Chapter 9

How did Vivia explain herself?
Peevishly
After the day she'd had, Vivia was in no mood for the attitude of this Earth Elemental in her head, so blunt and demanding. She was beat, battered and splattered with mud. Being called child on top of it all left her patience frayed a hair too thin.
“I beg your pardon, you oversized earthworm, but I'll have you know I am a woman—not a creature-child.”
Her tone carried more sardonicism than she'd initially intended, but she couldn't be bothered to care. The Elemental shook beneath her, sending short-lived ripples through the mudflat.
“Your voice resonates irksomely, though your creature-tongue is dissonant.” The words emerged in a soundless echo throughout her conscious, giving her a one-sided impression of incomprehensibility. It was like the surrounding currmurrin just... translated itself. “It bespeaks ill-will. I shall not stand for it.”
Vivia frowned, hesitating at the second tremor reverberating through the body of the elemental. “I'll admit I'm not enthused by mountains of muck manifesting under my feet—especially when they belittle me.”
As she spoke, the Elemental came further and further out of the ground, extending in a serpentine along the land. The momentum carried her forward and, she soon noticed, upward as well. “So much spite in such a small vessel...” Its message conveyed a sense of scale she couldn't wrap her head around.
When she began to panic and consider jumping off its back—or, whatever part of it she rode—she was daunted by the increasing speed, and rationalized her decision to remain astride it by its direction: toward home. It certainly seemed better than trudging through the mud.
“I'm not small, you're just too fucking big. Woah!” Vivia swayed unsteadily as it twisted, leaning forward to try and plant her hands on the clay-soft flesh.
“Arrogance. An easy thing to fix.” it rumbled. Suddenly the length of Elemental before her rose up into the air, slick mud trailing down the surface, soon slipping with her as her segment rose as well.
She cried out as she was sent sliding along the span of earth-flesh, subjected to hugging it with her arms and legs in order to slow herself and getting mud smeared up her front in the process. Before she knew it she was cradled in a high-risen curl of the snaking earth as it wrapped around her slowly.
“I can teach you a lesson, creature-child...” it creaked. The slimy, strong serpent of earth twined around her torso to trap her in its grasp some distance off the ground, pressing in around her waist and over chest and shoulder.
Vivia clutched at its body in vain, smothered in the muddy coil. She gasped, finding it difficult but not impossible to breathe. She didn't know how long that would last, though, so she figured she should do something quick. While she wasn't strong enough to wrest free, her voice could surely reach it.
What did Vivia say to the Earth Elemental?
