Chapter 16

What’s next?
Peregrine gets to her place...
Peregrine was distraught as she walked into her apartment building. She had gone back to the safehouse to try and convince Simon to not risk his life like he had done tonight. And she had failed in that, and possibly offended Simon. He probably thought that she thought he was not fit to be in that situation. And it wasn't that at all.
She got up to her floor, the third and opened the door. Jenny was still up, judging by the sounds in the kitchen. "Jen? You okay?" Peregrine asked as she closed the door behind her.
"Yeah, I'm okay. Just couldn't sleep. So I'm making a remedy I remember my mom making, you know...before." Jenny said, grinding to a halt.
"What is it?" Peregrine asked, trying to put up a strong front. Anything that reminded Jenny of her mother hurt her. In a way Peregrine envied Jenny's memory of her mother, since Peregrine had no memories of her own mother. But then Peregrine did know her father, unlike Jenny who had a random Sperm Donor.
"Warm milk. It use to put me right to sleep. Of course my mother rocking me may have had something to do with it. But...can't hurt to try it...Hey..." Jenny said as she took a better look at Peregrine, "You were crying...why?"
"I...I was trying to convince Simon to not risk his life like he did tonight." Peregrine answered, the memory of all the Humanis types converging on her disabled truck sliding through her memory. Suddenly the memory of her father's last moments hit her as well, and how the situations were so similar.
And it was too much for her as Peregrine leaned heavily on the door jam, and then slid down to the floor.
"Peregrine!" Jenny said, quickly turning the stove off and moving to the half elf.
