Chapter 17

What next?
Blue Hill
Chaple was already there when the Cadillac came rolling up to the abandoned observatory, and Tyr found this to be slightly odd.
The two-story building looked as if it hadn’t been lived in for years, and the stone tower attached to it, complete with battlements on top, made the whole thing look quite peculiar.
This time around, Chaple was looking quite pale, and his two bodyguards were sporting pretty tense expression. Tyr doubted that they were in grief about Dunkelzahn’s ****, and walked up to them while Peregrine remained in the car and Jake stood next to it, being ready to take cover behind it if the need would arise. Peregrine had been uncharacteristically gloomy this morning, but Tyr thought that this was due to the President’s ****.
“Tyr,” Chaple’s voice was weak as he greeted Tyr with a snappish nod.
Tyr was just about to respond when something happened. Despite being far from anywhere, the old station had been subjected to quite a lot of vandalism, ranging from graffiti on its walls to most of the windows being trashed. Now a figure suddenly came flying out of one of the few remaining windows to land with a sickening thud on the broken ground beneath the tower, a rifle smacking into the ground next to him.
Suddenly, Peregrine was revving the Cadillac’s engine while every one else had drawn their weapons, the situation suddenly coming close to exploding as Tyr held his Colt Manhunter aimed squarely at Chaple’s head.
Then Mr. Clean appeared in the recently shattered window, holding his Ares HVAR aimed at the Ford Phoenix and looking quite happy with his day so far. It had been a good idea, Tyr decided, to heed Mr. Cleans suggestion and position him inside the observatory a couple of hours earlier.
Shaking his head at Mr. Clean, Tyr holstered his gun again and pulled up the disc containing the lostech that the team had stolen the night before.
“What’s the matter, you don’t trust me no more?” He asked Chaple, who had now lowered his gun and signalled his bodyguards to do the same.
“Sorry Tyr, but things have started happening…” Chaple offered up an excuse.
“They concern us?” Tyr had pulled back his arm.
“Sort of, Brackhaven added the lostech liberated from him and the burning of Paratech’s offices by a violent mob of orks together and decided that somebody’s declared war on him. Kind of paranoid of him, but what can you do?” Chaple explained.
“So he’s got his whole security service out to find out what happened, or what?”
“Pretty much, so after you hand me that disc I’m going to drop off the grid for a while, and I suggest you do the same…”
“We just might, but first we want to get paid.”
Taking Tyr’s hint, Chaple handed him a small case and waited as Tyr opened it to check the five certified credsticks placed inside it.
“These check out,” Tyr decided, and handed Chaple the disc.
“Did you expect anything else?” Chaple replied with a thin smile.
“By the way, in case you decide to get out of Boston for a while,” Chaple then added, almost as an afterthought, “I happen to know a certain Mr. Johnson down in DC who might be interested in a team of good runners.”
