Getting the Boys together...

Playtime in the Yard

4th Forumidae, the 28th day of the month of Semens (Sem), the 3672nd year of Salvation's Landing

Reglin, Lim, and Boll finished up their duties for the day and changed over to their personal wear. Boll seemed to have warmed up to Reglin as he has actually shared a couple of stories of his family over the day. They decided to wait in the Watch room for the rest of the shift crew. Once all were present and changed, the crew all went to the servant’s dining hall as one, a veritable cacophony following them with the jests and insults flying.

All was well and the guys’ spirit was high. With it being highly unusual for the whole crew to get together like this, it drew questions, including from Asha and Lina. They weren’t hiding anything so the guards would say that they were going to head out to the yard to beat each other senseless. What they weren’t expecting is how many people found that interesting and didn’t have much else to do this evening. Before they knew it, there was a good dozen or so from the servants’ hall that said they would come to watch, including Asha and Lina.

After meals were eaten, Reglin managed to get away from the guys for a few moments to talk to Asha alone, asking her if it was wise for her to come out to the yard. He was concerned about her state. She looked tired as Tabitha had told her she would. But she assured him that she would just stay for a bit and then head out to get a good night’s rest. She did give him a gentle kiss for his concern. They split up again as Reglin had to get back to the troops.

Much like the evening previously, the men all took their time meandering toward the yard, letting their meals settle. In the meantime, they partook in the tradition of telling war stories or whore stories. To Reglin it seemed like those were the two choices that soldiers were given when amongst each other.

Once at the yard, they noticed that some of the folks had already arrived and were socializing among themselves. This was one of the perks of being on palace staff. As long as there was nothing important pending, they were allowed to hang out in the periphery of the estates as long as they behaved.

The Day watch crew had started with the gearing up of the padded armor and dulled weapons, stories still being exchanged while doing so, when Reglin noticed someone approaching the guards. He yelled out in greetings, but more to give the guys a bit of warning, “Evening Sergeant! Glad you could make it out this fine evening.”

The chatter didn’t lessen really, just changed to perhaps a more amenable type of language. Sergeant Grahm gave a wave as he approached, his bald pate and walrus-like mustaches somewhat at odds with the humorous gleam in his eyes. “Evenin’ lads… Don’t mind me too much. Just wanna to see if Goldy here is what the other guys say he is. More though, I just wanted to let you guys know I’m here if ya need anything. But this is your guys’ time. Go have some fun but learn something’.”

The crew as a whole gave him thanks for his consideration and the grizzled Master Sergeant went off to the grandstands to find a seat. As Reglin watched his sergeant head up into the stands, he noticed some new faces seating in the area. It was not surprising to see Wilmyna and Freighla finding a place to sit, but what was surprising was that she was accompanied by Lady Falina of the Western Duchy and Lady Vidala of the Southern Duchy. Both ladies were accompanied by the maids Deela and Camilla respectively. Quite the audience, Reglin thought to himself, but chose to not draw attention to nobleladies and see how his cadre performed, but more than likely someone would notice shortly.

Rather than one on one matches, the whole group of ten guards of the watch picked weapons of choice and headed into the yard proper. Lim, Boll, Halpern, and Nimit were known quantities in some fashion at least. But Reglin would get an opportunity to see some of his other compatriots’ skills on display.

Spending a minute or so doing some light engagements just warming up, Reglin got a chance to clash arms with the rather large men who were the palace entrance guards, Gamil and Magnurs, picked for their detail due to their impressive size. Both men accustomed to using their range Reglin could tell after but a few quick interactions.

From the west, Gamil was dark-haired cut in a similar fashion as Reglin’s own. Closely cropped on top and shaved regularly on the back and sides. Right now, the back and sides sported stubble. He wore a beard that was short and well kempt. A bit more personable than Boll, but he was cut from a similar cloth, being quite socially reserved, preferring to observe than take part from the looks of it.

Magnurs gave Lim a run for his money in the arena of power as well. The man could strike an imposing visage for certain. A Nordling with Fire orange hair that was pulled back into an ornate braid and a long-braided beard to match. As this was outside of normal regulation appearance, it seemed that there was some cultural outreach accepted. His brow was heavy, making it seem like he could only glare out from under it with intense green eyes. But the man was quick to smile and disarming when he did.

He traded blows of blunted weapons with the guards responsible for the southern main gate of the estate, Canith and Yohan. The two were more of an average build than the two behemoths that stood the door of the palace.

