Part IV: Breaching Security – The Birth of the Undead

Synopsis:

The secret location the survivors of the Portland accident have been transported to along with their dead colleagues is underground the Rocky Mountains (to escape satellites monitoring). Research there is focused on a different topic than the Portland facility. Here, researchers are working on extending life and regenerating tissues, not in the good interest of people, but to give an advantage to the elite and to heal soldiers hurt in combat.

Experiments are already being made on animals and so far, life expectancy has been multiplied by 10, but it is wondered whether work done here might provide an antidote to the virus worked on in Portland. The virus is taken out of the dead bodies and research is resumed, while the corpses are cryogenized. To better understand the evolution of the illness, videos of the Portland incident are watched and rewatched, while experiments are done in vivo with small mammals (like rats and mice) in laboratories. Once dead, the regenerative DNA is introduced through a vector, another virus, but there seem to be no effects. It is then tried before the mammals die, while the virus is in incubation. Measures are recorded, regenerative DNA is modified, but mammals end up by dying anyway, although the period of incubation varies. Progress is finally made, though, and research is moved to higher species, like dogs, then monkeys. **** is delayed by the regenerative DNA, although sex drive is not extinct. It is inferred that a regular shot would keep them alive, although highly sexually driven. It’s half way to success in finding an antidote.

Experiments are moved to humans and former survivors from Portland are used as guinea pigs. It’s a half-success. As long as they keep injecting regenerative DNA, **** is postponed. When they stop, the latency ends and the virus takes over the person to ****. They keep a few living subjects for further research, while they bury the dead animals outside and keep human ones inside, in preparation for cryogenization.

While research continues, the dead rises. Nobody knows yet, but what happened is that in their seemingly dead state, the virus and the regenerative DNA combined to form a new mutated virus that keeps basic functions alive, forming zombies that are seeking only two things: eating and procreating. The new virus is more virulent, and the infected will typically die within a few hours and resuscitate as zombies.

Zombies take over the labs, fucking and eating a bunch of people. There is no virus contamination from the white rooms, so no emergency surety system quarantines the facility automatically as in Portland. However, some workers succeed to escape and to start the containment system, leaving others behind them, everybody caring only about himself. Manual containment is in multiple layers, and that’s how they succeed to get out, ordering containment only once they are safely out. As zombies breach out some of the security barriers, they escape again and do so till they are into the mountains, zombies safely inside in what seems security layers they won’t be able to defeat.

However, one of the survivors has been hurt, and he’s hiding it. He also managed to steal a few liters of antidote for himself. The effects of biting are slower than direct inhalation or bodily fluid exchanges, so he’s still capable of managing her sexual impulses, for a while.

Meanwhile, dead animals that were buried also rise back to life and disappear in the surrounding forest.
