Chapter 18 by gunde gunde

What's next?

Off to the District

Two days later, Tyr was seated in the front passenger seat of the Cadillac, looking at the old Georgetown apartment house on the other side of the street.

“You’re sure that this is it?” Dove asked from her seat in the back. She was the only one in the team besides Tyr who knew just exactly who he was about to visit.

“Yeah,” Tyr threw one last glance down the street to see that they weren’t being watched, “I’ll be back shortly.”

As Tyr threw open the door and stepped out onto the tarmac, Peregrine did another check to make sure that the car was ready to go.

“Team two, this is Peregrine, Team One Leader is on the move,” Peregrine announced to the other members of the team, who were positioned about four-hundred yards away in an alleyway, being ready to come sweeping in if the situation demanded it.

The last two days had been spent getting from Boston to Washington DC, with the first day having been spent preparing for the trip.

Simon had repainted the team’s van, while Fire Fox had gotten hold of two pairs of Washington plate numbers which had replaced the old ones, while the Cadillac had been left unmodified, apart from the new plates, both pairs of which belonged to wrecked vehicles. Fire Fox had hacked the system to feed in the information about the two cars while Simon had manufactured them by modifying some of the older ones which could always be found lying about in their warehouse.

Tyr and Dove had spent the day trying to find out just how threatening the current situation was to them, although the city was still affected by the widespread riots, which were threatening to begin anew at any moment, with some even fearing that they could spread to Boston’s financial districts, which could very well result in economic upheaval which would effect the entire continent for quite some time.

What they did find out was that someone had been asking questions about active runners in the city, and roughing up quite a few Mr. Johnsons’ in the process.

The second day had been spent driving down the East Coast, with the team arriving in DC just before sundown. Having gotten into contact with some old friends, they had been able to set up shop in a temporary base which was suitably inconspicuous and not too expensive.

And now Tyr was walking across the Georgetown street a couple of hours before their scheduled meet with Mr. Johnson, with the others standing ready to act if something was to go wrong. It was probably a bit paranoid to expect that someone from Brackhaven had identified them as the ones who stole the lostech and followed them to DC, but it never hurt to be cautious.

Tyr looked over the list of names next to the door and then pressed down the correct key, after which he engaged in a brief, tense conversation with the person he had come to see, and then he was buzzed in.

Climbing up the stairs until he reached the right apartment, Tyr cleared his throat before banging his fist against the door.

A few seconds went by before the door was opened, and a figure appeared in the doorway. The man in the doorway was tall and had a muscular build which gave him an appearance similar to Tyr’s, as did his blonde hair and square-jawed handsomeness. He did however look to be a couple of years older than Tyr.

“Hi Jimmy,” the man greeted Tyr.

“Hey big brother,” Tyr replied, nodding at his brother before he was let into the apartment.