Canith was a man in his mid-to-late thirties, sun-tanned, with salt-and-peppered hair. His lips seemed to always wear a sly smile, like he was hearing jokes that no one else was hearing. A bit unsettling sometimes, but Reglin imagined that the man’s clean-shaven look with a chiseled chin might make him pretty popular with the ladies. He came from a farmstead a bit to the north of the capital, saying that his family came over to this continent pretty early on, several hundred years ago. Prowess-wise, Canith was on the lower end of the guards. That is to say that he was still pretty damned good, just not elite.

Talented, but not overly also described his partner, Yohan. The young Nordling always had an ear open to listen to his more experience partner for advice. Calling him young however, meant that he was of an age with Reglin. Perhaps even a year or two older. Impressionable, but able seemed an apt description of the brown/blond haired man from the north from the small dealings Reglin had with the man. Though not as physically intimidating as Magnurs, Yohan did have deceptive strength that had caused a quick regripping of Reglin’s sword when struck.

With the relief tandem of Sebestin and Orick having the day off, Reglin would get to give them a spar at another time. But now that everyone was warmed up physically and mentally, Lim came out with a bundle of sticks in his hand, “Gather up you sorry shits! Shortest versus longest. Easy enough for even you simpletons ta understand!” calls of ‘pot, meet kettle’ and the like came in reply, but everyone took a stick.

In the end, the shortest stick was taken by Boll and the longest was taken by Yohan. As everyone cleared the area for the two combatants, Reglin thought this one should more than likely go to the wily vet, Boll. Yet, strange things tend to happen in a fight. Without his involvement, the artifact owner looked over to the grandstands and saw Asha and Lina. Both gave circumspect waves to him, which he responded to with his own. In doing so though, Reglin noticed some of the ladies make glances toward the laundresses. From the distance there was no way he could tell what was behind those looks, But the young guard just got a gnawing in his gut. Like a secret was just given away in such a brazen fashion. Perhaps it was just his sense of protectiveness for his Apple, but he did not want her to become a target of noble cruelty. Luckily, Princess Katya was not in the stands.

But there were a few more surprises he had not noticed arriving. Firstly, was Tabitha. She had decided to venture out of the libraries to watch men get sweaty as the bludgeoned one another. A bit of a surprise. However, a bigger surprise was seeing Yelena in the stands with her perpetually disinterested handmaid, Oliyah and two of the Evening watch guards, Vorn and Thedin if he recalled correctly. More shocking still, the pale dirty-blonde princess was sitting next to Wilmyna. With Oliyah sitting in front of Yelena knitting, Reglin tried to make out who was sitting on the opposite side of Wilmyna. After a few moments of squinting, he finally realized that is was in fact the youngest princess, Cirsha! A whole load of surprises in those stands from the looks.

Telling himself that he would try to make his way over to those stands if the opportunity arose, Reglin returned his attention to the yard. It was as he thought. Boll was putting Yohan through the numbers, but the young Nordling was a game opponent, not making it easy for the grizzled Boll. The old guardsman deflected a blow from Yohan’s handax, stomped on the instep of the northman’s foot and rammed an elbow into his solar plexus, knocking the wind out of the Yohan. Boll then sidestepped, then swept the blond guard’s leg out with a shove of his shield.

And that was that. Turning to look into the crowd, Reglin saw a look of mock disappointment from Wilmyna and Freighla as both still smiled and were animated in their talking with the nobility around them. Even the two princesses looked engaged. Then he saw Tabitha walking over to where Asha and Lina were sitting. He wished he could be in two places at once. He would’ve loved to know what that conversation would be like. But back to the drilling.

Gathered around once more, sticks were pulled while a mix of cajoling and insults were thrown about. Reglin had drawn the longest straw, he knew already, and he looked around to see who he would face. Nimit looked disappointed at not getting the shortest. It seemed he was wanting a rematch. But the shortest stick was held by Canith.

As the yard was cleared, both he and Canith noticed some murmuring noises from the stands with a few calls out to them. The older chiseled guard looked at Reglin with that sly smile, “Seems you have yourself a cheering section up there…”

Giving a small shrug and a smile, Reglin replied, “How can you tell that you don’t have some admirers of your own in there?”

