighed, his expression growing somber as he walked closer, stopping just a few feet from Zhoron, "Weeks ago, a demon came... one of many that have come to convince us to join the Demon King's army."

Zhoron clenched his fists, his jaw tightening, "And Father dealt with him like he did the others, didn't he?"

Dravon shook his head slowly, "No. This one was different," His eyes held a gravity that sent a cold shiver down Zhoron's spine, "This demon had a strange ability. Father fought him, killed him—but not before he was... affected."

"Affected how?" Zhoron demanded, his mind racing.

Dravon hesitated as if weighing how much to say, "I don't know the full extent, but it was something more than physical. His strength is fading. His mind... not as clear as it once was."

Zhoron's breath caught in his throat. His father—one of the most powerful dragons, a creature feared by even the bravest warriors, and the only one who could make the other dragons join his cause was...