With a snort of a laugh, Canith shook his head while leaning on his sword, shield on one arm, “Nay friend. I’ve no doubt that some may have had thoughts in the past…” He narrowed his eyes, looking at Reglin, “Ah yes. I forget how new you are here Goldy. I’ll let you in on a little secret. I guess not really a secret…” the black-and-silver haired guard shrugged. “I’m not overly interested in women… like, at all…”

Nodding slowly at that, Reglin smiled, “Ok then. I suppose that means more for me…”

Canith’s brow raised a brow at that, “Goldy… You trying to win my affections?” That sly grin of his widened as he saw Reglin’s eyes bug out at that. Reglin just realized that his words could be taken either way and color from embarrassment stained his cheeks. The older guardsman clicked his tongue, “Awww… you’re cute when you blush.” And with no warning made a lunging stab at Reglin.

Just like that, embarrassment went away. Reglin had liked his swordcatching dagger and arming sword set up and decided to go with it again. His reflexed were superb thanks to the Affection Artifact and Reglin deflected the blow easily enough with the swordcatcher but was unable to grab a hold of the blade. So the circling began…

“I had to do it, Reg… I’ve heard about you and I know where my strengths are… And one on one fighting isn’t it.” Canith smiled again at him, then feinted a strike.

Reading the man’s shoulders, Reglin barely gave any reaction to the feint. Instead, he lunged forward while Canith was resetting his sword arm, slamming his heavier arming sword into the retreating blade with **** enough to set the man’s balance going backwards. In mere moments and a flurry of strikes from both hands, Reglin had Canith doubled over from a blow to the gut and his sword laying in the dirt. He checked on the veteran, who nodded in response, unable to voice anything at the moment. He did straighten himself up and slowly started to walk it off.

“Shit Goldy… You ever gonna give anyone a shot out here?” Lim said as he and the others gathered around again for the next match. “You and Canith are out for this one. Everyone’s gotta get a round in after all” So that meant the there would only be five sticks for Lim, Halpern, Nimit, Gamil, and Magnurs.

That meant there would be at least two more matches before he would get another shot in the yard. He took the opportunity to go over to Yohan and talk him up a bit, telling him all the things he did great before peppering in just a bit of advice for the Nordling guard. Reglin was surprised when Boll yelled at him in humor for not having anything for the crafty old soldier. Shrugging and laughing, Reglin did as he was told and offered the tiniest bits of advice for Boll. Truthfully, the man was dangerous. Extremely so. If there were any glaring flaws in his prowess, it only came from a physical nature. But there was little you could do about that as you aged.

After checking in on Canith again, who assured him that he was okay, Reglin looked over and saw that the next match was Nimit and Gamil. Should be interesting to watch, he thought as he started to stride his way over the stands.

Doing what was proper, Reglin walked toward the two princesses and bowed respectfully, “Your Highnesses… You honor us by witnessing our practice. I am pleasantly surprised.” He gave a nod to the two guards in recognition, who in turn did the same, looking at Reglin with appraisal.

Princess Yelena gave a slow and subtle nod to her old. A smug smile formed on her pale lips though, “I assure you Master Reglin, it was only out of complete boredom that I would come out here.” She acted as if they were the only ones around before realizing something, “Oh, and of course I was asked to attend by gracious invitation as well.” Her eyes glanced over to Wilmyna at that, which in turn caused Reglin to look in the Nord noblelady’s direction. Yelena continued on somewhat surprisingly, “Now Cirsha is here because I wanted her to maybe look on and appreciate something that wasn’t equine in nature. I am not certain why I thought bringing her to watch brutes bash each other about was an alternative, but her we are alas…” She smiled at her sister then.

The youngest Polivander princess took more after her oldest sister and her mother than Yelena. Dark of hair and complexion, but she had big brown eyes in contrast to Katya’s and their mother’s green eyes. And right now, those brown eyes were wide and glinting with excitement, “Who would have thought?” She said with a palpable energy. “Not being well-versed in the ways of combat I can only say that your match appeared to be masterful, Master Reglin.” She smiled widely at him. Though only a couple of years younger than he and Yelena, Cirsha seemed to have a doe-eyed innocence to her that Reglin found incredibly endearing.

As the guardsman was giving a bowing nod of appreciation of the princess’ compliment, Wilmyna spoke up, “I can assure you, your Highness, it was indeed masterful. Freighla would attest as much as she did to me when it happened.” Freighla nodded in agreement of the appraisal and both blondes smiled at him while the Princess Cirsha gave a slow nod in understanding.

“Thank you, Princess. Thank you, ladies. I am humbled by your praise.” Reglin said with a reserved smile. “I hope that you will enjoy the rest of the matches. If you are not in too much of a hurry, my lady, maybe we can discuss some of your ideas after seeing us in action.” He said that to Wilmyna but addressed all present. “Not to be inappropriate, but if any of you ladies might have questions or concerns regarding us guard, I am sure we could address them afterwards.”

He thought for a moment of how to do what he wanted. He wanted to plant seeds. If he was to be bold, let it be known he supposed. “My lady, if I may be so bold, I must say that you show your heart bravely. I am sure that any warrior worth the weapon in hand would gladly take it up to follow you. And not just any Nordling, any of us.” He gave another bow to Lady Wilmyna, almost as courteous as to the Princesses, causing the poor blonde lady to turn almost crimson from his words. Those around her were looking at her with perhaps a renewed eye, Reglin hoped. With a glance for Mistress Freighla, the guard saw her lips wide in a smile, beaming at him. She gave him a tilt of her neck in appreciation for what he just did. With most of the attention on the Northern lady, the young guardsman decided it was time to move onward.

Reglin stepped over a couple of steps and bowed once more to Lady Falina and Vidala, “Good evening Ladies…” Those two were slightly down the list in the way of stunning looks, but as the western and southern ladies looked at him with pleasant smiles, it was another smile than made Reglin catch his breath. Dear Gods, that Camilla was sex incarnate. And that smile she gave him seemed to say that she would make a grand attempt at ruining him for other women. He attempted to remain professional however and tried to keep that reserved smile of his. “If you’ll excuse me please, I need a word with my schooler over a way.” He gestured with his head over to the Magistricia, who was sitting with Asha now.

Once assured that he could leave properly from the nobles, Reglin turned and made his way over to the trio of women huddled together. Lina’s eyes were on the yard though, as the previous match was over and now it was a match of Lim and Magnurs, two serious heavyweights. Asha and Tabitha, however, were both watching him approach with equally entertained smiles on their lips.

“I feel like I should be juggling or some other stunt by to looks on your faces.” Reglin stated nervously to his two lovers, “Am I really that funny to look at?” giving them an apprehensive smile.

Asha laughed almost fully at him, while Tabitha just smiled and shook her head. It was Tabitha that spoke, “We were just talking about the meteoric change in your demeanor is all. Asha here is having to take my word on some of your past tendencies however.”

Nodding at that, Asha spoke a bit softly, “Nice work out there, Goldy…” her eyelids hooded those hazel eyes of hers, and she looked wearisome with a lazy smile on her lips.

“Love, you should get some rest…” He said under his breath to the chestnut beauty, “I do appreciate you coming out to watch, but take care of yourself, please. We need you after all…” He gave her a flirtatious grin.

Smiling warmly at his words, “I was just discussing what subject matters she would like tutelage in and when we should start our lessons. But I too had brought up her need of rest. I think we will stay for another of your bouts, then I will escort her to her beds.”

Lina had been paying attention to the yard, but that drew her attention. Reglin could only guess what was going on in there. She eyed everyone with a glance, “You were too busy flirting with the nobles over there to watch Lim wear down Magnurs, so I guess I should tell you that they are gathering up again. Unless Goldy is too important to associate with his fellow guardsmen.” Lina teased him with a smile. Reglin thought he heard some sting in her words regarding Lim though. He nodded and smiled to the elder laundress, “Thank you mistress…” He turned to Tabby and Asha, “I suppose we will talk another time. Good evening to you both.”

The girls said their farewells and Reglin headed over to the huddle of guards with them all turning to look at him with wide smiles. Lim, of course would be the mouthpiece of the cohort, naturally, “Deigned us worthy of your presence Goldy?” The men all gave chuckles, “Not that any of us fault you, of course. But let’s get on with it, eh? Hal’s automatically in. But we’re gonna do something a lil diff’rent… Longest straw teams with Halpern, shortest straw fights the two of them. Good?” Shakes of the heads and mutterings said that many were not please at that scenario, but all agreed in the end, stating that battle wasn’t always a one on one engagement.

Of course, it turned out that Reglin drew the shortest stick. The laughing and the look in Lim’s eyes told the young guard that not all may be on the up and up, however. Choosing not to voice his concerns about fairness, he just gave the broad guard a knowing smile and went to get his weapons while the third combatant was picked.

Picking up a short sword in his offhand, Reglin thought about tactics here. Hal preferred a polearm. But would he go with one when he had an ally? If he did, the swordcatcher would be lacking in range and heft. He flipped the short sword around in his hand as if he had been wielding one for years, the weight of it just felt right, as had every weapon he had picked up since gaining ‘Martial Prowess’ from the artifact. He decided he would give it a try and turned to see who he faced.

Great… Boll… The older man smiled at Reglin menacingly, but there was some humor in his eyes. Never a loquacious man, Boll only said, “Sorry lad...” as he strapped his shield on. Hal laughed at the gnarled old guard’s words and pull up his polearm.

‘Might as well get this over with’ Reglin thought to himself as he raised his arming sword up in salute. Both Hal and Boll did the same in response. And so it began, with Boll taking point, coming straight towards Reglin, albeit cautiously. Hal started to circle around to Reglin’s left, looking to exploit his shorter offhand weapon with the bill he was wielding.

Rotating counter to Hal, Reglin looked to use Boll as a screen against the longest weapon in the melee. He would make Hal move when he could, but he had his opponent in front of him demanded almost all his attention. After sending out a few attacks with the arming sword, Reglin learned that Boll did not absorb the blows, he attacked them with his shield. The result would often leave the attacker off balance, but also opened Boll up ever so slightly for countering. Whereas someone who absorbed was able to maintain defensive integrity. Positives and negatives for both.

Getting caught up in the one on one with Boll, Reglin lost track of Halpern for a moment and was almost skewered because of it. Superior reactions and speed were the only things to save him. With Reglin having to perform some very exaggerated movements to avoid the attack, it left him open for Boll to press him.

Slashing low to Reglin’s knees while he had pirouetted away from the polearm, the young guardsman was lucky to get his short sword down in a sweeping parry. As he had swept the blade of Boll’s with its current momentum, he got the veteran’s shoulders turned and had him lunging forward to catch himself.

With a small window of opportunity, given Boll’s proficiency, Reglin planted on his left foot and spun back the way he had just come. His arming sword was already sweeping upward in expectation of Hal’s bill coming at him and was rewarded with the ‘thunk’ sound of metal hitting the wooden shaft, sending it upwards. Changing angles, Reglin immediately went straight at the surprised guard who was trying to bring his polearm down to intercept. Nevertheless, that momentary lapse was all that was needed as the dual-wielding guard pushed the weapon away again as he was already inside of its range. Hal let go of the bill, as it was useless and tried to slow Reglin with any grapple, perhaps thinking he would be the sacrifice needed for Boll to win the match. However, the holder of the scroll was too nimble for the unarmed guard to get a hold of, and with a succession of blows from both hands, Hal was on the ground ‘playing dead’.

Given the amount of ground that flurry had covered and the fact that his last strike turned him in the direction in which he thought Boll would be coming from, Reglin squared up to the experienced brawler nearly the instant after his last attack landed on Hal. For his part, Boll looked implacable still. Acrobatic fighting did not impress him in any fashion. He just pressed forward resolutely.

Knowing the dirty fighting tactics that the older guard like to employ, Reglin opted to keep a distance until the time was right. Taking advantage of far superior speed and endurance, the younger guard kept changing the direction in which he circled and made his strikes asynchronous, not getting caught into a rhythm of the fight.

Much like how Nimit wore Boll down last night, Reglin did the same. The attacks came less often and bashing attempts from the shield all but ceased. In the end, Reglin would have dismembered the trooper at the elbow and the knee with live blades and Boll conceded.

Some whistles came from the crew in appreciation of his performance. Reglin helped Boll up and clapped him on the back before wiping his brow of sweat. Turning to look at his cadre, their faces were a wide range of expressions. Some were smiling widely, while others looked deeper in thought, clapping almost involuntarily. Lim just shrugged with a grin as he approached, “Oh well. I tried to get ya, but you’re too damned good for this lousy lot. Now if I had drawn that longest stick…”

Reglin could only laugh at his blustering friend before giving him a clap on the shoulder, “I’m sure Lim… I count myself fortunate indeed.”

Lim chuckled, “You take the rest of the practice off. No one wants to fight you solo anyways right now. Even Nimit. Would like to get everyone two matches though. Reglin nodded and stripped down to his shirtsleeves as the fights resumed. He stood next to the guys, offering up what he saw in the current fighters’ stances, tactics, and skills. And those fights were over, he would go over and talk to them. He was trying not to come across as a know-it-all and tried to use anecdotal examples to make the lessons relatable. Even if those anecdotes weren’t his own, they helped.

By the end, it was a productive evening and the sun was just about down when it was adjourned. He congratulated some friends and lifted the spirits of others as they said their farewells. Most were in a well enough mood though.

Left alone, Reglin gathered up his belongings and looked to the stands. Surprisingly, a good amount of people remained and seemed to be socializing amongst themselves. And so he strode in that direction…
